Den här veckan pratar vi om den 110 860 km² stora ö som så många har och haft av tankar, anspråk och synpunkter på, nämligen Kuba! Leonard Cohen var där och ville vara med i revolutionen, men lyckades komma precis när Grisbuktsinvasionen var i antågande och misstogs för spion. Tillsammans med min vän och kamrat Bita Yari pratar jag om Kuba, revolutionsromantik och hennes resa dit för ett antal år sen.

Från sommarpratare till Cohenpoddenpratare – i detta avsnitt möte jag Mäster Mikael Wiehe och pratar om Flickan från landet i Norr (pjäsen, Malmö Stadsteater, våren 2025), mannen från landet i Söder (andalusiske Federico Garcia Lorca, 1898-1936) och den ständige Mannen från landet i Väst (den quebecske charmören Leonard Norman Cohen). Temaavsnitten om judisk humor går i mål! Tredje gången gillt för skådespelaren Ronn Elfors Lipsker då vi pratar om Cohens mörkare humor, som framkommer bland annat i Tower of Song, Puppets och inte minst hans mellansnack och dikter! Håll till godo med den tredje timmen judisk humor, ett ämne som trots att vi använt tre avsnitt till det ännu inte känns uttömt.
Vårt samtal om judisk humor fortsätter – och går över på mer allvarliga tassemarker, då Sisters of Mercy kommer upp på agendan, sången som skrevs en vinternatt på ett hotell i Edmonton men som fått form, vingar och betytt så mycket för så många (men det känns ändå som att Cohen sjunger den till just dig).

Arvida Svenske, out of Stockholm, Sweden talks to Bård Kjøge Rønning out of Norway about Axel, who was born in 1960 and grew up on Hydra, a Greek Island with mother Marianne Ihlen and Leonard Cohen as a stepfather from very early on. Vem var nu Kajsa Grytt nu igen? Hon var ju den kvinna som skrivit två av de bästa låtarna på svenska om kvinnlig lust (det är Dunkar varmt och Slicka mig ren!), och som Leonard Cohens musik väckte något hos som resonerar än idag. Hon var också medlem i bandet Tant Strul när det begav sig, gör numera musik under eget namn på svenska, hade precis hittat till ett nytt musikaliskt uttryck nere i Aten när vi spelade in detta – och skriver även romaner, passande nog om en kvinna i öknen!

... we're back in Sweden-land (och tillbaka på svenska) diskuterar jag och min musikaliske vän Peter Granström nationalism, Nyamko Sabuni och ny, rå musik som han nyligen släppt. Som första avsnitt spelas det live, både på svenska och franskan. Dessutom: den mycket fascinerande låtskriverskan som skrev The Partisan i original: balletdansösen och revolutionären Anna Marly, född under oktoberrevolutionen för att sedan hamna mitt i hetluften under ett annat krig – det där hon var "cautioned to surrender/ but this I could not do".
Peter Granström gör numera musik under eget namn på svenska, och släppte under 2024's sista skälvande månader sin EP där låten "Natten" doftar Leonard Cohen och mystik.

"People who live in port-towns are always fascinated to find out where the ships go".
Arvida Svenske, out of Stockholm, Sweden talks to John L Williams out of Cardiff, Wales about a fleeting friend of Leonard Cohen (out of Montreal, Canada): Michael X, out of Port of Spain, Trinidad.
In a very alternative timeline, Leonard Cohen could have been the Minister of Tourism in a revolutionary government, seated firmly in the republic of Trinidad & Tobago. At least, that's one offer he got in his time in London, just before he got to Hydra and the world became a place where the TV-set could portray colour. The offer came from one sparkplug, idea-machinegun and revolutionary troublemaker of a man, who would go on to start the Notting Hill festival, the Black Power commune known as Black House – and get John and Yoko to cut off their hair to benefit said commune, a "boy who was drawn to the streets", the Trinidadian trickster Michael de Freitas, later known publicly by the name of Michael X (as well as Abdul Malik.
Detailing his life, from growing up in the poor (but not the poorest) parts of Port of Spain (Belmont, at the foot of the Laventille Hills), to attending one of the two private schools in Trinidad in the 1930's, then travelling to Barbados, the Caribbean and finally ending up in the capital of the crumbling empire: London. From there the roads would cross with revolutionaries (namely Malcolm X, who would inspire him to further activism), musicians and people in all walks of life who would agree that the remnants of a worldwide empire founded on racism had inherited... racism. What they fought were institutions and power structures who basically agreed with that... but that it wasn't such a bad thing. Follow us through the life and times of a controversial revolutionary who would define and find himself in many of the strifes and opportunities that the mid 1900's offered.
Come gather round, and hear the tale of Michael X, a tale that like (for many revolutionarys) would end in a noose in the Royal Gaol.
