In the final episode of this series of Between The Lines, Jamz sits down with LA based artist and musician Annahstasia.  They get into talking about their journeys, and looking back on their past selves and places, and Annahstasia talks about the expectations she faced in the career shift from modelling to music  And they discuss how important your surroundings are during the creative process, and the difference it makes when you are working alongside people who truly understand you. 

Saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia joins Jamz Supernova to unpick themes and lyrics from ‘Triumphance’, from her acclaimed album Odyssey.  They discuss what it takes to have a career at the forefront of a vibrant UK jazz scene, break down the psychological and economic realities of the touring model and its strain on musicians, and explore Nubya’s boundary shifting ambitions that have seen her also become a conductor and, now, spoken word artist.

Jamz is joined by singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya to talk about her song ‘Binding’.They chat about what it means to be a figurehead for the UK “alternative” scene, as well as how contradiction can often lead to the most truthful songwriting. They also discuss cultural background, and her evolving relationship to her mixed heritage.

As Jamz delves into ‘Mum Does The Washing’, poet and artist Joshua Idehen reflects on finding success with a ‘hit’ deep into a music career, and on finding truth and dark comedy in the different systems of patriarchy and oppression that sit at the heart of the record. They also discuss Joshua’s history of online and offline activism and the particular nuances defining the struggle against systemic inequality in this moment.

Låpsley speaks candidly on her experiences growing up as a young signed artist in the music industry. She discusses her liberation from that stifling time and her journey to rediscovering her happiest self, themes that she explores on her new album, I’M A HURRICANE A WOMAN IN LOVE. She also touches on the rarely-discussed subject of polyamory, and how she has sought connection to her female ancestors through the creative process for this new body of work.

The iconic Greentea Peng joins Jamz to talk about Jamz’s favourite track from her new album ‘TELL DEM IT’S SUNNY’. Breaking down ‘TARDIS (hardest)’, Greentea Peng gets into how having a daughter has impacted her writing and wider perspective. She talks about the importance of ritual and environment surrounding her music making process, and how a traumatic moment from her school years was a defining moment in finding her individuality.

Rapper and Actor Cristale joins Jamz to talk about her 2024 single ‘Will You Ever?’ They discuss how an understanding and love for poetry led her to writing lyrics, discovering the origins of Drill for the first time, and navigating the entertainment industry as a young artist.  Jamz and Cristale also talk in depth about friendship and relationships, and how staying present for loved ones is key when work and life can feel incredibly busy. 

Rapper-producer Iceboy Violet joins Jamz for this episode of Between The Lines.  They break down the lyrics of the track ‘Everything Ends With An Inhale’ taken from their  album ‘You Said You’d Hold My Hand Through The Fire’.  In this episode, Iceboy Violet gets into the breakup that influenced the song, the imagery behind some of the lyrics, as well as how location can be so key to finding your tribe and people, whether in-person or remotely.

Charlotte Day Wilson joins Jamz to go Between The Lines on the song ‘New Day’ taken from her most recent album ‘Cyan Blue’.  They talk about motherhood, fertility and genetics in a same-sex couple, the intimacy of live performance, and how experiencing synaesthesia influences her writing.

Jamz chats to rapper and musician Berwyn on this episode of Between The Lines about his track DEAR IMMIGRATION, taken from his Mercury-Nominated debut album.  The Trinidad-born artist talks to Jamz about how the song was inspired by his treatment at the hands of the UK Immigration authorities.  They also discuss how sacrifice plays a role in Berwyn’s creative process and how his deep love of psychology works its way into his music.

Singer-songwriter Crystal Murray joins Jamz to get between the lines on her song STARMANIAK.  Taken from her debut album ‘Sad Lovers and Giants’, Crystal talks about how the song came about, from leaning into other genres of music, from punk to shoegaze, as well as the questions she asked herself around some of the hard-hitting metaphors in the lyrics.  She and Jamz discuss finding safe spaces as a woman in 2024, about Black feminism, and regaining control and power.

Rapper and actor Bashy talks to Jamz about his song ‘Lost In Dreams’ taken from his long-awaited 2024 album ‘Being Poor Is Expensive’  They get into why the timing was important for Bashy’s return to music and how the album began its existence as poetry after taking some time to reflect on life during the pandemic.  Bashy talks about how ‘Lost In Dreams’ is a letter to Harlesden, and he tells Jamz how small moments in time could have changed his life entirely as a young Black man, like it has done for others he grew up with.

Lily Fontaine of 2024’s Mercury Prize Winner English Teacher sits down to chat to Jamz about ‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’.  Taken from their album ‘This Could Be Texas’, the lyrics of the song were written by Lily while she was at university, and while originally penned to her hometown Colne (home of the World’s Biggest Paving Slab), looking back, the song has become a metaphor for so many other things.  In this conversation, Lily and Jamz get into conversation about school, race and culture in small, predominantly white towns, and being creatively inspired by their mums.
