Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov was a lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who played a key role in the 1983 Soviet nuclear false alarm incident. He prevented the annihilation of the human species. He saw past what everyone else was telling him he needed to do. Despite his training he chose the action that had more benefits and less cost. Reason told him to push the button but he was sufficiently committed to the survival of the human species. He felt his enemies had attacked him in his country and his duty was to destroy them while he still could. We also feel like we're under attack from our enemies. The Republican party and Democrat party continually tell us that our political enemies are acting badly are attacking us are trying to destroy our way of life. Our political parties and media keep alarming us that we are under attack and that we need to respond with hatred and anger. We need to ignore those who say we are under attack. We need to step into a place of calm clarity that can only be achieved through and a conversation with the outside world that's clarifies misunderstandings. He was able to check his equipment and confirm that the message that there were incoming missiles was an error. He waited too long and if they would have been missiles he would have failed his assignment. but our assignment shouldn't be to revenge the attack that doesn't really happen. Our real assignment is to ensure that continued existence of the human species and not to respond to every perceived attack. We can do this by using an open source cost benefit analysis. The only way forward is to take every precaution to be 100% sure that the strength of our assumptions is directly related to the strength of the evidence. We need to do this in a slow humble system that has self-doubt. The cost benefit analysis is the ultimate act of humility. it doesn't say we have the truth and you need to understand why I'm true. It says come let us reason together and will follow the evidence. We need a political party that has this level of humility this level of self-doubt and this level of respect for a reason and respect for humanity.
