is this a masterpiece? Probably! it's incredible. and we talk all about it. thanks everyone for joining on this journey, and enjoy the great conversation
We've come to the end of our auteur detour and we've learned a lot along the way. but before we get into that there is an incredibly fun talk about a truly divisive installment into Christopher Nolan's filmography. we try to figure out why his themes fall flat in Tenet where they've worked so well in other places. also...Chris loves this movie! and he talks about why the puzzle of it is a complete wonder of a engineering that you can sit and ruminate on for hours.
then we talk about where Christopher Nolan is in his career and what he's meant to cinema in these last two decades. its a great talk.
we are wrapping up the podcast but stay subscribed because we WILL be popping in to do special episodes in the near future.
thanks for taking the journey with us film friends! the real detour was the friends we made along the waaaaayyyyyyyyy....

The final film in Christopher Nolan's "dark knight" trilogy offers a lot of insight into where Nolan has arrived as a filmmaker.
Ian, Travis, and Chris discuss all the things that miraculously work in spite of the films flawed politics and bewildering story. on the whole, all of the hosts love it and (despite where you may land on the Robin) debate; you probably will too! give it a listen!

Christopher Nolan's follow up to The Dark Knight, when he had the ability to make any movie he wanted with seemingly no studio notes, is probably the most divisive in his filmography amongst our hosts.
Chris and Travis both consider it a masterpiece of auteur cinema on a huge blockbuster scale. Ian appreciates the spectacle, performances, and originality; but found it too cold and filled with exposition to enjoy fully.
the consensus is: He's Wrong! but where do you land? listen won't you?

in this episode Travis, Ian, and Chris talk about what makes The Dark Knight stand out from other superhero movies. what makes it a Christopher Nolan movie, and talk a lot about the iconic performance from Heath Ledger. Also discussed are the problematic politics that continue to permeate the Nolan filmography and whether it's forgivable or not.
tune in!

Christopher Nolan's 5th film is a cool and original period piece about two magicians in a war of one-upmanship. It also delves deeper into many of the directors themes in a very interesting way. we talk about that and much more in this fun episode. give it a listen!

Christopher Nolan continues to climb the studio system ladder with Insomnia. Ian, Chris, and Travis discuss how it fits into his filmography, how it holds up against the other cat-and-mouse thrillers of the era, and whether Al Pacino was trying to sound like foghorn leghorn.

We're Back!!!!! season 3 starts now with Christopher Nolan. get into it!
Alfonso Cuaron returns after almost 8 years since Children of Men to create his most financially succesful and critically acclaimed movie to date. Gravity is a technical marvel and a bare bones story with only a couple actors and a lot of groundbreaking CGI.
we talk about our differing opinions about the movie and which parts work and which parts did not for some of us. Ian lays out his theory on what this movie is REALLY the story of...
Travis does his best to convince everyone that the script should be about equal importance to a movie like this as the score, and you're missing the point if you watch it for that.
and Chris pushes through his initial problems with the computer heavy imagery to agree that no matter what you say about this movie, Alfonso Cuaron is a master filmmaker.

Ian, Chris, and Travis get into the world of Children of Men. from the incredible, long, single shots with the camera moving through like a character, to the unbelievable prescience and socially brilliant messaging; it's clear that Alfonso Cuaron is in his stride as a filmmaker. pushing forward technically and conceptually.

Alfonso Cuaron follows up his independent film about the class disparities in Mexico with a dip into franchise filmmaking. the third and best Harry Potter film.
Ian, Travis, and Chris talk about how Cuaron fits in as director in this series and how he manages the constraints of it. we also talk a lot about wizards and shit. it's fun. also, travis uses the term Halloweenyana and that's fun too. listen to it won't you.

Cuaron's 4th film is a powerful and poetic masterpiece about two teenagers having sex with a woman twice their age. it is a uniquely independent movie at this point in his filmography in terms of budget and style, and it exquisitely tackles the dynamics of wealth disparity in a friendship and in a country possibly better than any movie we've ever seen. Ian, Travis, and Chris get into all of that and dig deeper into the transition Cuaron's career takes in this movie. give it a listen!
