"3:10 to Yuma" & "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" w/ Daniel King and Quinn Shields
Ah, to be an outlaw in the wild west. Got nothing but a crew to back you up. Like really nothing. As one my favorite criminals Neil McCauley once said, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." They were living this life. These guys slept outside and had like one outfit. No wonder they were desperate for some cash. Crazy that capitalism was what got them all in the end. I'm pretty sure that's the main point of both of these films, "The Assassinations of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (written and directed by Andrew Dominik) as well as James' Mangolds remake of the 1957 classic, "3:10 to Yuma". And Heat too (not Heat 2) for that matter.   Joining the conversation this week are Daniel King (@dkingbooksla), author of "An Eye for Killing" and "Table Scraps" as well as Quinn Shields (@quinnshields) of The Fools Journey Podcast (@thefoolsjourneypod).   (0:00) Intro (7:15) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (1:00:38) 3:10 to Yuma

”Halloween” and ”Funny Games” with PJ Volk and Ben Hrycak
Happy Halloween! We're celebrating 2007 with Rob Zombie's reimagining of John Carpenter's classic, Halloween. And if you thought Zombie's take was disturbing, just wait until you see Michael Haneke's remake of his own 1997 film Funny Games.Master of horror PJ Volk (@pjmas) helps us look into the eyes of a psychopath, while Ben Hrycak (@goodfellaben) of The Fools Journey Podcast reminds us that if your dad is badass enough, you can make it through any horror film. ”Sunshine” and ”The Mist” with the Critericast (AJ Bouland and Gabe Pardekooper)
"DAAH Mist." (Man it's getting hard to write these.) This week we're diving into a science-fiction/horror double feature: Danny Boyle's box office bomb about bombing the sun, Sunshine, and The Mist, another Steven King adaptation by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile). Taking a step away from covering the prestigious catalogue of art house films are the hosts of CriteriCast (@critericast)! Humanity's last hope AJ Bouland (@ehjaybooland) and creature from The Mist Gabe Pardekooper (@gpardekooper) help Louis brave the unknown horrors of this double feature... ”Mr. Brooks” and ”Believers” with Averick Faeth
Averick Faeth (@aveorrick) crashes the podcast with a direct-to-video movie he dug up at a gas station DVD Bargain Bin called "Believers", which is about an end of the world death cult. Directed by Daniel Myrack of The Blair Witch Project fame. Louis managed to dig up another film that feels like it doesn't exist called "Mr. Brooks" staring Kevin Costner as a serial killer, William Hurt as Costner's alter ego, Dane Cook as a wannabe aspiring serial killer, and Demi Moore as the homicide detective worth $60M trying to take it all down while going through a divorce. It's as baffling as it sounds.   Follow Cinema Span on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd. The video edition of this episode is available on our YouTube channel.

”Hot Fuzz” and ”Hot Rod” with Robyn Beck and Sam Pinnelas
Summer may be over, but we're bringing the heat!! It's a hot damn double. And damn do we have some hotties to chill out with on this episode. Sam Pinnelas (@pinnelas), producer at Too Lemon Productions (@toolemonofficial) joins the podcast with writer and professional nerd Robyn Beck (@robeanburrito19) to talk about two of the hottest comedies to come out of the USA & the UK in 2007.  Did you know that there were Americans in test screenings who were confused by the title "Hot Fuzz" because they mistakenly thought 'Fuzz' was a British term? Even Criss Angel knew that one...   Intro (0:00) Hot Fuzz (1:28) Hot Rod (47:17) Follow Cinema Span on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd. ”Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and ”Spider-Man 3” with Adelaide Bass, AJ Boulund, and Evan Ridpath
This episode we cover the end of two iconic 2000's blockbuster franchises, Spider-Man and The Pirates of the Carribbean. Both entries were "the black sheep" of their respective trilogies at the time, and yet they're probably better than we give them credit for. It just goes to show how low the bar really got with Pirates 4&5 as well as the Amazing Spider-Man and MCU reboots. Into the Spider-Verse slaps though. Joining the pod this week is filmmaker/musician Adelaide Bass (@adelaidetbass), host of CriteriCast (@Critericast) AJ Boulund (@ehjaybooland), and Pirate King Evan Ridpath (@evanridpath).    [Spider-Man 3 discussion begins at 48:10] Follow Cinema Span on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd. The video edition of this episode is available on our YouTube channel.   Ahoy! I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye, ye scallywag. Yarg. Now dig on this: The Night Your Father Died, I Cleaned His Wound. The Blade That Pierced His Body Came From His Glider. I Know You're Trying To Defend Your Father's Honor But There's No Question That He Died By His Own Hand. I Loved Your Father As I Have Loved You, Harry, As Your Friends Love You.

”Bratz” and ”Smiley Face” with Kat Phan
2023 may be the year of Gretta Gerwig's Barbie, but 2007 was all about Bratz! Real life Bratz doll Kat Phan (@Sugarbrushh) joins the podcast to break down what made the Bratz dolls so iconic. Then, real life stoner Louis talks about Smiley Face for a half hour without really saying anything of substance, which is probably what Anna Farris' character would do in the same circumstance. Happy 4/20 y'all! [Smiley Face discussion begins at 53:27] Follow Cinema Span on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd. The video edition of this episode is available on our YouTube channel.

”American Gangster” and ”The Great Debaters” with Jaylon Lee
2007 was a good year for Denzel Washington, starring in Ridley Scott's "American Gangster" as well as directing his second film "The Great Debaters". YouTuber Jaylon Lee (@jayyxvii.x on Instagram) from The Loft (@theloft818 on YouTube) joins Louis to discuss these films and the larger historical picture at play. Jay's dogs are hanging out too in the video version, it's a good time. I hope that you never find yourself bound to a chair as Frank Lucas douses you with gasoline, sets you aflame, and shoots you multiple times point blank. May we all beat the official Harvard account in debates on Twitter instead. [The Great Debaters discussion begins at 1:05:50] You can follow Cinema Span on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd! ”Are We Done Yet?” and ”Norbit” with Jaylon Lee
Look, we went through this so you didn't have to. Although, this double was making me wonder if we should reconceptualize the show... YouTuber Jaylon Lee (@jayyxvii.x on Instagram) from The Loft (@theloft818 on YouTube) joins Louis in the studio to talk about Ice Cube's follow up to Are We There Yet?- Are We Done Yet?, which is somehow based off of a 40's comedy called Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House and it's 80's remake, The Money Pit. And I guess we eventually get around to talking about Eddie Murphey's Norbit... [Norbit discussion begins at 52:31] You can follow Cinema Span on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd!
