Episode 1260: Beheaded and burned: the verdict which acknowledged Emer O'Loughlin was murdered

A verdict of unlawful killing was this week returned in a coroner's court, which heard that student Emer O'Loughlin was killed violently before her remains were burned in a fire.


Pam O'Loughlin, Emer's sister said the verdict is monumental to her loved ones, as it is the first time that the state have acknowledged that she was murdered.


The whereabouts of chief suspect John Griffin remain unknown.


But today Pam explains to Nicola why the inquest findings are so important and why she hopes it may ultimately lead gardaí to her killer.

Episode 1259: 88 pages of character references submitted for Firefighter Terence Crosbie as he is sent to Supermax jail

Dublin Firefighter Terence Crosbie has been sent to a Supermax prison in the US - despite 88 pages of character references being handed into a judge at his sentencing hearing.


Crosbie was jailed for at least 7 years after a jury found him guilty of rape a woman in a hotel in Boston on St Patrick’s Day weekend last year.


Niall speaks to Sunday Independent crime correspondent Ali Bracken about the emotional letters handed in on his behalf as the fireman plans to appeal the verdict.

The trial of Ruth Lawrence, accused of the double murders of drug debt collectors Anthony Keegan and Eoin O’Connor, has heard that her partner Neville van der Westhuizen is currently in jail in South Africa for a brutal kidnapping and murder which took place in 2017. The murder was of a young man following a row over a mobile phone charger. The court heard, three years after the bodies of O’Connor and Keegan were found on Inchicup Island with gunshot wounds.


Ruth Lawrence was extradited back from South Africa in recent years.

An American woman dubbed 'Queen of the Con' who swindled more than £100,000 from friends in Northern Ireland before fleeing to the US and posing as a fake heiress has been jailed after trial at Downpatrick Court.


Fifty-six-year-old Marianne Smyth stole the six-figure sum from clients after befriending them while working as a mortgage adviser between 2008 and 2010.


She then fled overseas to continue conning others, claiming to be on the run from the IRA. But one of her victims was LA producer Johnathan Walton, who has made it his life’s work to investigate her crime — writing a book and even travelling here to see her in the dock.
