Complete Global Saturation: An Unofficial History Of Resident Evil - Vol 2
Complete Global Saturation: Episode 8 - Resident Evil 7 feat. John Linneman from Digital Foundry

In the latest episode, Alex is joined in person in Tokyo once again, this time by John Linneman - writer, content creator of DF Retro, and all around tech guru from Digital Foundry. They sit down with Rob to talk about the development history of Resident Evil 7. Very much an important title to Alex as an experience learning about it's development is what inspired his first book originally.

A return to a first person viewpoint, only previously seen in spin-offs and mini-games was not what anyone was probably expecting - no less Alex who was shocked when he found out about it sometime before the games official reveal. But the original concept, art direction, early VR support, as well as the then new 'REach for the moon Engine' (RE Engine) all lined up to create an amazing title.

While reviews were generally positive, and the sales okay, eventually RE7 took off eventually becoming Capcom's highest selling single RE title for quite a number of years, helped by its extensive DLC, long life support, and the success of its VR inclusion. John especially talks across the various technical elements that helped bring it to life and propel it to such an iconic status in the franchise.

So join us as we talk through all of this and more on this episode of Complete Global Saturation!

(Please be aware this episode was recorded some weeks back prior to the announcement of Resident Evil Requiem).

This 12 episode limited podcast series is a follow up to Alex Aniel's book, 'Itchy, Tasty: A Unofficial History of Resident Evil' - which covers the first decade of the series from its origins in the early 1990s through to 2006. The book is available online at the usual retailers, in bookstores, or can be purchased directly from Alex's website - www.cvxfreak.com - which you can also have signed by Alex.

Complete Global Saturation: An Unofficial History Of Resident Evil - Vol 2
Complete Global Saturation: Episode 7 - Resident Evil Revelations 2 feat. Moni from Resident Evil Database

In the latest episode, Alex is joined in person in Tokyo by Moni from Resident Evil Database, one of Brazil's largest fan sites, while on her latest visit to Japan. They sit down with Rob to talk about the creation and reaction to what stands as currently Capcom's last major spin-off title in the series, Resident Evil Revelations 2.

10 years on from its release its been interesting to see both the impact it has had on the series but also what has not been followed up on, and the three discuss the impact of the announcement, the horror and fear focused elements, and the current focus of the series - and if Capcom will consider returning to the dangling threads left behind.

So join us as we talk through all of this and more on this episode of Complete Global Saturation!

Complete Global Saturation: An Unofficial History Of Resident Evil - Vol 2
Complete Global Saturation: Episode 6 - Resident Evil Remasters and HD Ports (plus Umbrella Corps too!)

In this episode, Alex and Rob take a trip back to the 2010's - when in an era where Capcom was figuring out the future of the franchise, they also revisited and expanded the past to new platforms, new engines, and HD displays! Remasters and HD Ports for everyone!

Between 2011 and 2019, and including during the franchises 20th anniversary in 2016, many of the titles released in the franchise were revisiting ones from the past. From Revelations moving from handhelds to HDTV's, Resident Evil 4 still seeing numerous ports almost 15 years on from its original release, the amazing ports of the Gamecube era Resident Evil Remake and Zero to nearly every platform, Code Veronica in HD and somehow then back to SD... and much much more. We step through the history of this crazy time period and try and make sense of it all.

Of course not all of it could be great, and there was also one major spin-off in this era we have to mention... Umbrella Corps. A mixed project with mixed focus and mixed understanding, we also take some time to look into this oddity of the franchise to figure out what just was the thoughts behind it.

This is weird episode, but we certainly think it's a great one. So join us as we talk through all of this and more on this episode of Complete Global Saturation!

Complete Global Saturation: An Unofficial History Of Resident Evil - Vol 2
Complete Global Saturation: Episode 5 - Resident Evil 6 - Feat. Gene Park - Videogame Journalist @ The Washington Post

In this episode, Alex and Rob are joined by Washington Post Game Journalist Gene Park. Together we take a trip back to Tall Oaks, Lanshiang, and Edonia as Resident Evil 6 is revisited in all its glory.

After an intro with Gene on his history of gaming and how he ended up writing coverage of videogames for The Washington Post in recent years, a breakdown of the development history of Resident Evil 6 leads us into the deeper breakdown of the games design itself. Diving into both shows us why it was both such a failure upon release - and somehow now redeemed itself as an unexpected success for Capcom in recent years.

Alex and Rob haven't always been the biggest fans of this very divisive title, but know it has a fan base and Gene certainly reminds us why - to the point where all of us and hopefully you listening will be reminded of why Resident Evil 6 was such a unique title and one even possibly worth revisiting.

Complete Global Saturation: An Unofficial History Of Resident Evil - Vol 2
Complete Global Saturation: Episode 4 - Revelations, Mercenaries 3D & Resident Evil Portable - Feat. JJ from Residence of Evil

In this episode, Alex and Rob are joined by JJ from the massive fan community Residence of Evil, to look back at the history of the 3DS portable era, including Mercenaries 3D and Revelations on the 3DS. As well back at the announcement of the vaporware that was Resident Evil Portable on the PSP in 2009.

After catching up with JJ and how he got involved in the fan community, as this was just days after the reveal of the new Resident Evil title Requiem, we all have a brief chat on what this means for the franchise before heading onto the main topic.

There we start by looking back to the early days of portable Resident Evil with a quick recap of the history of portable titles and the decisions that lead to both 3DS titles.

We then discuss the intent of what was and what could have been on the 3DS, as well as a follow up on the HD versions of Revelations which came to the WiiU, PS3, PS4, XB360, XB1 and Switch. As well as what the chances are of any future unique handheld Resident Evil adventures.

Complete Global Saturation: An Unofficial History Of Resident Evil - Vol 2
Complete Global Saturation: Episode 3 - Umbrella & Darkside Chronicles

In this episode, Alex and Rob sit down to discuss the two Resident Evil rail shooter titles released for the Nintendo Wii in the late 2000s.

The guys start with a brief recap of covering both the history of Resident Evil on Nintendo until their development, as well as the decisions that saw the low budget surprise success of Umbrella Chronicles and the larger budgeted follow up in Darkside Chronicles fill the gaps in the franchise narratives .

This also leads the guys to look into what makes a retelling of events so interesting or controversial, the realities of the low budget development and outside support companies, and much, much, more in this episode - which even surprised the two guys as to how much they actually had to discuss.

Complete Global Saturation: An Unofficial History Of Resident Evil - Vol 2
Complete Global Saturation: Episode 2 - Resident Evil 5 & Gold Edition

In the first full length episode of the series, Alex and Rob talk through the lengthy development history of 2009's Resident Evil 5 - and its subsequent DLC and complete Gold Edition releases.

After the massive high mark Capcom staff had achieved with the release of Resident Evil 4, expectations were high for the next big title in the series. But shifts within Capcom, extremely early promotion in mid-2005, and the shift to new a new engine and HD gaming platforms all started a multi-year development unlike any Capcom had produced to that point.

Through massive changes to the games formula from the past, to heat and outside sunny locations, potential naive misunderstandings and cultural controversies, and to a Hollywood motion capture focused cutscene showcase and a marketing campaign like no other before it - Resident Evil 5 would become unlike anything else in the series to date.
