In this episode, we dive into the Amsterdam City Rights movement—a unique bottom-up movement in Amsterdam fighting for the rights of undocumented people in the city. We’ll talk with Hidaya Nampiima, Ugandanhuman rights advocate, once the most famous undocumented person and today one of the most outspoken refugee activists in Amsterdam, and Savannah Koolen, founder and director of Here to Support and with more than ten years experience in advocating for undocumented people’s rights.
Amsterdam City Rights is a coalition of people with and without residency permits, created in 2018 from a grassroot community protesting against the unjust asylum system and xenophobic migration policies. The community meets twice a month to discuss common projects and ideas, participates in demonstrations, conferences and workshops. Amsterdam City Rights has been creating many projects and today manages the City Rights Radio and the City Rights App, with the help of the NGO Here to Support.

Fighting for visibility and basic human rights in 2012
In this episode, we talk with Yoonis Osman Noor, activist from Somalia, about the We Are Here movement—a landmark protest in Amsterdam’s activist history that sparked change for undocumented communities across the Netherlands. Yoonis is a human rights defender andone of the spokesmen of the movement.
We Are Here started in 2012 when a group of squatting migrants began protesting against the lack of shelters for undocumented people and the unjust asylum system. This protest resulted in the rise of public awareness and recognition of the issues faced by rejected asylum seekers, with the opening of shelters known as BBB (Bed, Bad, Brood), and the LVV (Landelijke Vreemdelingenvoorzieningen).

In this episode, with Hans Krikke, a journalist and historian, we dive into the history of migrant activism in the Netherlands. Hans is an activist, founder and director of Ru Paré, and author of the book "Witte Illegalen in Hongerstaking" (White Illegals in Hungerstrike).
The Witte Illegalen (White Illegals), were Turkish, Moroccan and Kurdish people who were invited to the Netherlands to work in the 60s and 70s, but then the Dutch state wanted to send them back to their countries. Without other options, they had to fight for their rights to be recognised in this country.

The struggle for freedom has long been intertwined with the fight against imperialism and women’s oppression. Imperialism reinforces patriarchal structures, deepens gender disparities, and sustains systems of power that disproportionately victimize women. The cultural norms imposed by colonial powers continue to shape and uphold these oppressive systems.
In this episode, we explore:
• How imperialism and patriarchy intersect to limit women’s rights and freedoms.
• The historical and ongoing struggles of women resisting both colonial legacies and gender oppression.
• What liberation truly looks like and how we can fight for a future free from both imperialism and gender-based oppression.
How can we dismantle these systems and push for genuine equality and freedom? Join us in this important conversation on resistance, activism, and collective liberation.

What Is It Like to Be an Undocumented Asylum Seeker in the Netherlands?
Fear, anxiety, trauma. Being undocumented leaves long-term scars. Excluded from society, illegalized migrants are denied the right to work, rent a house, or study.
In this third and final episode of our podcast series on migration and asylum ahead of the 2024 Dutch elections, City Rights Radio explores one of the most complex and pressing issues today: the marginalization of undocumented migrants.
Our host Joygail Caupain speaks with:
• Nadine, an undocumented refugee activist whose asylum request has been refused, sharing her struggle for dignity and survival.
• Mo (Mohamed Bah), founder of City Rights Radio, who reflects on his own past experiences of being undocumented and the fight for recognition.
Their stories provide a clear picture of the personal and societal impact of being undocumented while offering insights and solutions to challenge this system of exclusion.

City Rights Radio S3E2 – Facts and Fake News in the Dutch Elections: Housing Rights, Refugees’ Rights?
In this episode of City Rights Radio, we dive into the housing crisis in the Netherlands and how it affects asylum seekers, refugees, and the wider population.
Asylum seekers and refugees face a lack of stable housing, frequent relocations between reception centers, and a system that keeps them in a constant state of stress and uncertainty. But these challenges are not unique to migrants—the Dutch housing market itself is in crisis.
To break down fact from fiction, our host Joygail Caupain speaks with:
• Hidaya, an activist and feminist from Uganda, and founder of the Amsterdam City Rights coalition, who shares the struggles of finding housing as an asylum seeker.
• Melissa, founder of WoonProtest, who explains why the Dutch housing market is collapsing and why the issue is bigger than migration alone.
Their stories prove that the claim that refugees are “stealing houses” is simply false—the real issue lies in a failing housing system that affects everyone.

Hans-Peter from the Amsterdam Coordination Point for Undocumented People, Savannah Koolen from Here to Support, Hidaya from Amsterdam City Rights, and I (Mohamed Bah) come together to discuss the crucial collaboration between formal organizations and informal networks.
While grassroots communities provide immediate support, formal organizations offer structure, advocacy, and long-term solutions. But how do these systems work together? What challenges do they face? And how can we strengthen these collaborations to ensure better protection, resources, and rights for undocumented people in Amsterdam?

In this episode of City Rights Radio, Haitham, Eunice, and I (Mohamed Bah) discuss the power of informal organizations and the crucial role of self-organizing communities in supporting undocumented people.
Across the Netherlands, migrant communities and allies work tirelessly—often without formal recognition—to ensure safety, provide resources, and defend human rights. These grassroots efforts make a huge difference, proving that solidarity and mutual aid are essential where official systems fail.
To everyone at the table and the communities behind them, thank you for the incredible work that you do!
