What next for EU climate policy?
With the recent EU elections behind us, the challenge arises of how to continue the momentum towards climate neutrality while navigating the evolving political landscape. The focus now shifts to implementing the policy framework left behind by the last Commission, while also developing new, ambitious climate policies.

The cross-cutting nature of climate change requires that climate policies are aligned across all sectors and move away from incremental policymaking practices - often characterized by 'silo' thinking. This ensures coherent consideration of climate policy objectives and targets, fostering synergies and complementarities among policies. To achieve this so-called mainstreaming, all branches of government and institutions must coordinate at all stages of the policymaking process.

The investment challenge is fundamental to mobilizing financial resources for the transformation toward climate neutrality. Every investment decision today locks us into a specific future - we must be careful about directing investment flows meaningfully. Maximizing green investments and providing predictability for economic actors need coordination at EU level and policies effectively promoting the transformation towards climate neutrality. Key policies should consider, among others, a long-term climate investment plan, securing adequate public funding and making sure the banking sector is implementing the existing regulations properly.

Infrastructure is key to the transition from a society based on fossil fuels to one that is powered by renewable energy. While most of the infrastructure planning and decision-making is done at national level, the EU has a significant coordinating role, especially in the rollout of cross-border infrastructure. Stronger EU-level governance can thus lead to a more resilient and cost-efficient climate neutral energy system, which is needed to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

Innovation plays a key role in steering the EU towards climate neutrality by 2050. Both the public and private sectors need innovation to develop and adopt cutting-edge technologies, transformative climate policies and novel business practices tailored for a climate-neutral society. Today, some innovations are market-ready, such as solar power, but many others still need to be invented and scaled up to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

As concern for our planet's health continues to rise, climate policy has taken center stage in political discussions worldwide.
