Why PA Can't Pay Its Bills
It's official: Corey O'Connor is Pittsburgh's next mayor — and we're all crossing our fingers that there'll be a state budget in place by the time he takes office in January. Pennsylvania is the only state in the nation that hasn't passed a budget. The consequences have been dire, from school districts taking on loans to rape crisis centers cutting staff. PA Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton has a prime seat at the negotiation table as our state's top Democratic legislator. She joins City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri to share her take on what's causing the holdup and explain how it's affecting everyday Pennsylvanians. The Eerie Tale of Pittsburgh’s Glowing Green Man
Halloween's a time for spooky stories and urban legends. Here in Western Pennsylvania, there's a story about a man — a spectre with a glowing green face — who you might see roaming around the side of the road late at night. He may have been burned by acid or fire, or  maybe got struck by lightning. While those details are squishy, the real story behind "The Monster of Beaver County" is a tragic one. City Cast's Wil Fulton is here to explain how Charlie No-Face left an eerie mark on him as a kid, plus how the Green Man's story has been told and misunderstood by generations of Pittsburghers.  Special thanks to City Cast's roving producer Elizabeth Kauma for her work on this one. Music and some sound effects courtesy of Epidemic Sound. **This episode originally published October 18, 2023. Pittsburgh Halloween Costumes, County Cancels Christmas, and a Zoo Lawsuit
National Geographic says Pittsburgh is one of the best places in the world to visit in 2026, Bon Appetit featured — of all places — The Squirrel Cage, and a South Side brewery was named the best in the nation. City Cast Pittsburgh’s Megan Harris and Sophia Lo are talking about six different national lists we should be proud to make, plus a couple that just made us laugh. Also, the downstream effects of the state budget stalemate are coming home to roost: Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced all the nice things we won’t be getting, Allegheny County officials canceled Christmas decor and tours at the historic Hartwood Acres Mansion, and an animal rights group is suing the Pittsburgh Zoo. Plus we’re sharing some of our favorite mostly-last-minute Pittsburgh costume ideas, including several submitted by you! What’s your favorite Pittsburgh costume? Call or text us at 412-212-8893. Restaurants, Party Barges & Bathrooms on the Riverfront
Pittsburgh's riverfront spaces have come a long way over the past couple of decades. For example, we can sit and relax at Point State Park, and this year, Riverlife launched Shore Thing, so Pittsburghers can do yoga, dance, and enjoy snacks by the water. Will Gainey Veto His Own Housing Plan?
Everyone agrees Pittsburgh needs more housing, but how to build it — and ensure at least some of it is affordable — is trickier. Mayor Ed Gainey proposed a package of ideas last year that included requiring developers to set aside affordable units in big, new buildings. Then came a competing proposal. Then months of talks. At the end, deputy mayor Jake Pawlak says he thought the city had found a compromise with City Councilor Erika Strassburger. Host Megan Harris is back with Pawlak talking about why he says the mayor's office was “blindsided” by her recent amendment to Gainey’s plan — and why Gainey may veto it if he gets the chance. Can Pittsburgh Afford the NFL Draft?
Mayor Ed Gainey is on his way out, but not before a new city budget gets passed. Critics are calling his 2026 plan “sloppy,” “spiteful,” and “an indication of mismanagement.” Gainey says the budget is sound. His right hand man, deputy mayor Jake Pawlak, sits down with host Megan Harris to defend the proposal and its bright spots, how we’re dealing with the loss of the jock tax, and whether we can cover all the overtime when the NFL Draft comes to town next year. PIT Says No to Noem, City Paper Goes Online & IZ Drama Continues
All the drama around inclusionary zoning is back and bigger than ever. Mayor Ed Gainey might even veto an affordable housing bill he’s been pushing for over a year. Host Megan Harris, executive producer Mallory Falk and producer Sophia Lo explain what to expect, the latest on City Paper, and why the biggest party of the year might just take place inside a 12-foot Millvale raccoon.
