Bird's Eye View is an unofficial Orioles podcast from the perspective of two die-hard fans. Here, we experience the ups and downs of Orioles baseball, and do our fair share of praising and mocking our beloved team. Our position from the cheap seats helps provide that “Bird’s Eye View.” What we bring is perspective. We offer content that will entertain, (very) occasionally inform, and more often than not, validate a little homerism. When it comes to the Orioles, this is your official source for a lack of insight, and baseless opinion.

One Word Answers

After a recent game, the Orioles sent Jake a survey, which included a request to describe the Orioles in one word. This was… dangerous.

So we took the answers to the pod. Feel free to share some of yours with us!

Around the Bases

First Base: Ticket Debacle

The Orioles have lost their minds if they think that fans are going to pony up for a massive increase to the cost of season tickets, er, “Birdland Memberships” at a time when the team shows no serious plans of ever… having a plan.

For a team with no notable players on multi-year deals (only Tyler O’Niell, who has an opt out), this team is demanding an increase in commitment from its most loyal fans.

This would be less upsetting if the team were winning. And competent. But from the looks of things, the team is turning away its 13-game plan holders for 40 or 81-game ticket holders who may simply not exist.

Second Base: Trevor Rogers

Trevor Rogers has been a joy to watch this season. Sure, he hasn’t been here for much of it, but his 11 starts are beginning to form a sample size… and what a s...

This Week on the Socials

This segment has been cancelled this week, due to financial considerations. No other reasons… simply a financial decision. No really, don’t look behind the curtain, don’t think critically. Financial. Reasons.

Around the Bases

First Base: Hug Watch

Who stays? Who goes? And how does this trade deadline feel different than ghosts of deadlines past?

Second Base: Draft Business

The Orioles got some things right, some things wrong, and some things we’ll never know. Probably, right?

Third Base: The Core

Much like a personal trainer, we’re curious as to whether our core is strong enough. Also – is it the Fab Five, or the Jackson Five?

Home Plate: It’s all a simulation

We have a few simulation games that may prepare you to be an Oriole fan.

Fantasy Boss

You know what? This is getting silly. Let’s just call it like some of the minor leagues do, and crown a first half champion, and go forward for some meaningful games in September. Jake is crowned the early winner, and play begins anew at 0-0.

This week’s category is OPS.

Jake went with Jordan Westburg, Scott went with Jackson Holliday.

Who will own it?

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.

The BEVys: XIII

Welcome to the BEVys!

The BEVy Awards are back! What are the BEVys, you ask? The BEVys are a mid-season awards show in which we (and some of our friends in the Bird-O’s-sphere) hand out faux awards. You see, there is no real hardware, and no one is there to accept. The BEVys are a little bit like Who’s Line Is It, Anyway in the fact that the games are made up and the points don’t matter.

The Presenters

This year’s show features appearances by other fantastic content creators in the Bird-Os-Sphere:

* Eutaw Street Report

* Bird Notice

* The Baseball Widows

* Zach Wilt

* The Baltimore Banner

* The Roar From 34

* Bird’s Eye View

The Awards…

The 13th Annual BEVys feature the following awards:

* The Forgotten Man Award

* The Trade Deadline Award

* The You’re Too Old For This **** Award

* The Rock Bottom Award

* The Pleasant Surprise Award

* The Lewin Diaz Award for the Best Offseason Transient

* The Muppet of a Man Award

* The 2025 Slogan Award

Many Thanks!

The BEVys provides us an excellent opportunity to stop and smell the roses. We enjoy producing this podcast beyond measure, and we have many people to thank for making the effort possible, and for making it so much fun. Please know that there are too many people not listed here that are vital to what we do, and ensuring that we laugh so hard along the way. We apologize for not mentioning everyone by name (but the show is already long enough).

That being said, we would like to thank:

* The “Voice of the BEVys,” Jovial Jay Shepard.

* The many contributors to this show, and collaborators in the Bird-O’s-Sphere, at large. It seems that all the people we meet who create Orioles content online are generous with their time and talents, and know how to have a good time.

* OBP Apparel, for our sweet logo.

* The artists who provide our show music on a weekly basis: Songs from the Moon – Watching the Orioles (Bird’s Eye View theme song)

* Black Dog Prowl – No Robots (interstitial music)

* The Last Year – Mania (interstitial music)

* Our wives, the Baseball Widows, who encourage our passions and tolerate our podcast-related absences.

* Bird’s Eye View listeners. There may be no accounting for your taste, but we appreciate the opportunity to share in your Orioles fandom experience. It’s been fun getting to know you through the years, and to share our lack of insight and baseless opinions along the way. Thanks for making this a rewarding experience.

Episode 412: Trade Deficit

Leading Off

Are the Orioles good? No? Could they be? No? Bummer.

Trade Deficit

We go sans format to talk about the day’s Orioles news. The Birds swept a doubleheader, which made us wonder if the Orioles were good. And if they were not good, if they could be good. And if they could not be good, then… what?

We also discuss the departure of Bryan Baker, and what the return haul (a 37th pick) means for the Orioles’ stable of draft picks in 2025.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Keeping Receipts

We talk with Liz Thompson, SABR member and creator of fantastic scorebooks at Diamond Scorecard Designs. Follow her on Bluesky at lizzierie.

We discuss the joys of scoring baseball games – even if this season is not one for which we would like to keep receipts.

Around the Bases

First Base: Disaster Strikes

Wednesday’s game was a possible all-time implosion. After scoring eight runs by the second inning, the O’s packed their bats, and then handed the pitching staff a lighter. Ultimately losing 12-8 in a minor league stadium felt very appropriate.

Second Base: So… this has to be it, right?

Whether it was a good idea or not, the Orioles’ somewhat improved play over the last couple of weeks had led us to casually look at the standings – particularly the AL Wild Card race. Was it truly outlandish to think the Orioles could erase a 6.5 game deficit?

Third Base: RELEASE THE KRAKEN!

Gary Sanchez is back, so… that’s good?

With seemingly more Orioles on the IL than on the active roster, it is good to see that the team is starting to more closely resemble the squad Mike Elias envisioned.

Suddenly the Orioles are flirting with respectability— Eldritch Millennial (@bmorebaker42.bsky.social) 2025-06-05T23:35:25.245Z

Around the Bases

First Base: The Tinkerer

After last week’s first base was devoted to “what’s wrong with Adley?” we spend this week asking ourselves “is Adley back?”

We don’t want to yo-yo too badly, but we are very enthused about the what we saw in this more recent installment of The Tale of Two Adleys.

Second Base: As the Rotation Turns

Up until now, it has not been a good sign if we were talking about the rotation, but Orioles’ starters came up big this week, racking up a lot of innings (two 7 inning starts and a 6.2!), and helping pave the way to a six-game winning streak.

There may not be a true “top of the order” with these five, but the bottom is truly impressing. Here is hoping that they have turned a corner to move into a more respectable norm.

Third Base: The Ryan O’Hearn Appreciation Club

Ryan O’Hearn might be this year’s Ty Wigginton, but he will also be an All Star because he deserves it. O’Hearn has not only led the team’s offense, he has stepped up into a true leadership role when the team has desperately needed that, too.

Is it likely that O’Hearn will return to the Orioles in 2026? No. The pending free agent will want to get paid, and someone else is more likely do pay him than the Orioles are. But that is no reason to keep us from enjoying the good days when they are here.

Is Adley hurt? Is that the reason he’s not playing up to our expectations? This is a question we are asking ourselves far too often. How long do we wait before saying THIS is the real Adley Rutschman?

Look, on another day, we might have gone around the bases and talked about the various things going on in Orioles Baseball. But after a heart-breaking loss, we had to take a hard look at Orioles Baseball and ask ourselves “what needs to change?”

We look at it from the perspective of change with:

First Base: Oh no, we suck again!

Look, everything sucks right now. It’s not fun to watch Orioles Baseball. It’s not fun to listen to Orioles Baseball. It is not fun to attend Orioles Baseball.

And there is no real hope in sight. There is nothing significantly different about this team than there was two weeks ago when we said “man this is awful, but we won’t really be in trouble until June.”

This offense is not clicking. The pitching is not pitching. It’s just… oof.

Second Base: The Drubbing

The Orioles got beat 24-2, and it was… not fun to watch. We highly doubt that this is rock bottom for the Orioles 2025 season, but it was pretty ugly. That being the case… what did we see?

Error: Segment Not Found

We tried to pull an Around the Bases segment up, but we got a 404: Episode Not Found error.

Instead, we talk about the Current Troubles, and ask ourselves how long it might last, and whether it really matters anyway.

This isn’t just cope. We’d admit if it was just cope.

The season’s first nine games were full of a lot of non-competitive baseball on a number of fronts. The starting pitching wasn’t pitching, the hitting wasn’t hitting, and the bats weren’t even torpedoes. Like… what are we even doing?

Fantasy Boss

Fantasy Boss is tied up at 1-1, as Scott correctly predicted that Ryan Mountcastle would out BABIP Jake’s pick, Cedric Mullins. It is interesting, though, that both players were #1 and #2 on the team in the category this week.

Jake picked the category of DONGS as palate cleanser this week. Scott chose Ryan Mountcastle and Jake went with Tyler O’Neill.

Who will own it?

Around the Bases

First Base: Ker-thump!

The Orioles start the season 3-4 after suffering a series loss at home versus the Red Sox.  And Birdland seems ready to blow.

Folks have been focusing on the lack of certifiable ace and the rotation currently ranks 28th in ERA (6.35)

This is something folks were worried about all offseason, but how noticeable and concerned should we after the first week?

In the meantime, has the bullpen been a surprise?

Second Base: Thwomp

Meanwhile the Orioles offense has had some big games, followed by cold games.

We didn’t think there would be many surprises with the roster, as most questions were largely settled. But injuries have created a few surprises.

Around the Bases

First Base: The Need for Speed

Most Spring Training sound bytes are useless, but Brandon Hyde mentioned that he would like to see some of his guys work to add more stolen bases to the mix. Have stolen bases truly been a missing component in the Orioles’ game?

Second Base: Overreactions to Tomoyuki Sugano

Are we going to love translator Yuto Sakurai as much as Brandon Quionnes? Sugano pitched as well as one could have hoped. But… will it be enough? If he can be a 4th-5th starter in the AL East, then he will have held up his end of the bargain.

Third Base: Too Early for Rosturbation?

There really aren’t that many roster spots in question this year. But who is on the bubble? We unravel the least of the mysteries.

Home Plate: ABS in Spring Training

MLB has tried the ABS pitch challenge system in the independent leagues, they’ve toyed with it in the minors, and in 2025, they have introduced it in Spring Training. Here at Bird’s Eye View, we think that it’s here, and it’s spectacular.

Offseason’s Greetings

The Orioles have have a rather underwhelming offseason. But if you’re looking for “notable” acquisitions, look no farther than:

* The Wall, Part 2 – Right Handed Boogaloo

*  Tyler O’Neill

* Tomoyuki Sugano

* Gary Sanchez

The real stories are in who is NOT here. Yes, we’re talking Corbin Burnes and Anthony Santander. We discuss what the offseason moves mean, what the lack of moves mean, and what “means” means. That’s “means,” not, you know… “Means.”

Are the Orioles trying? Would our 2011 selves have been satisfied with this effort?

Around the Bases

First Base: They’re Bad. They’re Good. Rabbit Season. Duck Season.

The Orioles finally did it.  After failing to execute on multiple instances, the Orioles are going to the playoffs.

There’s that Orioles fan urge to say “we’re back” a few series after saying “it’s over.”

Second Base: Bring The Noise?

The Orioles have been phenomenal off the field, with their media production and knack for delightfully engaging with the fanbase. They seem to be all in on the #BeTheNoise campaign, and I appreciate the effort.

But let’s get real. #BeTheNoise is not what we need in this moment.

Ten years after the Royals came into Camden Yards and silenced a thunderous crowd, the Orioles have the opportunity to exorcize some serious demons. After 10 years, we finally have the opportunity to get revenge on a team that ended the season of what was possibly the best Orioles team I ever saw play baseball.

So what is needed for this moment?

Third Base: The Calvary

We have now seen a return of nearly every Orioles player that was hurt through the 2nd half of the season except for Kevin Gausman, I mean Grayson Rodriguez.

Orioles fans have been saying for a while now that they just needed everyone to be back and let’s see what happens in October.  Well they got their wish.

Which player is the x-factor on this team that will make or break the Orioles chances in October?

Home Plate: O’s vs Royals Wild Card Predictions

How exciting or dark will this upcoming week be in Birdland?

Fantasy Boss

Last (time) was a tie: neither of our selected players hit a dong after dark, and so we remain at 8-6 in Scott’s favor. Because the Orioles season could technically be over by next week, that means we need to get… creative.

Around the Bases

First Base: Hall of Very, Very Good

Nick Markakis was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame, and the heartstrings were tugged. We spend a moment appreciating Nick, and thinking ahead to who might be in the next crop of Orioles Hall of Famers. Are these the good old days? Is good… good enough?

Second Base: Can we trust ANYONE in the bullpen?

While we argue over whether Brandon Hyde is pulling the right levers, can we just spend a second talking about how ugly those levers are?

The Orioles bullpen is a mess, and there are very few guys back there fans can have faith in – and when they can, those guys tend to get overused. It’s the Magic of Orioles Baseball!

Third Base: Will the Taters be overdone?

Anthony Santander has been a huge part of the Orioles’ success in 2024. And it’s a contract year. In the first big test of new ownership, we’ll see whether the Orioles will pull the trigger, and whether they bid against themselves.

We love Tony. He’s our man. But will he be worth the money he will earn on the open market? Here’s hoping both that a fan favorite stays in Baltimore, and also that the team knows when to walk away.

Home Plate: Dongs After Dark

It’s that time again: with the Orioles on the west coast (and the ability to join the Mile High Club directly thereafter!), we read a few synopses of our favorite Orioles-themed scrambled films.

We apologize for nothing.

First Base: Which is it?

Are the Orioles one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, or are they a team in complete free-fall?The Orioles are:

* 20-20 in their last 40 games

* 5-5 in their last 10 games

* 10-10 in their last 20 games

So look. Are we bad? Is this a bad team? I’ve rooted for bad teams – I know how to do that. Is this a bad team, or is this team simply not good enough?

Second Base: OK, but what is going right?

We “argue” over which is the best story, including:

* Cedric Mullins has had a pretty good month (plus)

* Anthony Santander is one of the better players in the league

* Jackson Holliday’s return to the majors has been triumphant

* Zach Eflin has been everything we had hoped he’d be

Third Base: The noise surrounding Brandon Hyde

This Brandon is not going to remove himself from the running – but does he deserve to be fired? Jake has strong opinions about not having opinions, and Avi weighs in on a one-sided debate.

Home Plate: Stolen bases are a problem

This is the age old question: is the hall of very very good, good enough for Orioles switch-hitting catchers? Adley has not been adept at throwing out runners this season.

Lifeline at the Deadline

The Orioles did some serious work at the trade deadline. Between parting with one of their key links to the Dark Ages, to trying to recreate the 2023 Phillies bullpen… they were busy.

But was it… enough? Did they do the damn thing? Did they fail to give up too much, all while making themselves better right now, all while getting controllable talent?

We will see. But until we see, Birdland will argue about it.

Around the Bases

First Base: Rough Patches

So… how are we feeling?

The Orioles were 12-13 in July, and have experienced [clutches pearls] losing streaks! the Yankees are right on their heels, and the Red Sox are uncomfortably close.

Time to hit the panic button?

Second Base: Since when is Gunnar mortal?

Gunnar Henderson has experienced some unusual (and infuriating) defensive struggles at shortstop. Sure, everyone understands he’s tired. He didn’t get the benefit of the All Star break because he was busy representing the Orioles, the American League, and everyone who has ever wanted a sweet, sweet stache. The team is also in a situation in which the viable defensive backups are hurt.

So what’s the plan?

Pain, probably. Pain and patience.

Bird's Eye View
Bird's Eye View is an unofficial Orioles podcast from the perspective of two die-hard fans. Here, we experience the ups and downs of Orioles baseball, and do our fair share of praising and mocking our beloved team. Our position from the cheap seats helps provide that “Bird’s Eye View.” What we bring is perspective. We offer content that will entertain, (very) occasionally inform, and more often than not, validate a little homerism. When it comes to the Orioles, this is your official source for a lack of insight, and baseless opinion.
