#35. Exploring Tasmania

When planning to travel we all want to see it all, but we don’t all have unlimited time and money to do so.  When it comes to Tasmania, there is so much to see and do, but you can do it in a short period of time.

In this weeks episode I dive into our 2 month trip in Tassie and talk about three of our stand out places.  Tasmania is the smallest state of Australia. It is made up of 19 national parks (which cover approximately 40% of the whole state), over 1500 beaches, 160 wine producers, little towns and a lot of wildlife.

We have done close to 3000kms while being here and still haven’t seen it all.

Tune in to hear where I recommend for your trip to Tasmania.

I also offer up some thoughts about connecting with others and being present.

If you would like to get notified as soon as the Chasin Travels episodes are released make sure you hit ‘subscribe’ or ‘follow’.  If you haven’t reviewed this podcast I would love to know what you thought and this helps me grow and share more about our big, wide, beautiful world.

Chris is the founder of ‘Travel Fit’, host of the ‘In progress’ podcast and facilitator of retreats on the sunny shores of Queensland.

He is on a mission to host global events that support people to live their best lives by getting them to connect to their mind, body and soul.

#23. A Visit To The Philippines

This episode I  take you on a tour to the Philippines.

I relive the Chasin Philippines tour, a three week conservation adventure where we visited Manila, El Nido, Bohol, Panglao and Siargao.

The Philippines is home to more than 7000 islands depending on the tide. The land mass of all these islands is around 300,000km2.  The main language spoken here is Tagalog, but there are over 100 different dialects spoken there.  The beaches are fantastic, the jungles untouched, the waters crystal clear, the food tasty and the people incredible!

The key to have a trip like no other? Connect with the locals and the people that have spent plenty of time there. They know the spots! Or join me on the next Chasin Philippines Tour.

#19. Recycling and Waste Banks in Thailand

Cap - Recycling and Waste Banks in Thailand

Cap headed over to Thailand for a filming project in 2017. She ended up on Koh Phangan filming Muay Thai, met her boyfriend then decided to move permanently to Thailand.  Cap landed herself a position with the Jan and Oscar Foundation.

Jan and Oscar Foundation was founded in 2005, by a Swiss mother who lost her two children in the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004. The foundation was started to help the disadvantaged children who were affected by this devastating event.  Sometime later, they learnt about the Moken People (Episode #8) in the Ranong district.  On a trip out to the islands, they noticed the plastic pollution and in 2019 they started the Ranong Recycle center and social enterprise.

They are the first certified collectors of ocean bound plastic (collected 50km from the coast) and they buy the plastic from the locals at a fair market price.  This project has been able to collect hundreds of tonnes of plastic from the ocean and has sold it to their partners to be recycled into other items.  Not only this, the Jan and Oscar foundation has been able to support local communities, provide jobs for people and to educate the area on the effects of ocean pollution.

#17. Creating Young Change Makers

A fellow Aussie joins me on this episode. She has been making waves for years now, from working over in Vietnam, India and Kenya on giveback projects, to founding her own passion project, Sonder Youth. She is a woman on a mission to empower people to follow their dreams and to be the change makers that they were born to be!

We talk about how Av was inspired by her travels to live simply and go on to build a tiny house; how she lived in Vietnam and was able to connect on another level with a community there; and what India is like when you rely on a Lonely Planet guide book.

Having always been obsessed with travel, she took what savings she had and backpacked for several months.  All this travel allowed Av to think bigger than just her little bubble and it has led to her doing incredible, inspiring things.

The word ‘Sonder’ was inspired by a text she got from someone who she met while travelling and it really hit home for her.  From that, it sparked a desire to build changemakers from as young as possible through international travel and local education programs.  Sonder Youth provides a platform for people to step up and do that thing that they’re passionate about and really look at the potential they have for impact (26:34).

Tune in to hear all about these projects and how she got to where she is now.

Some take home words from the show

“India is the most vibrant piece of humanity I have come across. There is so much light and flavour and colour. It's just so welcoming. It smacks you in the face at first, but then it holds onto you and never lets go”

“ I have always found that seeing people in their own environment, living in completely different circumstances to my own, whether it is living situation or family situation or how the community operates, it made me want to live differently to the way we grow up here… or at least know that there are other options.”

“People who see something wrong and do something about it. I was always so inspired by these people who would step up and do the thing…. I wanted to ignite that passion and give people a platform to do that thing, surrounded by a community of change makers.”
