What happens when a sausage company had to do damage control? We get to the meat of the issue of Public Relations and how it overlaps the business of Advertising and Marketing. We also touch on race in movies, such as Richard Pryor in the Toy and Dan Aykroyd in "blackface" in Trading Places. I put on my worst Jamaican accent and Jarrod waxes philosophically about the political situation in the country. We're not political, but it does impact on working in the industry. All this and working in Woodbrook in MadAvenue in this week's episode of But That's Not Important Right Now.
In the essay "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young" by Mary Schmich, immortalised in the the Baz Luhrmann song "Wear Sunscreen" She likens Advice as ". . . a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past From the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts And recycling it for more than it's worth." Well our advice to writers and admen and producers of content is, go easy on the Nostalgia-baiting! Using Nostalgia as a sales technique becomes old very quickly. Do you remember "Green Sands"? Sure, where is it now? All this and more, including 100 years of Crix and 100 years of Angostura Aromatic Bitters in this week's episode of But That's Not Important Right Now. A Podcast on Advertising!

I'm suffering from the Non-Rona flu and Jarrod wasn't feeling like showing his radio face, so this episode we talk a little bit more about working the advertising industry and what happens when you get older. It's a follow on from our last episode as we read some of the comments that you, our loyal listeners have left on YouTube and various other places. In between, my roommate for the evening, my son Devan, chimes in with some sage younger person advice for us old fogeys. It's a short episode, but we have some fun with meds and stories from the world of ads. Thanks for listening and if you like it give it a share and like and all of those lovely things and help support us.

We're back from hiatus and we're discussing stuff: "Heady Days" was published in June of 2022 and is a laundry list of Patrick Johnstone's (former MD of Publicis Caribbean) achievements as an Ad Man. Form his beginnings in the late 1960's to his creation of the agency now known as Publicis, Patrick talks about the history of advertising in T&T. Come listen as we don't really spoil the book (I don't think we actually can) but we do try to discuss the learnings. We are joined by the always incomparable QD Ross. Is 'Heady Days" worth the paper it's printed on? Is it a valuable insight into the ad industry, a seminal work on the development of marketing and communications in the Caribbean? Listen and find out! But That's Not Important Right Now! A Podcast on Advertising.
You can buy a copy of "Heady Days" on Amazon.

In this our final episode of Season 3 we talk the idea of the white faced minstrels we find in Trinidad offices. The problems you find working in toxic environments and some advice. While we drink our coffee and water we also wax philosophical about the good times we had working at The Agency. RIP Keith Francois, Media Manager at The Agency back in the day, and a summary of the best episodes in the last year that BTNIRN has been around. This was filmed live at Rituals Maraval and streamed on Facebook. Shoutout to all our listeners, You can also view our ugly mugs here on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_n4JH8bh-w8. This episode dedicated to the memory of Keith Francois.
Jarrod Butts and Ian Reid, former Advertising employees, talk about construction, building and advertising. The kind of radio ads that could have been great but ended up being poo. The old tag line of a hardware "Know how yuh finishing" starts off the conversation in this episode. The use of celebs to hawk brands, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lebron and the testicles of Devastator. We also discuss why car radios still have the AM band, yes it's very interesting. This and more in a very late edition of But That's Not Important Right Now!
This is the penultimate episode. We will be taking a break till September and will be doing a live show on Wednesday this week. So come join us! https://fb.me/e/1qBA5PA6N This will be uploaded to the podcast the week following, so if you miss it you can come back and listen! We love all our subscribers! After a tumultuous couple of weeks with industry shock after industry shock we decided to just talk about . . . nothing. Well not nothing, Jarrod talks about his life as a radio man and we jump back into what is brand appropriateness especially during Pride Month. As usual thanks to all who listen and gave us feedback. Shout out to @audiomite for listening to us. Thanks. Also shout out to Philip Alexis on Instagram @phlex_art who's been doing some cool animated stuff in Photoshop. Yes, you heard it, PHOTOSHOP. The joke starts with "A Chef, a Bottle of Seasoning and an Airplane walk into a bar. . . " The punchline? Its Tactless. In this episode we're re-joined by our friend Quincy Ross who regaled us with his story of the Caribbean Airlines rebrand way back in the day and the offhand, politically charged comment by the then Prime Minister. But starting the show, is the mysterious case of the "Pork is Life" comment by Chef Jason Peru and all the noise that came with it. Then as if we didn't have enough on our plate NESTLÉ hit us a two for one with their Indian Arrival Day Social Media post, food filled Tabla drums. Oh boy. . . and of course the Johnny Depp trial and all the S**t associated with it. This is going to be a fun and insightful almost philosophical episode! Like share and subscribe! Happy Indian Arrival Day! Duane Boodasingh of TriniTuner.com, the Caribbean's longest and largest online forum, joins us in this episode to talk tech. How a site for car enthusiasts led the way in showing how digital advertising has changed and developed over the years and why we still have a lot to learn. Started in the late 90's Duane's TriniTuner forums has become the go to place for car enthusiasts for over two decades. But it's not just cars, Duane and his team have created a community of people who exchange ideas, discuss issues and unlike Facebook and Twitter show how a little community can do big things without resorting to censorship and an algorithm. The forum dynamic is still alive and well in the age of microblogging and status updates. We're also joined by regular guest Quincy Ross and we talk the agency business in the age of digital. In this episode we talk about how important it is to set boundaries with people, especially clients. If you're working for an ad agency as a freelancer or even individual clients you make it known upfront that you control the narrative, you set the rules. "No. Money Down!" is the mantra. Quincy Ross joins us this week to talk about his challenges with clients who renege on their contracts. We also talk various industry news and then segue into the recent "influencer marketing" controversy and the launch of the new Breeze product at the "swanky Brix Hotel Penthouse." What really IS an "influencer" Quincy's here to help break it down. This is an episode loaded with interesting stories and advice. We tried an experiment and we apologise upfront for the terrible quality. It's even more unappealing than before! But if you can actually catch the recorded live show here: https://www.facebook.com/ReidDesigns/videos/761158335046316 and see our two beautiful craggy faces. Of course we don't have a proper mic cause well, it costs money! But we didn't let that stop us for having a fun time. Its amazing the wonderful people of Starbucks didn't throw us out! 🤣 In this episode we chatted about the Flow account going back to The Agency and what happened the last time it was there. Also we give shoutouts to our listeners and read some comments. We also meander through the life that is working in advertising. So thanks for listening to this horrible podcast! We're working on a better live show. But if you'd like to send us money https://bit.ly/payInow we would be greatly appreciated, daddy needs a new pair of everything, including a Good microphone. But That's Not Important Right Now!
There are consequences. Dire ones. We, Jarrod and I bring on our friend from AgencyLand Kimberly to reminisce about campaigns gone by. Kimberly spills the beans about hearing about Ian even before she joined The Agency, this should be fun to hear! Jarrod talks about the Social Media Post that went viral for all the wrong reasons and we discuss more about the personalities we find in Your Agency. Who are the people in your agency? But That's Not Important Right Now! A podcast on advertising.

What does this mean? Well in this Episode we are joined by our illustrious partner in advertising mayhem, Quincy Ross to talk once again about advertising of yesteryear. Yesteryear sounds so far, but it wasn't. Only a few years ago we were looking forward to the latest Absolut Vodka press execution and why its seems less relevant today in the age of digital advertising. We critique Kendall Oil's social media offerings and Google ads. We read some comments from you the fans, also gatekeeping by the the kids when buying cereal and the prizes you got. Anyone remember Zero Heroes?! We do! and Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. Can an ad be an NFT? Who knows? All this and more in this here episode 15 of But That's Not Important Right Now! A podcast on advertising in the Caribbean.

Our copywriter friend Randall joins us to continue to build our fictitious agency, Dungeon Master DnD style! It is the ultimate goal of this podcast to publish in book form, our experiences working in advertising in the Caribbean. It's been one year since we started this podcast and we thank all our followers and listeners. I know we can be "unappealing" and maybe a bit boring, but we thank you for sticking with us! So who are the people in The Agency. After our last episode we solidify some of the individuals you find in a typical Caribbean Ad Agency. From the absentee owner, the Paranoid CD and the permanently happy and ultra positive Account Executive. It's going to be a blast. So if you're stuck in traffic, or just listening to us with your morning coffee then we hope you have a good day. But That's Not Important Right Now! Subscribe, like, share and all that stuff.
