#92 – Why Civilizations Collapse
What actually caused the downfall of the great civilizations this Earth has seen? In 1934, social anthropologist J.D. Unwin made a vigorous scientific attempt to answer this question.  He studied 86 different cultures, including the Roman, Greek, Sumerian, Arabian, Babylonian and Anglo-Saxon civilizations. He had expected to find that monogamy had no real influence on these cultures. But by the end of his study, Unwin came to a much different conclusion. He found that throughout history in nearly every civilization, sexual license and the decline of monogamy lead to irreversible societal collapse within just three generations. Tune in to hear us break down his findings and explain them through the lens of the yoga wisdom. Highlights: (0:59) Why make decisions in life that are against the trend? Because it’s better for you. (8:59) Summarizing Unwin’s study; when sexual restraints disappear, so do rational thinking (22:45) Marriage is what holds the powerful force of lust at bay, but more and more people just want to be able to “lick the icing off the cake” and then move on (33:30) Balakhilya witnessed the sex and drugs revolution of the 60’s and saw the consequences of a “whatever feels good” mentality (46:10) The more knowledge we have, the better our choices will be—for the well-being of everyone Recorded on November 12, 2022. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#91 – Avoid Manipulation, See the Wolves
The truth is, we can’t stop being sheep. We are naturally inclined to follow a higher authority. So how can I navigate the terrain of spiritual life without being manipulated or used? How can I see the wolves for what they are, and how can I find a proper shepherd? Today we discuss the concept of “sheep” and “wolves” in both societal and spiritual contexts. We explore the natural human tendency to follow leaders and the risks that come with it. You’ll hear how according to the Vedas, a qualified spiritual guide is essential—but we are surrounded by deceptive leaders or “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. Manipulation occurs in politics, media, and even spiritual communities. And so we need to develop a sincere, cautious discernment rather than blind acceptance. True spiritual teachers never exploit, as they are genuinely fulfilled and act only out of care. And a genuine follower remains humble, always seeking guidance rather than striving for independence or superiority. Ultimately, what we need is to cultivate awareness, deepen our connection to the Supreme, and rely on authentic sources of wisdom and inner guidance to avoid being misled. Highlights: (1:02) “What the great man does, the common man follows” (11:39) Manipulation within spiritual communities (19:33) Behind the candy coated talks, there's really an agenda (27:04) Without a teacher, you can’t grow strong enough to resist being manipulated (36:50) We really can’t be independent (42:00) A true teacher doesn't teach a sectarian belief system, he teaches the Absolute Truth Recorded on May 23, 2022. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#90 – Go Beyond Positive Thinking
Is the glass half full, or half empty? The truth is, we won’t really be happy regardless of how we see it. Until and unless we start addressing our true needs, as the spiritual beings we are. We should start seeing life as it truly is—accepting both the good and the bad without dramatization. Today we dive deep into the realities of life and the spiritual journey ahead of us. You’ll hear a heartfelt story about a friend diagnosed with ALS, that shows the importance of spiritual growth over worldly pleasures. We discuss how people often rely on positive thinking or temporary fixes when facing hardships, while true resilience comes from a realistic approach. Highlights: (5:44) Balakhilya buys rose-colored glasses (15:15) Better laugh than cry - but there’s another option (23:04) Sometimes difficulty is just what we need (31:06) The world is designed to be imperfect (36:10) We need to develop a higher taste Recorded on December 12, 2022. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#89 – Jesus, the Prince of Peace
A compassionate heart, purified from greed and anger, naturally seeks to care for others and foster peace. As Jesus himself said, “The kingdom of God is within you”. Today we reflect on Jesus' teachings - particularly the concept of loving one's enemies. Jesus himself wasn’t a promoter of divisive labels, such as religion, but rather a representative of divine truth. We should remember that “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” With this we wish all our listeners a very Merry Christmas. We hope that you will always be able to learn, grow, and embody Jesus’ message of love for God and love for all other sentient beings. Highlights: (5:27) You are a spiritual, not a material, being (13:01) Love everyone, including enemies; respect freedom (31:43) Acceptance of a supreme authority is essential for peace (41:34) Transcendental intelligence requires knowledge and perspective (49:23) Santa Claus portrays religion as a fake fantasy (58:44) Merry Christmas, from Ruben and Balakhilya Recorded on December 12, 2022. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#88 – Simple Living, High Thinking
'For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?' (Mark 8:36) For spiritual wellness, we need to embrace simplicity. We need to consider what benefits the spirit soul. And this episode will hopefully inspire you to do just that. We discuss how moving through the modes of nature—ignorance, passion, and goodness—is much like climbing a ladder to reach higher states of thought and living. Balakhilya contrasts materialistic life, driven by false promises of satisfaction, with a simpler, spiritually focused life. Highlights: (5:35) Enlightening story about an ascetic who got entangled in material life (12:51) Getting stuck in the system through student loans (21:23) Be more in nature and implement a healthier diet (34:36) The pleasure of material life is always limited (45:44) We need to put ourselves in a conducive situation (53:47) What “higher thinking” really means Recorded on July 13, 2022. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#87 – Understanding Near-Death Experiences
In the Netflix docu-series Surviving Death, a ‘non-believer’ film-maker explores the possibility that consciousness continues beyond life as we know it. The documentary is intriguing and gives an important glimpse of the truth. But there are also a lot of misunderstandings, often based on speculation. In today’s episode we look closer at the real facts of death and dying, through the light of the Vedic teachings. We emphasize how one should have a practical approach toward spirituality, and not get caught up focusing on extraordinary experiences. And we stress the need for expert guidance from spiritual teachers. The discussion extends to karma, the subtle laws governing behaviour, and making conscious choices based on future consequences. Highlights: (2:47) How to bridge the gap between traditional science and spirituality (13:18) Attachments bring a person back from near-death experiences (19:18) Ghosts explained; even when we leave our gross physical body, we still have a subtle mental body (30:12) We are either controlled by love or by lust (41:15) The demigod Indra was once forced into a pig body, and refused to leave it (51:58) There is a real spiritual world; it’s not a fantasy Recorded on May 16, 2022. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#86 – Know Lord Chaitanya, Know God | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 16
Lord Chaitanya appeared 500 years ago in present India, and just like Jesus came to spread love for God. Today we discuss his life and teachings; an example of how we can all achieve spiritual perfection and happiness. You’ll hear us discuss the difficulties we face in the modern times of wide spread materialism and irreligion. For these times, Chaitanya made it clear that chanting God’s names, known as mantras in the yoga tradition, is the highest worship. We humbly ask all of our listeners to understand that the teachings of Chaitanya are applicable beyond any particular belief system. As we point out, religion simply means doing the will of the Supreme Lord. Because ultimately, it is the desire of Lord Chaitanya, and ourselves, that you come closer to the heart of Jesus. By knowing, loving, and serving God. With this episode, we conclude our 16-part series on ‘The Heart of Jesus’. We hope you have learnt something of value, and ask you to please write us with any questions or requests for further discussion/explanation. Highlights: (2:06) Who is Lord Chaitanya? #85 – The Persecution and Unwavering Faith of Jesus’ Apostles  | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 15
"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.” - Matthew 5:10-12 Today we delve into the stark contrast between the darkness and light in the world. We share the extraordinary accounts of Jesus’ apostles, who held on to their faith despite the most horrendous persecutions. And you’ll hear us differentiate between their genuine faith and its polar opposite of fanaticism. On that note, we didn’t make this episode to delve into the cruelty of how they were treated. Rather, we wanted to show how these apostles are the most wonderful examples of the power of faith, and the power of love. Examples that show how light always conquers darkness. Highlights: (5:53) Saul's conversion and writing of epistles (9:25) Apostles preached the message of Jesus despite Roman persecution (14:05) Why are genuine spiritual leaders an enemy of the rulers? (19:23) How a roman soldier guarding James was overcome by conviction and chose to be executed along with him (27:39) Jesus taught love, not salvationism (34:41) How we can also become strong from gradual development of spiritual love (51:24) A short story of how the most unlikely person can be the most interested Recorded on February 19, 2024. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#84 – Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 14
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” - Matthew 7:15 Today we delve into the essence of spiritual teachings, namely the importance of finding a true spiritual teacher. And how you practically can tell the real ones from the false ones. We stress the significance of assessing the genuineness of spiritual teachers based on their actions and teachings. We discuss the role of a spiritual master as a connection to the Supreme Person, and underscore the necessity of surrendering to a living spiritual teacher in the pursuit of spiritual growth. The bottom line is; if we don’t even try to find a spiritual teacher, we will be like a rudderless boat in the ocean of life. However, if we are not careful in this endeavour, we will not make it to a safe harbour. Highlights: (1:29) If God has a representative on earth today, would it be necessary for me to become his student? (9:22) Guidance of a true spiritual master is essential to understand the truth (15:33) Beware of the wolves, the false prophets, who come in sheep's clothing (20:07) Developing a spiritual interest makes you vulnerable to the wolves (28:30) "You shall know them by their fruit” (37:02) A spiritual seeker's sincerity reveals the truth (42:05) Wealth and spirituality: the goal isn't to enjoy this world, that's not what's going to make us happy Recorded on February 5, 2024. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#83 – The Bible on Reincarnation | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 13
Reincarnation (and thus, karma) was taught by Jesus as well as the early fathers of Christianity. When that concept was removed, several strange concepts were put into place - that are still being taught. For example, the eternal damnation that follows if you don’t take the one and only chance you have in this lifetime, the creation of the soul at the time of conception, and the idea that our suffering is not really due to our past actions - but due to the original sin committed by Adam and Eve. In this episode of Breaking Trail, we discuss the concepts of karma and reincarnation and their relationship with Christian teachings. We explore the idea that actions influence future outcomes, supporting this with Paul’s words from Galatians 6:7-9, "A man reaps what he sows," which serves as a cornerstone for understanding spiritual laws of cause and effect. We examine the historical decision by Justinian in 550 AD to remove reincarnation from Christian doctrine, a decision that introduced major theological shifts and inconsistencies. Life is really a continuous journey of spiritual evolution, which aligns with teachings from both the Vedas and early Christian texts.  Highlights: (8:16) How new concepts were introduced, such as original sin from Adam's disobedience in Garden of Eden (20:39) All religions teach we're children of God, so what about animals? (28:18) Reincarnation makes sense from different angles, given the contradiction of a loving God with a single lifetime chance (34:21) Blaming God for one’s suffering (40:35) Following the rules for spiritual life: obedience to a higher authority (51:15) Freedom from karma through spiritual service Recorded on January 22, 2024. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#82 – Spiritual Guidance from Unexpected Places | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 12
Today we delve into the Vedic story of Bilva Mangala, who was deeply attached to a prostitute by the name Chintamani. You’ll hear how, after a sudden turn of events, he accepted her as his spiritual master. We discuss the importance of redirecting ones materialistic passions towards spiritual pursuits, and touch upon the Vedic concept of intelligence for attaining a true perspective. Balakhilya also shares biblical narratives comparing Mary Magdalene and Chintamani. We discuss themes of mercy and redemption with references like Jesus' response to an accused adulteress, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her”. At the end, you’ll hear us respond to a listener’s question about chanting silently in the mind. This episode not only explores spiritual dimensions but also humanizes the path of spiritual growth, showing that enlightenment and help can emerge from the most unexpected sources. Highlights: (6:48) The story of the aristocratic priest Bilva Mangala and the prostitute Chintamani (12:39) Unexpected sources bring needed lessons and help. In the story of the man and the flood, he rejects help in search of a miracle. (20:43) Intelligence, according to the Vedas is the ability to put things in their proper perspective (23:36) Balakhilya responds to a question from listener: “I often find myself chanting in my mind when I'm riding the bus, out for a walk, or doing other quiet activities. I'm wondering if chanting silently to yourself has the same quality as chanting out loud?” Recorded on January 17, 2024. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#81 – Real Prayer is Meditation | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 11
What is real prayer, and what has that got to do with meditation? In fact, Jesus was meditating constantly; immersed in service to the Supreme Lord.  Today, we explore the concept of uncovering one’s love for the Supreme Lord and the process of cultivating it through meditation. We discuss the purpose of the religious processes; namely to enhance individuals' devotion to God, beyond sectarian differences. We also read from and expand upon Jesus’ famous ‘Lord's Prayer’: ‘Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’ (Matthew 6) Highlights: (1:50) Jesus was in constant meditation (7:40) A summary of Ashtanga, the eightfold mystic yoga process (18:49) Don’t pray as a show; but let it be your private communication with the Supreme Lord (28:06) I can’t make myself love God, but I can follow a process that uncovers that love (34:55) The Lord’s Prayer (44:13) If I don't forgive others, then I shouldn't expect God to forgive me Recorded on January 12, 2024. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

#80 – Should the State be Religious? | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 10
We see two extremes in today’s world. On one hand we see states ruled by some religious sect which are often characterised by violence, fanaticism, and intolerance.  On the other we have highly secular states that outwardly seem more peaceful, but where the erosion of the spiritual foundation means there is no longer any moral standard for the people to follow. In today’s talk you’ll hear how America was originally founded trying to go beyond these two extremes. Its founders were Christians who had broken off from the Church of England, wanting to establish a state based on spiritual principles but without fanaticism. Unfortunately, just recently, a new Speaker of the House was elected who believes that the Bible is the only way and the only truth. Not only has this nothing to do with real religion, but this fanatic spirit is the root cause of the societal divide and hatred we see today. Highlights: (1:14) About the new US Speaker of the House (9:18) How America was founded upon spiritual values (15:55) God is present in all His teachings, wherever they are to be found (24:54) Should we separate church and state? Description of the spiritual qualities.   (34:56) Real religion means love; not a particular denomination. There is no room for fanaticism. (42:27) Purport on Matthew 7:21-23: Why did Jesus denounce his so-called followers and said “I never knew you”? (50:19) Jesus always spoke the truth, without being afraid. #79 – Find Happiness in Submissive Service | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 9
Being a submissive servant of the Absolute Whole is really where the topmost happiness is at. And Jesus was a perfect example of that: "During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the One who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission" (Hebrews 5:7) Today we reflect on the profound significance of recognizing our true spiritual nature and serving a higher power. We clarify the misconceptions surrounding being a servant and the true essence of serving God in loving devotion. And that is all encapsulated in the life and teachings of Lord Jesus Christos. Highlights: (4:14) Jesus is not God, but His servant (15:59) Our function is to submissively serve (27:03) Being controlled by love is perfect (34:00) Jesus and John the Baptist (40:59) God’s love for us is unconditional (47:26) We like the bogey yogi idea of being God, because we are already trying to be God  Recorded on December 4, 2023. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

So what is God really like?  The Song of Solomon, for example, gives us a detailed description of His eyes, limbs, hair, and mouth. He is described as “altogether lovely”, and our “beloved and friend”. And if we accept His true, loving nature, we open ourselves up to a most wonderful connection and relationship. Highlights: (2:56) The “big thing”: God. His reality and nature is an Absolute Truth. (9:37) Biblical version of God’s appearance (Song of Salomon) (18:35) The fleeting beauty of this world vs the eternal beauty of the Supreme (24:48) Seeking God requires acceptance, love, and spiritual vision (30:31) Vedic version of God’s appearance (Brahma-Samhita) (35:03) The purpose of human life is to know and love God (40:32) The beauty and taste is present in God’s names Recorded on November 27, 2023. https://linktr.ee/breakingtrail

Phew, so we’re done with Christmas. If you think you’re spiritually advanced, go spend a week with your family. So why all the anger and hard feelings that many experience? And how come 66% of us feel lonely during Christmas?  As you’ll hear, there is a clear link between having a Merry Christmas and then having a Happy New Year. And that link is gratitude for the reason for the whole season, making Christmas a spiritual celebration instead of the peak of materialism. #76 – Cultivating Thankfulness | Heart of Jesus – Ep. 6
Being thankful is absolutely essential to be happy and experience spiritual growth. As it says in the Bible,  “Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” Psalms 107:8-9 So why is thankfulness so powerful? And if I’m not very thankful, how do I move towards that?  Today we discuss all about thankfulness. We reflect on the historical origins of Thanksgiving. We touch on the decline in societal appreciation for spiritual values and the exploitation of Native Americans. And you’ll learn about the interconnectedness of determination and thankfulness.  "Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving" Colossians 4:2 Highlights: (5:16) Native Americans taught early European settlers all possible survival skills like hunting, farming, etc. Thanksgiving started as a way to dedicate that to God. (9:48) Unpleasant life situations may help us move closer to the Lord (17:00) On karma and good deeds, “Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” Psalms 107:8-9 (22:58) Can no one come to God except by Jesus? (30:13) True thankfulness involves living according to God's teachings without misusing his love.
