What is the symbolic meaning of the seven-sealed scroll in the book of Revelation? Dr. Kurschner first described three common interpretations. Then he explicated his new view, which is the most plausible, called a certificate of debenture (i.e. debt).

The nature of the first four seals, fifth seal, and the sixth seal support this interpretation, which also gives additional support for the prewrath position in the book of Revelation.

The seals on the scroll are not God's wrath. Rather, the seals symbolize the accumulating debt of judgment that the wicked deserve and eventually will have to pay up when the scroll is opened, unleashing the trumpet and bowl judgments of the day of the Lord's wrath.

When Jesus returns it will not unfold how the Left Behind movies portray it, nor will it be how amillennialists portray it as some amorphous, instantaneous event where everything is ushered into the eternal state.

Rather, God will be glorified as he "shows off" his power through many events, especially the resurrection of the saints on earth as a testimony to the world before they are raptured to the sky where Jesus will be, where he then pours out his day of the Lord's wrath on this evil world.

There is a striking juxtaposition in Rev 7 depicting God’s protection of two groups just before the day of the Lord’s wrath begins with the opening of the seventh seal. The first group is the 144,000 “from all the tribes of the people of Israel.”

Dr. Alan Kurschner explained the problem with identifying Matthew 24:30 with the battle of Armageddon in Revelation 19. He responded to this standard pretrib interpretation and explained the most problematic point with this view, which violates the narrative logic of both the Olivet Discourse and the book of Revelation. In particular, the Noahic illustration and the trumpets and bowl judgments expose the deep flaw with this pretribulational interpretation.

Dr. Alan Kurschner discussed historicism, which is the eschatological position that says the thrust of prophecy in the Olivet Discourse and Revelation was fulfilled in the span of the church age.

For example, they would say that the Great Tribulation was not fulfilled in the first century, nor is it to be fulfilled in the future. Instead, it spans the entire church age (i.e., inter-advental).

Dr. Alan Kurschner talked about the key issue to the structure of Matthew’s Olivet Discourse: the relationship between vv. 9–14 and verse 15ff.

He first talked about the disciples’ questions about the sign of the parousia (second coming) and the end of the age, which opens up the discourse. Then he focused on the implications of the Greek conjunction oun (“therefore”) used in verse 15 for the overall structure, especially how it relates to the Antichrist’s great tribulation.

“So [oun] when you see the abomination of desolation–spoken about by Daniel the prophet—standing in the holy place (let the reader understand).” Matt 24:15
