Ep. 201: Hardware Wars
Zo had been transported to a galaxy far, far away and witnessed some fantastic events. The next thing you know he'd been transported again to another part of that same galaxy, later that same day. Except this time the space ships looked suspiciously like irons, toasters and cassette players. The people he met had even stranger names like Fluke Starbucker, Augie "Ben" Doggie, Princess Ann-Droid and Ham Salad. The galaxy is in peril and it just seems that these people aren't taking it seriously enough!!! Zo would be honored if you would join him on the celebration of the 200th EPISODE of Back Look Cinema: The Podcast! Finally, at long last, he sees fit to talk about what he had long determined to be his favorite movie and here to help him celebrate are two of his favorite hosts from one of his favorite podcasts: Rod and Karen from The Black Guy Who Tips! A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Zo, Rod & Karen visited a place where an unsympathetic Empire engaged in a campaign to strip the populous of their rights and gain unquestioned and unlimited control of the galaxy. Only a brave small band of ill equipped rebels stand in the way of totalitarian oppression. In their most desperate hour a new hope in the forms of a farmer, a pirate, a princess, two droids and a Wookie join their ranks . . . may the Force be with them. Ep. 199: Stephen King's Silver Bullet
Zo once visited a small town in Maine called Tarker's Mills. It was a quaint little place and extremely pleasant. Then, the murders started happening, once a month. It was the craziest thing that Zo had ever heard of happening in a small town. Also, he heard that the victims weren't stabbed, beaten or shot . . . they were torn apart! Whoever this crazy murderer was they seem to have a werewolf fetish. The attacks only seem to happen during a full moon. Before Zo high tailed out of that town he considered that maybe someone should shoot it with a Silver Bullet . . . for symbolic purposes (of course). Ep. 198: The Prophecy
Zo goes on a trip to experience the quiet desert lifestyle in the Midwest. In a small town he hears strange rumors of men perched on the edge of buildings like birds, a dead body of a hermaphroditic man with no eyes, and a little girl who draws pictures of impaled men. The vibe of this place is all off, and Zo finds himself uneasy and unsettled. The least credible rumor of all is that there is a war in hoven ven and that the war had spilled on to Earth. Are there Heavenly angels fighting in the streets? Angels are said to look over us, but they are also sent to kill us by the dozens if they were commanded to . . . Ep. 197: Beetlejuice
Zo had gone apartment hunting over the summer. His fortunes had changed and he could, for the second time, move out of his mother's house (and, though she professed love and admiration and was sure to remind him that he could come back home anytime - Zo was sure that she was glad to see him go). Zo looked at a lot of apartments, most of which he could barely afford. One particular apartment , that was well within his budget, was legitimately terrifying. It was definitely haunted. Zo definitely saw ghosts. One in particular was as goofy and cantankerous as he was absolutely horrific. On the several times that he visited the place, that is, weighing the options of affordability while living with a poltergeist, the spooky specter appeared as a giant spider, a giant snake, and a frightening used car salesman. Even with all the different shapes that the spirit would take the thing maintained the same ghoulish drunken clown face. Ultimately, Zo decided against renting that apartment. He supposed that was the goal of the ghost haunting the place: to keep Zo from renting it. The other thing that Zo could remember from these encounters was that he could've sworn that the thing had a name . . . Did someone call it Beetlejuice? Ep. 196: Once Bitten
Zo remembers that time when he spent time in Los Angeles back in the 80's and he had the most peculiar experience. It was a nice hot day even though it was around Halloween, so he thought he'd stop for a delicious treat at a nearby ice cream truck that happened to be nearby. The operator of the truck was relaxing in the passenger seat with the door open just chillin' out apparently. As Zo walked up to the chap he noticed how pale he was and that he wore all black clothes. Zo asked for an ice cream sandwich and the guy cheerfully got up and walked on over to the storage compartment at the side of the truck. He opened the compartment and handed over the sandwich and Zo handed over his change. Zo remarked on the older boy's appearance; he appeared to be a high school senior, asking him if he was getting an early start for Halloween dressed as a vampire. The guy freaked out hissing and screamed "I'M NOT WEARING A COSTUME!" Zo walked away worried about the man's mental health, but at least the ice cream was good. Ep. 193: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Zo is on one of his visits to the National Gallery of Art looking at beautiful artifacts found all over the world. Where are these things found and what ordeal does one go through to collect these priceless treasures? Zo imagines that it would take people with considerable resources, knowledge and grit. He had once read about a famed archeologist who risked life and limb and journeyed to the four corners of the Earth in order to retrieve forgotten treasures in an effort to share his finds with the citizens of the world. Through these artifacts he hoped to enrich the lives of everyday people and teach them about far flung cultures and lost civilizations. There was even a rumor that this archologist nearly lost his life looking for the actual Holy Grail, and that this distinguished gentleman, Dr. Henry Jones, Sr. was saved from death by the efforts of his son, a renowned archeologist in his own right, and their mutual friends. Though Dr. Jones, Sr. named his only son after himself, his son never appreciated the moniker of "Junior" and would rather be known as "Indiana" Jones and this was his last crusade. Ep. 192: The Fifth Element
Zo is in the 23rd Century (don't ask how he got there; it's not important). The important thing is that he was on a luxury cruise ship the Fhloston Paradise having the time of his life, surrounded by delicacies of every kind and rubbing elbows with some of the most powerful, popular and celebrated beings in the galaxy when, suddenly, the ship was boarded by Mangalore pirates and gunfire was everywhere. Being terrified, Zo found a table in a ballroom that he could hide behind and hope that someone would come along and defend him and the rest of the helpless passengers or that the criminal aliens would just grab what they wanted and go away. While he was hiding a man in a torn and bloodied tuxedo followed by a very skittish galaxy wide famous DJ, Ruby Rhod ,walked passed him. They seemed to know what they were doing. Hopefully, this would be all over soon. Zo just witnessed the most fascinating news conference: the most famous man in the world: neurosurgeon, rock star, physicist and martial arts expert, Dr. Buckaroo Banzai, had just announced that he and his tightknit crew - the Hong Kong Cavaliers recently perfected a way to cross into a completely different dimension. While in this strange new dimension Dr. Banzai had seen strange beings and fantastic landscapes. Dr. Banzai even captured one of the creatures from this other dimension and brought it back to Earth, but, from the way it looks, Zo believed that it was better to leave the dimensional barrier shut. Ep. 189: Armageddon
Zo and the rest of the world are negotiating with catastrophe as everyone has to come to accept the unreal reality of the sky falling down. In this case the sky is falling down in the shape and form of a devastating meteor shower. These aren't the normal types of meteors that normally burn up in the Earth's atmosphere; these bad boys are gigantic - the size of Volkswagens and mailboxes. They come from outer space and punch through the globes protective layer like so much tin foil, burning on their way to untold destruction. On impact they punch holes in buildings and send tractor trailers hurling through the air, but this is just a harbinger. The real threat is Dottie, an asteroid of unspeakable size. It's an extinction level event just waiting to happen. The only thing that stands in it's way are a rowdy gang of professional oil drillers with a crazy plan to dig a hole in the ornery space rock and plant a nuclear bomb inside. It's a plan so crazy that it just might work and if it doesn't then it's the extinction of most of the life on the planet. It's means the event that's been foretold in the Bible had come to pass . . . Armageddon. Ep. 188: Flash Gordon (1980)
Zo somehow finds himself on a strange world. He doesn't know if he's on a different planet, timeline, dimension or reality, but the one thing that he knows for sure is that he's not in Kansas anymore! In this place there are remarkable sites: floating forest covered moons in the upper atmosphere, floating mountains, a hovering city. There are strange creatures, robots and a variety of people: winged people fill the skies, tree people haunt the forests, and soldiers in gold and red armor patrol the ground. The different tribes seem to bicker with each other, and Zo is saavy enough to understand that there is an over arching presence that oppresses them all. What they need is a unifying force that could band them together so that they might fight their common foe and free themselves from the tyranny that they all live under.
