Ever found yourself wondering what all the fuss around Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is actually about? Isn’t it the same as male circumcision, where only the foreskin is cut off? For the men, have you ever sat and imagined what your life would be like if your parents and relatives held you down as a teenage boy and cut off your penis, scrotum, and testicles, claiming this was the best way to celebrate you coming of age and calling it an important step towards claiming your manhood? Well, buckle up, folks, today’s episode is an intense one.
The WHO defines Female Genital Mutilation as comprising all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice has no health benefits for girls and women and can result in severe bleeding and problems urinating, and later cysts, menstrual difficulties, infections, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths. The practice of FGM is recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. The practice also violates a person's right to health, security, and physical integrity; the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment; and the right to life, in instances when the procedure results in death.
Dr. Muriu Kinuthia joins us on today’s episode to discuss in detail important aspects of FGM, including the reconstructive procedures available to women who were subjected to this practice. It is a very technical conversation, but both Dr. Muriu and Dr. Claire took time to help simplify the conversation so that you, the audience, can literally become an expert on the topic. We hope that by doing so, everyone watching or listening can fully understand and feel empowered enough to speak up in their own communities to help put an end to this dangerous practice.
Dr. Muriu Kinuthia is a Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeon in private practice in Nairobi, with a strong passion for microsurgery, a very complex and delicate aspect of his field. He is also an associate editor for a plastic surgery journal, the PRS Global Open. He strives to ensure that clinical practice is evidence-based and that patients receive care that is safe and that can be replicated internationally at the same high-quality standard. His hobbies include a passion for photography and playing the guitar, which serves as both a relaxation tool and a means to keep his hands well-exercised, given the intricate surgeries he performs.

On today’s episode, Dr. Claire hosts the amazing author Joan Thatiah to discuss her 5-book series “The confessions of Nairobi Men and Women”. Initially, this series trended online on the premise that it was about the debauchery that Nairobi is quite famous for, which got everyone running to secure their copies. For anyone who actually read the books though, they discovered a heartbreaking collection of true stories depicting abuse that adversely shaped or formed the basis for derailment of multiple lives. These are truly confronting and heartbreaking stories that made or broke those brave enough to share.
Dr. Claire explores Joan’s journey to becoming an author and how she came to compile the powerful stories in this series of books. They explore the culture of insect in families, SGBV and child sexual exploitation by those in positions of power, with an important focus on the impact these incidences have on the survivors and in some cases the perpetrators themselves. They also explore the power of storytelling in SGBV advocacy; how it helps educate others about perils they may never have otherwise considered, how it starts conversations in rooms where policies and laws can be created to protect vulnerable groups, and how it helps survivors find their voice and take their power back. Finally, they explore how Joan was able to debrief and take care of her own mental health after listening to such jarring and triggering stories of human suffering; how she discovered the importance of prioritising her own mental health and her role in helping amplify the voices of those often unheard or unbelieved and abandoned in Nairobi’s fast-paced man-eat-man culture.
Joan Thatiah is a celebrated award winning Kenyan author, journalist and fearless storyteller with a knack for capturing the nuances of modern Kenyan life. She is passionate about amplifying African voices and experiences, drawing inspiration from her surroundings. Her voice is unmistakeable: bold and deeply rooted in the realities of the people she writes about. If she weren’t a writer, she would be a psychiatrist because the human mind fascinates her.
The Confessions series consists of 5 books:
Confessions of Nairobi women
Confessions of Nairobi men
Confessions of Nairobi women book 2
Confessions of Nairobi men Book 2
Confessions of Nairobi men and women - The final chapter

This is a very special episode for Dr. Claire, who, despite being a fantastic women’s health specialist herself, battles ongoing debilitating pain from endometriosis and uterine fibroids; 2 very common Gynaecological chronic illnesses that she helps her patients navigate daily.
Once again, hosting the brilliant Mwari Muthaura, a clinical psychotherapist (herself also living with several chronic illnesses as discussed in the episode). The conversation today is a much-needed one, focusing on the emotional and psychological/mental health aspects of chronic illness, especially focused on women. Despite living longer than men on average, it has been found that women spend an average of 25% more years in poor health. This translates to a woman living an average of 9 years of her life in poor health.
The women's health gap refers to the systemic underfunding, lack of research, and biased data that lead to disparities in healthcare access, diagnosis, and treatment for women, resulting in poorer health outcomes and significant economic costs. This gap arises from traditional healthcare systems failing to account for biological and gender differences, leading to conditions like heart attack symptoms being missed in women and adverse drug reactions being more common due to exclusion from clinical trials. This results in a woman struggling with poor health at a time when she should be at her peak, which affects her ability to be present and/or productive at home, at work, and in her community.
Mwari & Dr. Claire discuss several key aspects to chronic illness from common reactions when a difficult diagnosis is confirmed, including the various stages of grief experienced, (including for those notorious type A high-achievers who struggle significantly with accepting their health becoming a limitation to their carefully mapped out goals and success) They explore the stigma, judgment and criticism women face at home and in the work place for failing to perform at 100% even as they juggle medical treatments, repeat surgeries and mental anguish from debilitating illness. They share advice to caregivers and medics looking after these women, to help them support their loved ones and patients better.
This episode is a powerful one, so brace yourself to take some extensive notes and likely shed a few tears. It includes a very vulnerable session where Mwari guides Dr. Claire through an exercise designed to help you, listening or watching at home, to deeply explore your own situation in a meaningful manner. Consider it a first step in the right direction for anyone facing a major health scare or challenging diagnosis.
Mwari is an American-trained, certified Psychotherapist working both in private practice as well as in the corporate space here in Kenya. She is also very artistic & creates her own line of gorgeous #madeinKenya jewellery.

This episode of ‘Circling the Rabbit Hole’ podcast, hosted by Dr. Claire, features guests Muthoni and Rix, for candid conversation on an increasingly popular yet still controversial lifestyle choice ie. opting to be child-free.
Today’s discussion aims to destigmatise this choice, moving away from negative connotations associated with "childlessness" or “being barren”. We contextualise this lifestyle choice to our society and culture here in Kenya, as Muthoni and Rix share their personal experiences, highlighting the combative reactions women often face compared to men when making this choice.
Muthoni, having never envisioned herself as a parent, talks us through how she arrived at her decision and what action she has taken to ensure she lives a life true to herself, her beliefs and passions. At the same time, Rix reveals that his decision stemmed from just how much "parenting" he had already done for his family and himself. His realisation that parenthood is a demanding vocation very few are truly prepared for.
The episode also explores the medical aspects of contraception, with Muthoni recounting being denied a tubal ligation at age 23 due to her age and societal expectations that denied her body autonomy, while Rix discusses the cultural resistance men face regarding the vasectomy procedure, despite it being a simpler procedure for couples looking to prevent pregnancy, having completed their family size. The conversation concludes with advice to "choose your hard" and not to have a child for someone else, emphasising that the decision should be a personal and well-reasoned one.

Today we share an episode shot in front of our first Live audience at our ‘Myths from Below Yonder’ event. I’m joined by a panel of amazing experts for a holistic discussion on Menopause and Andropause, set in our African context.
Menopause is currently a hot topic globally, more-so as many Millenials enter this season of transition in their lives. We are quickly realising just how little those who went through it before us actually understood or were able to share with us. In addition, and with the aim of inclusion, we also take a deep dive into Andropause, often loosely referred to as “the male menopause”.
We delve into hormones and their effect on the signs and symptoms you may be experiencing; into nutrition and fitness, specifically the important role of strength training during this challenging time, and finally, everyone’s favourite segment; plastics and aesthetic surgery. We discuss everything you need to know about procedures especially relevant to this age group, What is available locally and how to best and safely find your most suitable option and providers.

Today, a woman is killed every 18 hours in Kenya, with most reported cases being a murder committed by someone she knows, lives with and loves. Yet in Kenya, Femicide is not recognised as a crime and more often than not, perpetrators of sexual, gender based violence (SGBV) and intimate partner violence get away with their crimes, despite being known to their victims and in their communities.
These statistics are grim and sadly not unique to Kenya. Femicide is an increasingly worsening issue globally. The question is, why do we remain silent? Why are we not doing more to protect our girls and women?
Today, the brilliant trio of @boxpodpodcast hosts join me for a thought-provoking conversation as we explore the nuances that seem to influence our current culture and attitude towards SGBV. We also discuss possible first steps we should consider taking to effectively change the narrative and address the crisis.

In today’s episode of Circling The Rabbit Hole Podcast, we revisit a crucial topic: Youth and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) – but with a fresh perspective. Do teens and young adults have the right access to accurate information about their sexual health and reproductive rights? If so, what can we do to ensure they do? And how do we protect them from the dangers of misinformation in an era where digital platforms are flooded with unreliable content? To answer these pressing questions, I am joined by two extraordinary women who are at the forefront of advocating for SRHR. Lucy Minayo, co-CEO of Amplify Girls, and Judy Amina, Executive Director of SRHR Alliance, bring their wealth of knowledge, passion, and experience working to advance SRHR across diverse communities. Together, we examine the pressing need to promote, protect, and advance the SRHR of adolescent girls, boys, young people, and marginalized groups. As Judy aptly puts it: “These conversations need to start at the household level and then expand to the national level. This is the only way we can begin to see real change.”Judy Amina is a young Kenyan woman passionate about the Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of young people, women and marginalized groups. She has been pivotal in steering SRHR projects targeting the youth, women, and vulnerable populations in Kenya for close to 10 years. In today’s climate, mental health conversations are becoming more and more common. However, there is still one aspect that is still often overlooked — men’s mental health and wellness. Society still expects men to remain stoic, despite relentless life, relationship and financial pressures. A significant stigma still persists often shaming any form of vulnerability, which pushes many men into emotional isolation, addiction, abusive tendancies and silence. This lack of acknowledgment of their struggles not only harms men but also often leads to devastating effects in their families and communities. On this episode of Circling The Rabbit Hole, I am joined by Kelvin Mutiso, Co-Founder/CEO of OYE Kenya, and Chris Lyimo, a counseling psychologist and interventionist, to confront the systemic neglect of men’s mental health. While Kelvin discusses how financial instability and toxic masculinity can affect men’s emotional well-being, Chris offers a psychological perspective on how unspoken trauma and societal pressure exacerbate addiction and significant mental illnesses. Together, we examine how addressing men’s mental health is not only crucial for their survival but also vital in creating safer and healthier communities—an issue tied directly to the Femicide Marches we had last year in Kenya due to the ongoing Femicide pandemic. As Kelvin says in the episode, “It is time we examine what the original sin was; to ask ourselves: when was the moment we missed the boat in addressing these issues and now the boat is far out in the sea and we are struggling to catch it?” Join us as we unpack the stigma and explore possible solutions. Chris Lyimo is a believer that everyone deserves a second chance. He advocates for us to think through and communicate issues affecting people and aids in providing the clarity necessary for their transformation process, e.g., addiction treatment and recovery, mending relationships. As the lead therapist and interventionist at Creative Insights, Chris is inspired by the possibility of exploring who people truly are, at their core. For context, Kenya still criminalizes same-sex relationships under the penal code sections 162, 163 and 165. In 2023, the family protection bill introduced by MP George Kaluma attempted to penalize homosexuality further with the death penalty. This bill was however ruled against on 12.09.2023. The law as it stands leads to various violations against the human rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, including hindering their access to comprehensive SRHR and Mental health services in the country.
Today, my guest Kivenzi Muange and I address the unique issues that the LGBTQ+ community in Kenya faces, specifically when it comes to SRHR, mental health wellness, intimate partner violence, and access to tailored healthcare, in addition to the weight of social stigma.
In our conversation, we share invaluable insights into initiatives driving change, including policy advocacy, efforts to train healthcare providers on inclusive care, and creating community support networks that empower individuals and foster resilience. We also unpack the urgent need for systemic reforms and cultural shifts to ensure equitable access to healthcare and the upholding of basic human rights for LGBTQ+ Kenyans.
This episode is a call to action for allyship and a deeper understanding of the ongoing fight for equality. Make sure to watch/listen and join the conversation.

In loving memory of Dr. Jean Kagia (1948–2024)
In today’s episode, we honour the life and work of Dr. Jean Kagia, a well respected Obstetrician/Gynaecologist and dedicated CEO of the Protecting Life Movement Trust and Kiota Rescue Centre, who passed away on July 5th, 2024.
In her final interview, Dr. Kagia tackled one of Kenya’s most difficult topics: the incest crisis. Listen in as she delves into the profound impact of incest and sexual abuse within families as the hidden cause of many unintended pregnancies in young girls and teens.
This conversation offers a raw exploration of how sexual abuse, often hidden by family members, contributes to a vicious cycle of trauma, secrecy, and crisis with a devastating impact on our children, both girls and boys. Dr. Kagia shares insights into preventive measures that communities, families, and policymakers can take to address and reduce the incidences of incest and sexual abuse within the family unit.
Dr. Jean Wamaitha Kagia was a distinguished Obstetrician and Gynaecologist based in Nairobi, Kenya. She dedicated her career to maternal health, focusing on issues surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. She was known not only for her medical contributions but also for her strong voice in Kenya’s Protecting Life Movement, where she actively worked to support young girls who chose to carry unintended pregnancies to term, by creating support systems they could thrive within. Her focus extended to tackling the root causes of pregnancy crises in Kenya, including sexual abuse and incest, topics she addressed with courage and clarity.
We extend our sincere condolences to her husband, children, family, friends, colleagues & all those who were impacted by her love, wisdom & inspiring work. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Welcome to a new episode of Circling The Rabbit Hole Podcast. Joining me today is Ashley Muteti, founder of the Zuri Nzilani Foundation, which she established after the heartbreaking loss of her first daughter, Zuri, to complications following a late diagnosis of severe pre-eclampsia.
For those unfamiliar, pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure that typically occurs in the second half of pregnancy. If left untreated, it can lead to life-threatening complications for both mother and baby, making it one of the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality worldwide.
In our conversation, we highlight why every expectant parent, caregiver, and healthcare professional needs to be informed about pre-eclampsia. We’ll dive into the challenges of diagnosing and managing the condition, the importance of regular prenatal care, and how Ashley’s foundation is helping women navigate this dangerous pregnancy complication.
Ashely Muteti is a Communication and Public relations specialist in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2019, Ashely founded Zuri Nzilani Foundation, a non-governmental organization focused on maternal health advocacy in Africa, a mission that she is very passionate about, having twice survived pre-eclampsia herself. Through the Zuri Nzilani Foundation, Ashley is on a mission to raise awareness about hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, and to provide social support, training, advocacy, and research on this dangerous pregnancy-related condition.
Due to her advocacy efforts in Kenya, she was named Top 100 Kenyans in 2022 and is a nominee of the 2023 East Africa Youth Awards for championing Maternal and Child Health in East Africa. Through the foundation, Ashely hopes to transform maternal health in Africa through sustained sensitization and engagement.

On today’s episode of ‘Circling The Rabbit Hole’ podcast, we speak about a chronic and often very painful condition that has impacted the lives of many women — Endometriosis. According to statistics, Endometriosis affects roughly 1 in 10 women globally, and in Kenya, it's estimated that over 4 million women suffer from this debilitating condition. Yet, many go undiagnosed for years due to a lack of awareness and limited access to proper healthcare.
Today I am honored to sit down with the remarkable Elsie Wandera, a true warrior in every sense of the word, to talk about endometriosis. As the founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of Kenya and someone who has battled endometriosis herself—enduring multiple surgeries and fertility challenges—Elsie’s resilience and dedication to raising awareness for the condition is nothing short of inspiring.
Today we discuss how women can better cope with endometriosis, the emotional and physical toll it takes, and how to manage its debilitating symptoms. We also dive into the stigma surrounding motherhood for women with endometriosis, discussing the judgement and societal pressure that often comes with fertility struggles. Furthermore, we highlight the crucial need for health workers to be more informed and aware of endometriosis, so they can offer timely diagnosis and better healthcare support for women suffering from this condition.
Join us as we unpack the important topics surrounding this condition and learn how we can break the silence, improve healthcare, and support women living with endometriosis.
Elsie Wandera is a dynamic Kenyan social entrepreneur and women's health advocate, with a strong focus on endometriosis. She is the Founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of Kenya and a member of the World Endometriosis Organisations Steering Committee.
She has received numerous accolades for her advocacy work for women with endometriosis, including the Kotex #SheCanAwards Honoree in 2021 and the 2018 Jacob's Well Award. She also received the Heroes with Impact Award from Unilever in London, UK for embodying the company's values and demonstrating passion and purpose in and out of the workplace. She is also a member of the World Endometriosis Society.

Welcome to another episode of ‘Circling The Rabbit Hole’ podcast. Today, we endeavor to shed light on a critical, often overlooked issue and as many of you can probably attest, a conversation not had often enough here in Africa; Childhood Cancers.
September being Childhood Cancer Awareness month, I am joined by a very special guest, 16-year-old ovarian cancer survivor, Lauren Neema, who has recently been confirmed as cancer-free! 🎉 She bravely comes on to share her journey battling ovarian cancer diagnosed at age 15. She shares a bit about the challenges of adjusting to life after such a game-changer of a diagnosis and how she found strength in her love for art and the guitar.
Dr. Rose Munge, the paediatric oncologist who treated Lauren, also joins us in the discussion. Together, we highlight the need for increased awareness of teenage and childhood cancers, the importance of early diagnosis, treatment and the need for better support systems for young people diagnosed with cancer.
While most awareness campaigns focus on adult cancers, Lauren's story reminds us that cancer doesn't discriminate by age, and young people like her are also in this fight. In this conversation, we offer valuable insights into the specific medical and emotional needs of young patients, emphasising how critical it is to broaden the conversation beyond adult cancers.
Join us in raising awareness for these young fighters, and learn more about how you can support the cause.
Lauren Neema is a passionate and self-driven Form Three student with a love for music and the arts. With her guitar in hand, she expresses her creativity through melodies and lyrics, often finding inspiration in her everyday experiences. Lauren has a natural talent for drawing, creating vibrant pieces that reflect her unique perspective on the world around her. She balances her academic pursuits with her artistic passions, always striving to grow and learn. Whether strumming her guitar or sketching her next masterpiece, Lauren embodies dedication and creativity, inspiring those around her.
She was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer stage one in December 2023 and started chemotherapy in January 2024. She underwent an aggressive regimen of 6 cycles of chemo each lasting 21 days and concluded her treatment in May, 2024. She is now embarking on her journey to full recovery and wellness with lots of positivity and is grateful to the doctors, nurses, family and Almighty God for how far she has come.
Dr. Rose Munge is a paediatrician and renowned paediatric haematologist and oncologist at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral abd Research Hospital.
