My name is Anita Powell. I'm a 50-year-old black female born in the UK I am suffering from the symptoms of perimenopause. A few years ago, I noticed that my body was responding different to how it used to be. Conversations with my peers and they too were noticing changes. I felt my overall health was deteriorating. As a 40 something year old woman I never really explored the topic of my health; I just lived it but not optimised on my health. After research I realised that I need to rethink my behaviour and take care of me.
Within the podcast I will be discussing the Menopause, Midlife, and Beyond, looking at life from my perceptive, a black female, exploring health and lives of women.

🎙️ Episode Title:
PauseLive, GLP-1 and Protecting Your Peace
💬 Episode Description:
In this episode, host Anita Powell reflects on a year of growth, balance, and reclaiming her power — from attending the inspiring PauseLive menopause event to marking her one-year anniversary on Mounjaro (a GLP-1 injection).
Anita opens up about her real experience with GLP-1 — how it helped her lose nearly four stone, reverse pre-diabetes, improve her sleep and energy, and find a new sense of control over her health during menopause. She also keeps it real about the side effects, hydration, fibre, and the importance of holistic self-care.
This honest, relatable conversation explores:
✨ How menopause awareness has evolved — and why representation matters
💉 What GLP-1 medications do, and how they can support hormonal balance in midlife
👩🏾🤝👩🏽 The joy and healing power of friendship and “finding your village”
🕰️ And a soulful reminder that “spare time isn’t spare — it’s your time.”
An empowering and heart-centred episode for any woman navigating menopause, midlife, or her next chapter with purpose and peace.

Why This Podcast Matters:
Too often, Black women’s menopause experiences are left out of the mainstream conversation. I’m changing that. With every episode, we create space for truth, advocacy, and sisterhood — because menopause isn’t the end of the story. It’s the beginning of a powerful new chapter.

In today's episode, Belinda Ajayi, a 55-year-old post-menopausal woman, explains why she left her job and had to rethink her life and the need for self-care. Belinda has worked as an educator for many years, and she recently decided to give up her daytime full-time job and work in the evenings because she struggled in the mornings with her osteoarthritis.
Belinda has spent much time with her GPs over the past 10-plus years; however, her GP has never mentioned the word menopause to her. The doctor has told her she has to lose weight, look after herself, prescribed antidepressants and told her she needs to take care of her knees because she suffers from osteoarthritis. Still, the doctor has not once mentioned that her menopause could also impact her health, even though she suffers from night sweats and other possible menopause symptoms.

Allyship
Part 1 of 4.
As a woman of colour, dealing with menopause and other health issues can be challenging. That's why having menopause allies is crucial. However, what matters most in being a good ally is cultural competence, regardless of culture, colour, or race. Family culture can also play a significant role in how women experience menopause. Black women often feel unheard when seeking healthcare, which can further exacerbate their symptoms.
However, some women may not participate in menopause research for various reasons. Overall, it's crucial to have allies who are culturally competent and willing to listen and learn to ensure that all women receive the support and care they need during this time. Most women of colour have to work with menopause allies when dealing with Menopause and other health issues.
Some of the talking points in this episode
What matters is culture, colour or race.
What makes a good Ally
We discuss the question, 'Where are you from?'
Family culture and how it impacts Menopause
Black women feel not heard when seeking health care.
Strong black women
How do allies become culturally competent?
Why some women do not participate in menopause research.

In today's podcast, we discuss fibroids. Uterine fibroids are a common condition, especially among Black women. About half of Black women have them by the age of 35, and 80 percent have them by the age of 50, compared to 70 percent of white women. Fibroid growth is also more common in black women than in other racial groups. Fibroids can cause weight gain, heavy periods, frequent urination, or pelvic pain, and may require surgery. (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/black-women-start-talk-uterine-fibroids-condition-many-get-speak-rcna20478)
Veronica Ebanks discusses her journey with fibroids and menopause in this episode. In addition to actively educating women on the topic of fibroids, she is passionate about recording and hearing the stories of black women suffering from this disease. Born in Jamaica, raised in London, she is an Afro-Caribbean woman. Business owner of Verelba Mind & Body, a company providing organic skincare, wellbeing products, and holistic therapies. Anita talks to Shell Robshaw-Bryan, 47 and perimenopausal. A full-time marketing director and side hustles as an outdoor, camping and wellbeing writer, writing for various publications and her own successful outdoors blog, Camping with Style. Shell loves to travel, and the outdoors and is a nature-loving, comfy-camping girl and cool water swimmer. She used the great outdoors and the healing power of nature to aid her slow recovery. She continues to spend time outdoors whenever she can, regularly meditating and practising mindfulness as she navigates through a challenging peri-menopause journey; she was diagnosed aged 42 and suffering from Peri-Menopause Disorder, and yet at 47, she is still struggling to find the right mix of medication and natural remedies.
