I hope it has given you wonder and delight and reminded you that it is a beautiful world we live in (truly) - “we make idols of our concepts but wisdom is born of wonder.”

S8:8 EP115: Haley Stewart on Honoring Women's Experiences and Exploring The Catholic Imagination
On this podcast episode Katie and Haley discuss her two new books, focusing in particular on the Catholic Imagination (what exactly is that?), the sacramental reality of the world, and how reading a good story can change your life. We also dive a little bit into some of the more unfortunate online discussions re. women that have been circulating lately and how limiting they are. Instead of boxing ourselves into narrow images of womanhood and motherhood, Haley and Katie discuss the ways we can open our minds and hearts to the many beautiful ways of being a woman in the world. Highly encourage you to check out Haley’s books (they would make the perfect Christmas present!) and follow along with her work. Thanks again to Haley for coming on the podcast! ----- Haley Stewart is the Editor of Word on Fire Votive (an imprint for young readers) and is the host of The Votive Podcast. She is the award-winning author of seven books and the voice behind a popular Substack about faith, imagination, and literature. She lives in Florida with her four children, loves to lead pilgrimages, and never has enough bookshelves. Follow along with her work on Instagram, X, and Substack. S8:7 EP114: Creative Niches, The Joy of Research, + Celebrating Women's Lives: Interview with Ann Kennedy Smith
Ann Kennedy Smith takes seriously the old saying “behind every great man is a great woman,” bringing to light the complicated, illuminating, fascinating stories of women who made their mark and maybe haven’t gotten their due recognition. She brings us into the beauty, sadness, and joy of women’s lives and brings an important, compelling perspective. She is the writer behind the popular "Cambridge Ladies Dining Society" Substack and an independent scholar currently focusing on the lives of Victorian women (and beyond) at Cambridge.   Ann conducts herself with class, kindness, and genuine curiosity. She teaches us there are seasons of life for everything - for children and snatching moments of reading in between diaper changes, and for burying oneself in a dusty library at a romantic and beautiful university. On this episode, Katie and Ann were able to discuss some of the specific women she has profiled in her writing (including Katie's personal favorite, Sylvia Plath), how to balance different priorities in different seasons of life, and how to lean into your creative niche. S8:6 EP113: Not A Hillbilly Nihilist; A Hillbilly Thomist: Interview with Fr. Justin Bolger, O.P.
The Hillbilly Thomists are a band of friars of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). After playing music together for several years, they released their debut album (The Hillbilly Thomists) in 2017, which reached #3 on the Billboard bluegrass chart and mostly consisted in bluegrass standards and Americana favorites. Since then, the friars in the band have been doing what Dominican friars do: contemplating, studying, and preaching. Their most recent album, Marigold, released in July 2024. Katie was joined on the podcast by band member, Fr. Justin Bolger O.P. Fr. Justin hails from a family of seven and grew up in Maryland. He studied business at the University of Baltimore and earned a Masters in Philosophical Studies from Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He was also a singer/songwriter and recording artist with his sister Margaret. He is now the Associate Chaplain of the University for the Catholic Community at Brown University. Katie had such a great time talking to Fr. Justin. He is very gracious, funny, introspective, and clearly has a true love for the music he is playing. We hear about some of the background behind some favorite Thomist tunes and what it’s like for the brothers to all play together. We also discuss the many deep, compelling themes to be found in traditional music and how their band offers the culture a serious, but joyful, contemplation both of the Last Things and the True things. Thanks so much to Fr. Justin for coming on. Go check out their music, and see them on tour if you can! S8:5 EP112: Behind-the-Scenes at The Library of Congress
Katie recently visited The Library of Congress for the first time. Her guide was a dear friend, Joanna Colclough - a reference librarian specializing in newspapers and current periodicals at the Library of Congress. Tune into this podcast to hear some highlights from our tour, how you can become a researcher at the Library, learn what the Library actually does (I had no idea), how do you solve a problem like Maria (you’ll hear what I mean), and most all, celebrate the history and preservation of knowledge and the written word. I think you’ll be wonderfully encouraged! I want to thank Joanna for her incredible tour and I was so thrilled to see her truly in her element. The Library is lucky to have her!  --- Library of Congress Website: https://www.loc.gov/ How to Use the Reading Room (featuring Joanna pushing a cart! Hi!): https://www.loc.gov/research-centers/newspaper-and-current-periodical/about-this-research-center/using-the-reading-room/ Close ups of the contents of Lincoln’s pockets: https://www.loc.gov/resource/lprbscsm.scsm1049/?st=gallery   --- www.bornofwonder.com  www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack    ---- I do want to note that this episode is being released on September 11th, an anniversary I don’t think any of us should forget. And this Library, this episode, this visit, celebrates America at its finest - a flawed and imperfect history, but a history to be proud of nonetheless. And one worthy of preservation and respect. The American Dream includes The Library and Freedom of Speech and a deep love and respect for Knowledge. Let’s make sure to light a candle today in honor of the victims of the September 11th attacks and as a light of hope for our country and its’ ideals.

S8:4 EP111: The Analog Family - Interview with Katherine Johnson Martinko
“Analog” technology (things like clocks, dimmer switches, speakers, microphones, walkie-talkies, thermometers, etc.) are directly related to the function which they are performing. They are, in other words, simple. You talk into a microphone - you hear a sound. You look at a clock - it tells the time. You set an alarm - it rings. There’s not too much of a gap between experience and function. Digital technology, however, is incredibly complex. Smartphones, robotics, AI, cyber security systems, computers - all these things do not necessarily have direct relations between their uses and their functions. They are not analogous. Instead they are the result of a billion computations and numbers very few of us understand. Needless to say, the human brain works in analog. Our brains are wired to understand input-result-repeat. So what happens when we disrupt these natural analog ways of being, infusing our very centered, embodied selves with a confusion of digital data? Well, the results aren’t great. Not for kids, but not for adults either. Spikes in anxiety, lack of knowledge retention, memory issues, focus problems, the list goes on and on. Here to help us make sense of it all is someone I have admired for quite a long time here on Substack. In this podcast discussion we cover the practicalities of life as an analog family, what drives Katherine’s decisions around screen use and her family, how she’s raising ‘analog’ teens in digital world, and why parents need to get honest with themselves about their own screen use in order for there to be any real change for kids. Although all this talk of screens and the immense cost it has on our lives and our kids can be heavy, ultimately this is an incredibly positive discussion. When we give up our obsession with our phones, we’re free - to have experiences, to adventure through life as a family. This is about liberation, discovery, and reclaiming our lives. And special thanks to my daughter, Jojo, for her introduction to this podcast episode. ---- Katherine Johnson Martinko is a Canadian writer, author, and mother of three. She has worked as a journalist and editor for more than a decade. Her first book, "Childhood Unplugged: Practical Advice to Get Kids Off Screens and Find Balance," came out in July 2023. Shortlisted for the Foreword Indies 2023 Awards and with several translations in the works, it has been well-received by readers around the world who are desperate for a solution to their kids' screen time habits.   Martinko makes regular appearances on TV, radio stations, and podcasts across Canada and the U.S., as well as in-person presentations around the country, to talk about curbing digital device use. She writes about digital minimalism, parenting, travel, food, and more in her popular and fast-growing email newsletter, The Analog Family. She has a new weekly column in the Globe and Mail, Canada’s premier newspaper. -- Come to Ireland with me in October 2024!  www.bornofwonder.com  www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack

S8:3 EP110: Discernment, Creativity in Mothering, and the Still Small Voice: Interview with Kerri Christopher
What is the right thing to do?  This is a question that we're all confronted with at some point. Big decisions, little decisions, all can be incredibly difficult to discern what to do. And making choices that give us flexibility, time, and opportunities for creativity can make all the difference when it comes to happiness and pursuing the dreams we're meant to live out (especially for parents!). On the podcast today, Katie is joined by life consultant, occasional theology professor, and Substack writer Kerri Christopher to discuss expat life, mothering and creating, and discerning that 'still small voice.' S8:1 EP108: Madeleine L'Engle and the Power of Doubt
The cosmic battle for Good and Evil - the power of the individual - The Triumph of Love - the malleability of time - Our place in the Cosmos - Doubt - Hope - Art - These are the many topics of American author Madeleine L'Engle, most famously the author of A Wrinkle in Time. What does L'Engle teach us about faith and art and life? Learn why she defended Meg Murry/O'Keefe against women disappointed she chose motherhood/marriage over a career. Learn why it's important to doubt (and believe) like a child. Why do questions matter more than answers? And what about those astronauts who really did enter another pocket of Time?  Where did she get the idea for Mrs Which, Mrs Who, and Mrs Whatsit? S7:12 EP 104: The Economy of Love in Les Miserables with Maddie Dobrowski
Les Miserables is one of those profound stories that somehow encompasses the full depth of human experience. We have birth, death, falling in love, disappointment, justice, despair, young revolutionary zeal, forgiveness, and heavenly hope. From Valjean’s first encounter with the Bishop - who forgives him, undeservedly so - to Valjean’s own forgiveness of Javert (and Javert’s inability to accept his mercy) - this a story of love offered, received, and sometimes (tragically) rejected. It is a story that promises the often miserable human condition always has the hope of redemption, if not in this life, “somewhere beyond the barricade.” Today on the podcast I am joined by Maddie Dobrowski to discuss the tension between justice and mercy in Les Miserables, both in the musical and in the novel. We explore how it is only in the love between people that God’s redemption is allowed expression on Earth. Though this story ends in a death (and little justice Earth-side), it is a triumphant, hopeful ending. The hope of Heaven, and the Joy of Love given and received is enough. It has to be.   Maddie Dobrowski is a Catholic author, literature teacher, and student. She resides in Spokane, WA with her husband, Matt where she enjoys hiking, writing, reading, and gardening. She is currently studying for her MA in Thomistic philosophy and in her free time, she teaches classic literature and writes the Arts & Culture column for her diocese's quarterly magazine. Her first book, The Lord of the Rings and Catholicism, was published in December 2023 with En Route Books and Media. You can also find her writing on Substack (Love of Literature), where she shares essays on finding goodness, truth, and beauty in literature and art. Her two essays on Les Miserables: “The Economy of Love” “He is not Here. He Has Risen.”   *Special thank you to my husband, Chris, for his piano renditions of some of my favorite Les Mis melodies throughout this episode. --- www.bornofwonder.com  www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack Come to Ireland with me in October 2024!  --- Connect with Maddie online: https://maddiedobrowski.substack.com/  Instagram: @love_ofliterature   Read her book! S7:11 EP103: Finding Our Rhythm in the Liturgical Year with Kristin Haakenson
When you first encounter the liturgical year, it can be completely overwhelming. There is a saint's feast day every day! What season are we in again? Is it Eastertide? Ordinary Time? Who can keep track? Here to help us make sense of all this - and inspire us to live a rooted, embodied, seasonal, in-tune, life - is Kristin Haakenson, the writer and artist behind the sacred-seasonal liturgical living missive Hearthstone Fables. Kristin is a beautiful writer, rooted in story and history, and she beautifully weaves the rhythms of the agrarian year with the rhythms of the Church. She makes connections we may never have thought of (stay tuned for the discussion on the nativities of Christ and St. John the Baptist!) and brings a genuine joy to the liturgical year that makes the discovery of feast days and ancient traditions seem not overwhelming, but exciting, - delightful! A treasure trove to be explored.  On the podcast, Kristin discusses how to feel rooted, both in place and in faith, in a modern age opposed to both. Also discussions on how to find community, make the liturgical year a living reality, and how to celebrate with presence and tradition no matter whether you’re in an urban or agricultural setting.  An inspiring and convicting conversation to ground us in story, celebration, tradition, and art.  --- www.bornofwonder.com  www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack Come to Ireland with me in October 2024!  ---

S7:9 EP101: Dr. Larry Chapp on Dorothy Day and Re-Weirding Christianity
Today on the podcast Dr. Larry Chapp - former professor and current popular blogger, writer, theologian and founder of the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Farm - joins us to talk all about Dorothy Day. We discuss her radical politics, her orthodox faith, and what she has to offer a world so at odds with itself. Dorothy Day saw her politics, and her love for the poor, as completely inseparable from her Christian faith - it informed everything she did and everything she stood for. We speak about how to return to a truly 'lived' Christianity, even when it makes us a bit 'weird.' What is the role of money? How much should we even have materially speaking? Is there a deep tension with serving the poor and also being a responsible parent? All this plus a practical discussion on how we can help others and follow Christ's foundational commandment to always care for those in need.  --- www.bornofwonder.com  www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack Come to Ireland with me in October 2024!  ---   Dr. Chapp's blog - https://gaudiumetspes22.com/  Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Farm - https://dorothydaycwfarm.org/
