Ep #35 - Is NASAL (Nose) Better than MOUTH Breathing During Exercise? Scientific & Practical Answer!

Nasal breathing has grown in popularity but is it as simple as nasal (nose) breathing is better than mouth breathing, especially during exercise. In this Between Breaths Podcast episode I delve into 5 scientific studies to show what the research says, yet combine that with what the practical application of the science is with my own ultra running training as well as those professional and international athletes I support with breath training for performance and recovery.

Studies referenced;

  • 1995: Lower oxygen and greater carbon dioxide - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8599744/
  • 2015: Lower recruitment of Diaphragm with mouth brathing - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25900327/
  • 2016: Triathlete nasal breathing even at 100% intensity - https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Triathlete-Adapts-to-Breathing-Restricted-to-the-in-Hostetter-McClaran/7f1fd143f3652b6a79d87333ec8e70f0675bec6c
  • 2018: Recreational runner nasal breathing at all intensities - https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Effect-of-Nasal-Versus-Oral-Breathing-on-Vo2max-and-Dallam-McClaran/d5c63c9c6816b7ae95b5626d66b49b8514cbcc8d
