Talk Story Sesh w/Kai
In this episode, we talked to Kautious's sister Kailee and we talked about her struggles with being a Pacific Islander. We also talked about how life has become a little more difficult for Islanders during COVID, which kind of puts a brick wall in front of her future goals. We also touched on how stereotypes are damaging the hopes of many Pacific Islanders just because they are portrayed differently.

ACAB? or A Few Bad Apples?
In this episode, we covered the pros and cons of the law and justice system. We wanted to bring some awareness to the corruption that has been seen all throughout the justice system from recent events here on Oahu to other places around the world. This topic is a bit heavy and hard to hear, but we do feel like it’s a conversation that needs to be heard.

Traditional vs. Modern
This episode we explore the idea of traditional knowledge, cultural customs, and traditions to see if there is a way to use modern ideas and tools to help preserve that knowledge. We looked at many possible approaches by looking at many examples of knowledge being preserved, adaptions of patterns, and food. We even looked more closely behind the intent of meshing traditional with modernization, for if they intent is good the outcome of meshing can be perceived as good as well.

This Week’s Tea
In this episode we decided to share a little bit about what we have been feeling in our classes this week, in particularly going on a little rant about how one of our class is going. Although we have felt a little bit discouraged about asking questions to hopefully help bridge connections in things we are so passionate about, we know this is just a little bump in the road to achieve our degree. With that we then decided to come back from our short little break to share how we both are really doing this time around from reflecting on in person classes right before COVID, in that transition to moving all online going into this pandemic, and currently how we are feeling now with these online classes. Mahalo Nui Loa for listening to us, and if any of you out there listening are having a really hard time with life and or with school, feel free to reach out to us! We know how difficult these times are right now, and it always helps to talk it out with someone even if it’s just to check in with one another!

Stop The Cap
This episode is all about asking questions. Specifically, we ask the question “WHY”? We both take the time to ask some questions we have formed based off of our own personal experiences as well as calling out people throughout our communities to do better as a whole. We hope you all enjoy this episode, and we hoped that the main takeaway is to gain a better understanding of where our communities come from and how we should act when working together to show up for one another.

The Great Mahele
This episode is about the Great Mahele or The Great Divide in Hawai’i. We emphasize how the Great Mahele was a GOOD thing and helped to ensure that Hawai’i was protected in case of a foreign takeover. We also highlight how the translation from ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi to English and how the use of language changed the meaning of these important land documents. We also emphasized that Native Hawaiians in fact OWN LAND and how giving it to that mindset of “Hawaiians didn’t own land” disempowers our people whether you meant to or not. All in all this was a very complex topic and we both really tried our best to break it down and help to urge you folks why it is so important to know these things today especially when our own people are struggling to reclaim land back that’s rightfully ours. If anyone of you are truly interested in learning more about land tenure in Hawai’i, go checkout Chinen and Kuykendall as a good primary source to look at.

Switching Paradigms
In this episode we decided to open up the conversation by focusing on the many switched paradigms we’ve seen all throughout Oceania and the world. We took a look at how problematic it is to group up different Oceanic cultures into categories, and how shortening words from a language especially ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi can be extremely disrespectful. We also touched base on how in the Hawaiian culture it is said that "in language there is life and in language there is death" to help reiterate the fact that many Oceanic cultures throughout the Pacific also had that same cultural concepts, which we helped to bridge that connection when looking at the Māori tattoos on the womenʻs chins. We also then decided to look at labels and how that can be a bit problematic especially for the Black community. We also noticed how people have clear distinct opinions and perspectives of what labels are considered derogatory and others labels are more acceptable when looking at the much older generations as compared to todayʻs younger generations. All in all, we should be cautious of the words we use and understand the effects of these words when misused. Mahalo Nui Loa for listening. *EASTER EGG* Also in this video, we both explicitly hinted at a few of our newest design for our sticker that will hopefully be available for all of you folks to purchase on Lā Kūʻokoʻa, Hawaiian Independence Day (November 28).

Europeans in the Pacific
*We apologize in advance for all the loud background noise throughout this episode* This episode tackles the many different early encounters as well as experiences Europeans have documented through their art and or journal of the Native people of Oceania. From places like Tahiti, Guåhan, Marquesas Island, and even Hawai’i, many foreigners have looked at our communities as: helpless savages in need of a colonial fixation into civilization. We also talk about the hyper sexualization of our Native women and how it’s crucial to have some understanding of Pacific Islander cultural and religious contexts when looking at these early encounters, especially with the naked artwork we commonly see. As this podcast slowly drew on to getting more heated, we decided to look at some of the positive influences of Western concepts like education and religion. We also looked at other forms of influences such as ‘Iolani Palace.

Mental Health
This episode focuses primarily on Mental Health. Due to the overwhelming amount of schoolwork last week, we decided to share our own personal mental health experiences from last week pause of regularly scheduled program. From there we decided to shed light on other aspects prevalent today because of current issues. We also tackle depression through our own experiences as well as other’s experiences here in our family, home, oceanic cousins in the diaspora, and many others around the world. Although we defined and expressed our own views and interpretation on depression, we hope that we highlighted the significance of these issues without being too careless or overbearing. If at at any point we might have offended you, please feel free to reach out to us and let us know, for this way we could also share new information as well as be more educated on topics today that are important to us. Also we just wanted to say much mahalo for all the love and support we have received in our sticker and pin orders! We truly appreciate it!

Black Lives Matter

*TRIGGER WARNING: The N - word is said a couple times in this episode. Some of the talking points in this episode may be triggering for some of you folks. We apologize in advance.*

In this episode we decided to share about our personal experience with racism as a Black person and as someone who appreciates Black people and the Black community. From there we slowly talked about the origins of the police force, what was there purpose at the time, and how we personally see the police today. We also talked a bit about the Black Lives Matter Movement as well as talking about a few key incidents including the most recent one of all with Jacob Blake.

We know personally how hard, stressful, and unsettling these times are but we hope we were able to share a much more intimate space with you folks. Please enjoy another beautiful piece of art for this podcast episode made by the one and only Kautious with a K.
