Navigating Engineering, Nuclear Energy and Excelling with Employee Experience

In this podcast episode, we’re joined by Elinor Harrison, Integrated Risk Lead at EDF Energy. With a degree in Chemical Engineering with Honours in Sustainable Engineering, Elinor joined EDF on their highly regarded Graduate Scheme and has remained with the business since this point.

Throughout the episode we discuss the part nuclear energy plays in reducing the reliance on more traditional fuels, highlighting some of the core challenges and misconceptions of the industry. With media coverage and awareness of nuclear fuel for often negative reasons, the perception of nuclear fuel isn’t always the most positive, Elinor shares insights into this and highlights the benefits and positive impact of nuclear energy.

We delve into new developments within nuclear energy, the role SMR’s play in the energy mix and the challenges encountered with nuclear energy projects in relation to budgets and timescales.

Elinor is in her second decade at EDF Energy, while she loves her role and the opportunities she’s experienced in different areas and locations of the business, she shares with us what makes EDF such a great employer to work for; including competitive salary and benefits packages, career and personal development opportunities and more.

Engineering has always been, and despite progress still is a male dominated field, we talk through challenges faced throughout Elinor’s academic and professional journey, the lack of female representation within STEM fields and explore reasons for more inclusion within engineering.

With talent shortages and skills gaps significantly prevalent within engineering and an aging workforce, businesses are crying out for more talent in engineering. Elinor shares insights on how the talent retention piece plays a bit part in this to support successful talent attraction of engineering talent.

Elinor has led and mentored teams, she shares with us some of the best traits and skills to successfully motivate and inspire teams, plus the best career advice she has received, and still benefits from today.
