Concerning The Spiritual In Art
Healing Frequencies with Si Golraine

My conversation with Ukrainian artist Si Golraine is not to be missed. This heart-opening episode begins with her spiritual journey of healing from various physical ailments, which ultimately led her to a path of holistic learning. This journey transformed her life and introduced her to metaphysical and spiritual knowledge that she incorporates into her life and art practice in such an inspiring way. We also dive into the origins of her unique art-making process, where she channels electrical currents through her brushes to “paint” on sheets of titanium, creating a remarkable fusion of art and metallurgy.

Si Golraine (born Olga Panchenko) is a Ukrainian-born multidisciplinary artist based in New York City whose work bridges spirit, science, and art. Her practice centers on applying raw electrical voltage to titanium. Through this medium she explores energy, consciousness, and healing - transforming elemental forces into vibrational fields of color.

Raised in eastern Ukraine, Golraine studied classical piano for eleven years. After receiving a Future Leaders Exchange scholarship, she relocated to the U.S., eventually moving to New York to pursue interdisciplinary arts. Her path later became self-directed in response to the war in Ukraine and its impact on her family.

She is also half of Sestra Kuya, an experimental sonic-visual duo that in 2025 invented and engineered the transmission of fluctuating electrical voltage into both color and sound. In their system, electricity is applied to titanium sheets creating shifting fields of color while simultaneously being routed into modular synthesis to generate sound - merging scientific process with spiritual presence in a living fusion of art and energy.

Golraine is the recipient of a Staten Island Arts Premier Grant and the international Creative Climate Award, where her work received first prize by a panel that included Stanford University. Her practice has been shown with Visionary Projects (NYC), Red 225 (Nashville), and Human Impact Institute, among others, and has been featured in Staten Island Advance.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
The Intersection of Art and Magic with Hilma's Ghost (Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray)

In this episode, I connected with the dynamic duo of Hilma's Ghost, Sharmistha Ray and Dannielle Tegeder, to explore the fascinating intersection of art, spirituality, and community. We dive deep into their collaborative journey, tracing the origins of their partnership that blossomed amidst the challenges of the pandemic and the need for connection. Together we explore the transformative power of art and how spirituality plays a crucial role in their practice.

------------------

For over five years, the Hilma’s Ghost  has conducted experimental pedagogy, transcultural dialogue, and collectivity through the lens of feminism and spirituality to build community and reckon with patriarchal art histories that have excluded women, trans, and nonbinary practitioners. Hilma’s Ghost collaborated artistically on ABSTRACT FUTURES TAROT, consisting of 5 paintings, 78 drawings, and an original limited-edition tarot deck that was exhibited at The Armory Show 2021. The exhibition was shortlisted as one of the exhibitions to see by Will Heinrich at The New York Times. In January 2022, the duo curated Cosmic Geometries, a group exhibition of 25 artists at EFA Project Space, whichJillian Steinhauer of The New York Times called “a knockout exhibition.” CHROMAGICK, a series of new collaborative drawings using color magic and crystals was recently exhibited at Expo Chicago 2022. Hilma’s Ghost projects have been positively reviewed in The New York Times, Hyperallergic, and Artnet.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
A Light In The Dark with Carla Falb

In this episode, I have an enlightening conversation with artist Carla Falb, who shares her unique journey through art, spirituality, and personal growth. We explore the profound influence her father's role as a Methodist minister had on her early understanding of mysticism and creativity, and how these experiences shaped her artistic vision.

-----------------------------

Since 2002, Carla Falb has been creating paintings of roller coasters from images she captures on her GoPro while riding in the front car. Facing the initial fear and the adrenaline rush of the ride is infused into her work – like a 21st century J.M.W. Turner tied to the mast of a ship witnessing a storm at sea. To the casual viewer, her series depicts mere amusements, yet her underlying intention is that the roller coasters symbolize our experience in this life, with all its peaks and valleys. After the death of her mother on Christmas in 2016, her emphasis shifted to nighttime imagery with light bursting through the darkness. For Falb, the light in her paintings represents our divine sparks or higher selves, connected to one another in a universal field of consciousness.

Carla Falb was raised in Philadelphia and spent her summers at the Jersey Shore.  She was very close to her father, a Methodist minister, who shared his interest in mysticism with her, as well as his quirky sense of humor, love of art, music, dancing, and amusement parks! Falb received a B.F.A. from the Philadelphia College of Art and a Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1983.  During that time, after learning traditional drawing and painting techniques, she created paintings based on imagery from her dreams and visions. Twenty years later, Falb returned to Philadelphia and attended the University of the Arts for her M.F.A. where she began painting roller coaster structures.

In addition to her painting practice, Falb has taught art full time since 1987. She received a Dodge Foundation Fellowship for Artists/Educators that funded her travel to Southern California in 2009 to record source imagery for her Roller Coaster Series.  During her visit, Falb fell in love with the area, and relocated to Orange County in 2017 where she is currently a tenured professor at Fullerton College.

Exhibition highlights include solo exhibits at the Billis Williams Gallery in Los Angeles, where she is represented, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ Alumni Gallery. Her work was also featured in exhibits at the Preston Contemporary Art Center in New Mexico, and at the Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey.  The Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts recently commissioned and acquired one of her HangTime paintings, which feature the light streams of a roller coaster captured on a nighttime helicopter ride.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
Healing and Transformation with Kelly Joy Ladd

In this episode, I have a profound conversation with visual artist Kelly Joy Ladd, diving deep into her transformative journey of healing and creativity. We explore her traumatic head injury and how it catalyzed a significant shift in her life and art practice, leading her to embrace her spirituality and authenticity fully.

-------------------

Ladd‘s work responds to themes of cosmic and creative mysteries, exploring inner and outer space, spiritually, the connection of all things and understanding the universe and our roles and purpose in it.

Ladd’s Liberal Studies degree from the University of Central Florida allowed her to opportunity to explore the subjects that peaked her curiosity like astronomy, physics and creative writing. During this time, she also discovered eastern philosophies and meditation, which has been a staple and major influence in her life and art practice.

Before becoming a full-time artist in 2019, she worked as a Disney World parade performer, music writer for HardRock.com, an editor and prop stylist for Parenting magazine and a freelance craft designer and blogger. All the while, she was developing her own style and unique techniques using paper as her main medium, due to her husband’s adverse health reactions to chemicals and paint.

In March 2020, Ladd experienced a significant head injury, which greatly affected her vision. Since then, she has been retraining her brain and eyes to refocus and track again. During her recovery when she wasn’t able to read, watch TV, or look at phones and computers, Ladd used this time, without outside distractions or influences, to devote her full attention to her art and meditation practices.

Her 3-D paper and mixed media work has been exhibited in the Mennello Museum of American Art and the Cummer Museum Art and Gardens.

Ladd’s intuitive artistic approach aligns her with her influences transcendental artists Hilma af Klint, Agnes Pelton and Emma Kunz.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
Wading Through The Cosmic Mush With Emily Weiner

In this episode, I have an enriching conversation with visual artist Emily Weiner. We delve into her captivating work, exploring themes like the archetypes of the collective unconscious, Carl Jung, and Joseph Campbell. We discuss the relationship between universal archetypal spaces and painting, highlighting how art serves as a medium to express symbolic ideas that are often challenging to articulate.

Emily shares her creative process, from the initial stages of her paintings to the intricate creation of her ceramic frames. Our discussion spans various topics, including the intersection of spiritual identity and artistic identity, and the profound connections between personal experiences and universal truths. We also touch upon the influence of Jungian psychology and mythology on her work, and how these elements provide a structured framework for symbolism.

Weiner's journey is fascinating, from her academic background to her role as a curator at Vanderbilt University, where she curated a show that explored symbols and archetypes. This experience further validated her approach to art, blending scholarly insights with intuitive creativity. We also explore the impact of family and personal life on her artistic practice, and how her experiences as a parent have shaped her perspective and work.

Emily's work is a beautiful balance of objective and subjective components of the unconscious reality we all inhabit. Her use of symbols, color palettes, and compositions invites viewers to connect with deeper layers of meaning and universal truths. This conversation is a deep dive into the spiritual and creative processes that drive her art, offering listeners a glimpse into the mind of a truly insightful artist.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
It's All Connected With Jen Stark

In this episode I have an amazing conversation with visual artist Jen Stark.  We talk about her origins in art making and how the natural world always fascinated her from the time she was child.  We discussed what sparked her distinctive style back in the early 2000s when she was studying abroad in France,  and how that practiced evolved to all the powerful and innovative work she is making today.  Together we dive into the power of the psychedelic experience and the potential that art has to promote healing and altered states of awareness.  Jen shares about her interest in sound and installation art along with her interest in meditative practice.  We discuss what’s inspiring her in the studio today and where she thinks her art is headed.

--------------------------

Visual artist Jen Stark transforms complex ideas about fractals, evolution, color theory, topography, sacred geometries, and patterns of the universe into approachable and engaging works of art. Drawing upon an ever expanding use of material and technology, Stark allows her aesthetic to transcend all forms of media, ranging from paintings and sculptures, animations and installations, to interactive projections and NFTs. Self- Written Spirituality with David Onri Anderson

In this episode I am joined by Nashville based artist David Onri Anderson.  This conversation went to a lot of amazing places. We began by talking about David’s spirituality and its connection to his past and his ancestors. He tells a harrowing story of a near death experience that impacted him greatly.  We also discuss the influence the natural world has on his art making as well as his own personal spirituality.  We discuss the nature of spiritual art and the importance it plays in the past and the importance we both believe it will play in our future.  We talk about the art world and the nature of commerce and how we may create new paradigms for artists to exist in, paradigms that allow for a lot more artists to find true sustainability.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
Sensory Experience with Theresa Daddezio

In this episode Theresa and I talk about the power of perception, sensation, and the way that abstract painting is the perfect way to express these intangible experiences.  We explore the relationship with the outer world and the patterns we find in nature and how they can help us bridge the gap between our inner lives. We talk about  sacred geometry in historical painting and how that relates to what we do today, along with the power meditation and yoga practice have over the way we connect with a deeper sense of self.  Theresa also talks about her painting practice and her intuitive approach to crafting these dynamic works of art.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
Reclaiming Spirituality with Jared Freschman

In this episode I dive deep with visual artist Jared Freschman about his personal spiritual journey. We talk about the importance of finding new modes of spiritual identity. We talk about how organized religion typically doesn’t create space for Queer people and how that drove him to find his own way of connecting to the mystical and magical components of life.  We talk about the influence Tarot and Astrology has had on him, as well as his own Jewish background.  We discuss the power of art to carve out these new kinds of spiritual spaces for people like himself.  We also dive into his own personal color theory and his approach to creating these powerful, personal expressions of his own spiritual identity.

---------------

Jared Freschman (b. 1996) is a Jewish-American artist based in NYC. Originally from Hockessin, Delaware. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2018. Freschman also studied abroad in Jerusalem, Israel/ Palestine at Bezalel School of Art and Design. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.Jared Freschman’s fluid compositions conjure the hidden spiritual practices of today’s queer youth. Ombré fades and jewel-tone color palettes open a door to nostalgic, dream-like memories. Freschman illustrates allegories that combine vivid flashbacks, mysticism, and hyper-feminine archetypes that own the composition. He builds a liminal space where control lies in the hands of queer individuals. Perspectives shift from first to third person, and the artist’s lived experiences mingle with those of a broader queer collective.Freschman has exhibited his work internationally at Field Projects (NYC), Eve Leibe Gallery (London), PRIOR Art Space (Barcelona), The National Arts Club (NYC), The Untitled Space (NYC), Project Gallery V (NYC), GIFC (Norway), The Museum of American Illustration (NYC), Cooler Gallery (Brooklyn), The Delaware Contemporary (Wilmington, DE), Israel Illustration Week (Tel Aviv), Gallery 102 (Washington DC), The Delaware Art Museum (Wilmington, DE). His work has been featured in Marie Claire Taiwan, Dirtybarn, Artforum, ARTpublika Magazine, AIGA Eye on Design, Working Not Working, The Drawing Stall, FORGE Art Magazine, and more. Freschman has also received awards from American Illustration & Society of Illustrators.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
World Building with Hazel Florez

In this episode I am joined by visual artist Hazel Florez, where we get deep into the esoteric tradition of the west.  We begin by discussing her dramatic shift in interest toward the occult and esoteric and how that discovery slowly began to guide her toward her creative work.  We discuss the importance of reclaiming our spiritual identity in these modern times of distraction and hyper-materialism.  We dive into her work as an artist and how she explores new ways of expressing ideas from tarot, alchemy, and the pagan sensibilities of pre-christian and European spirituality.

------------------------

Hazel Florez is an artist, researcher and writer. Hazel is multidisciplinary artist making paintings, drawings, costumes, photography and mixed media collage. Her work draws on a range of mystical influences for inspiration, including the rich symbolic traditions of Jungian archetypal psychology, tarot, astrology, alchemy, mythology, and folklore. Florez’s paintings are made with the intention of drawing the viewer into a slower and meditative state of mind, where prolonged viewing is rewarded with intricate detail. Her paintings act like portals inviting the viewer to enter mythopoetic Otherworlds. Esoteric and surreal Hazel's images weave new stories of their own, often mixing reverence with playful irreverence.

She has an MFA from Edinburgh and taught at Queen Mary University London before becoming an artist. She has participated in many solo and group shows in London. She has participated and given talks at a range of venues and events including the Jung Club, the Magical Women’s Conference and Occulture Conference Berlin and The Last Tuesday Society. She was shortlisted for the London College of Psychic Studies annual art competition 2022. She is currently writing articles for World of Interiors magazine. Her work is due to be published in a book by Taschen called 'Sacred Sites' released with The Library of Esoterica February 2024.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
Ecological Consciousness with Fuchsia

In this episode, with visual artist Fuchsia, we discuss her powerful paintings and how she explores the duality of the angelic and the earthly.  We talk about her background growing up abroad in places like Hong Kong and India and how that influenced her world view. We dig into spirituality and spiritual practice and how that informs her work .  Together, we also dive deep, discussing the importance of the ecological crisis and how the elevation of consciousness is crucial for humanity to move forward and heal our collective wounds.

-------------------

I just finished a one-year residency at Sarabande (Alexander McQueen Foundation) in east London. Since September, 2022 I have had the opportunity to have four solo shows (one in Paris, one at the Sixi Museum in Nanjing, one at Roman Road Gallery in London and one at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery in Hong Kong) as well as take part in three group shows (including one at Christie's Lates).

A few words on my practice to give you an idea...

I am a mixed-media artist (under the name of fuchsia), working primarily with watercolour and oils and am interested in exploring environmental subjects through harmonious colour palettes and spiritual iconography. I create dream-like landscapes inspired by the renaissance period, Chinese landscape painting, and a few incredible 20th-century surrealist painters (Georgia O'Keeffe, Agnes Pelton...).

There are a few recurring core symbols within my 'ethereal landscapes' (heavily influenced by dreams and the subconscious), including angels and pearls. Angels, having been represented for hundreds of years throughout art history, are, to me, universal symbols representing the deepest state of our core as humans - love, vulnerability and innocence - all things we regrettably and gradually let go of when entering adulthood. My paintings aim to highlight certain conflicting moral forces we face in today’s complex world, namely issues on climate change and 'spiritual famine' which seem to often preoccupy the minds of the angels.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
States Of Awe With Kelsey Brookes

Last Episode of 2023!

In this episode, Kelsey and I discuss the origins of his art , stemming from his time working as a scientist, and how his interests and passions for art took him on a winding unexpected journey to where he is today. We discuss the intersection of science and art, sacred geometry, and the mystery of consciousness. We talk about his approach to his work and its relationship with meditation, along with the importance of gratitude and the experience of awe in everyday life.  It was such a fun and rich discussion that you all are going to love!

-------------------------------------

KELSEY BROOKES is a former scientist who uses his background in biological and empirical methodology to develop a new genre of art. In his practice, Brookes adopts ideas found in logic and natural systems, such as molecular and atomic structures or number sequences, to build compositions that blur boundaries between the analytic and the creative. This approach drives the foundation of lively and colorful work that is both meticulously crafted and conceptually rigorous. His intricate paintings and sculptures find a unique balance within the juxtaposition of subjectivity and objectivity, as well as theory and aesthetic. Brookes dives into the discoveries of physicians, mathematicians, and chemists as only a scientist is capable, and, through the use of color and form, expresses this knowledge to the world in an abstract and luminous manner as only an artist is capable. Embodying an experimental nature that is mutual of science and art, Brookes is constantly growing his practice, whether it be through the exploration of unfamiliar media, or the employment of a new technique to further his study and anomalous presentation of biochemical substances.
Brookes has had solo exhibitions in La Jolla, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London and Berlin. His work was featured as the cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2012 “I’m With You” record and The Flaming Lips’ 2013 “Stone Roses” LP. KELSEY BROOKES: Psychedelic Space is the artist’s first monograph and examines three years of work and four solo exhibitions. His work belongs in esteemed private collections, as well as the public permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation.

A Natural Process With Dan Huston

In this episode I am joined by visual artist Dan Huston.  During this episode Dan and I had an incredible conversation around his highly disciplined and prolific drawing practice. We talked about his origins with art and why drawing seems to speak to him so inimitably compared to any other medium. We discuss our shared interests in the magic of the natural world along with the mirroring of forms in both the micro and macro cosmic scales.  We also touch upon his playful and organic approach to his work, and the motivations that drive his commitment to his art practice.

Concerning The Spiritual In Art
A spiritual renaissance is upon us and its influences are being reflected in a lot of the art we are seeing today. “Concerning the Spiritual in Art," a podcast hosted by artist Martin Benson, explores spirituality, consciousness and the creative process. This podcast highlights innovative artists working across a variety of genres and mediums. The hope is that these conversations inspire, perplex, and ultimately emphasize the importance of the creative process and how it can be a vehicle for both individual and collective transformation.
