THE FATHERHOOD OF GOD Now, first of all, THE LORD SHOULD SPEAK TO US as though we were the only person in the world. That is, that we should go away truly able say, "The Lord has spoken to me." The way in which he speaks and through the handling of the Word of God on his part, to get right through, and all the time have our hearts and our minds poised in this way: What is the Lord saying to me. Now : THAT IS ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL. TO MANIFEST THY NAME He said, : "I manifested. I manifested!" To manifest is something very practical. It's more than words, It is showing in a living way the thing that you are desiring to have grasped and understood. And so this matter of the Father God, THE  FATHER  GOD, WAS MANIFESTED IN A PERSON : JESUS The Person Himself was the manifestation. THE SON OF GOD COMES The Son... now, I'm not going to tell you at this point and do all the work for you, you do a little work on this and you will be greatly helped as well as greatly impressed; just go through your New Testament and tabulate the number of times Father and Son occur. Father and Son; that is, as to God and the Lord Jesus. And when you've done that, go the third step and tabulate the number of times that the Lord's people are referred to as His children, His sons, or as in a family relationship to Himself, "begotten of God," "born of God," and so on. It's full, isn't it? It's rich, we've only to mention it for a great deal just to come back to us and break upon us. There it is. Now, we said: THE SON OF GOD CAME FROM THE FATHER. A REDEEMED FAMILY And what is a family? Now, have any of you friends here got a family? You parents, how happy and pleased would you be if every one of your children was a unit in himself or herself, living an independent life without any concern, or consideration, or interest in any other member of the family, just so many isolated units in one place, which could not be called a home in that case, under one roof? Would you be happy about that? Or if they all went off and never had any concern very much for the other members. Just individuals. Well, they might be children of the same parents, might be, but the parents would feel the real, the real meaning of parenthood had been lost; was not there, if that was the situation. You can see through what I'm saying, how God must feel about anything and everything that is other than a family concept and a family spirit amongst His people. HIS PRAYER What a cry it is! What an appeal it is! Shall we say: what an agony it is, "Father, the hour has come... OH RIGHTEOUS  FATHER... FATHER, the world has not known but these have known... Father, as Thou and I are one that they may be one." Have you been all the time poised, just to hear the Lord say something to me, if somewhere, somehow I have violated the family spirit, the family disposition, grieved the Spirit of God Who is the spirit of the family? Is there something He's saying to you and to me? How does this apply to us? Is it just a lovely Bible thing? God forbid. It's a prayer with Him. Let us make it a prayer, and a prayer that will have a very practical aspect, for sometimes we can go a long way toward answering our own prayers because in this matter it's not all to be left with the Lord; He has done His part. Shall we pray? We do ask, we do pray, oh Lord Set, May we have more than words and thoughts: A DEEP HOLY SPIRIT REGISTRATION IN OUR HEARTS THAT CORRECT US, shall guide us, shall influence us in all our relationships. We ask in Thy dear Son's Name, GUARD OUR HEARTS, our minds, our lips in this time in between, so that we may come together again in Thy will without the necessity of starting again, able to go right on. CLASSIC SERIES " PURE GOLD " THE TRAVAIL TO RESTORE CREATION THE TRAVAIL TO RECREATED MAN The Principle of Travail The seed plot of this series : “And as many as shall walk by this rule, peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God” Galatians 6:16 “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied” Isaiah 53:10,11 “Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? shall a nation be brought forth at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children” Isaiah 66:8 “Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the residue of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel” Micah 5:3 “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And… we ourselves groan… waiting for… adoption… the redemption of our body ” Romans 8:22,23 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world” John 16:20,21 “My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you…” Galatians 4:19 Now let us : bring together particularly that phrase from Galatians 6:16: “The Israel of God”, and the fragments in Isaiah 53:10 and 11: “He shall see his seed”; “He shall see of the travail of his soul”. “His seed… the travail of his soul”. We have before us a very full, deep and far-reaching matter: nothing less than that of the producing, securing, training, and using of a spiritual seed — a new spiritual Israel. We begin with a brief consideration of a principle, found in a word occurring in all but one of the above passages — the principle of travail. Travail Implies Something Costly Just go through the Bible and see the great number of connections where struggle and conflict and pain and anguish presages the emergence of some tremendous new thing of God. All Divine Operations Effected Through Travail (a) Initiations This law is carried through from nature to the purpose of God, to the divine purpose, (b) Enlargements Whenever God sets Himself for increase, for enlargement, to get something more than that which He has already got, it seems that He plunges things anew into travail. (c) Consummation When these things begin to come to pass, lift up your heads; because your redemption draweth nigh a great travail i church and creation, Travail has Universal Significance It is a value secured for the Body of Christ beyond anything merely earthly and parochial. That is the principle of His travail, which is placed at the centre of the universe; and to share that does mean such enlargement, such release. You see, we come back to that again: release, enlargement, expansion, fullness, reproduction — use what words you will. The law is always the law of travail. Travail Reveals “Heart” or “Hollow” The Lord allows travail — indeed, He not only allows it, but appoints it — in order to find out whether really there is a heart-relationship to His things. The Two “Israels” Now this comprehends God’s whole conception of a spiritual Israel. Why have we taken that fragment — “the Israel of God”? You know, Paul was almost invidious when he used that phrase. If you look at the letter to the Galatians, you will see that he is dealing with two Israels, and in that phrase he is saying that there is a true Israel and a false. Ye Are Come unto Mount Zion While we wait upon Thee [on Thee, Lord, we wait] and while we do need Thee to bless us and ask Thee to bless us while we wait on Thee, we would rise even higher and say, Lord, satisfy Thyself. Get to Thyself the reward of Thy sufferings, the travail of Thy soul. Lord, find Thine Own Satisfaction. Ours will, we know, follow. We shall not lose anything if the Lord gets what He wants. And so, may we find our blessing in Thy Blessing, for Thy Name’s Sake, Amen. And we are coming to the concentration of the whole letter in one section. In chapter twelve, you will note that this concentration of the whole letter in this section is governed by the two words, “NOT—BUT.” The Letter to the Hebrews Chapter 12 18–25: 12:18 For you have not come to a mountain that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and to blackness, darkness, tempest, 12:19 The sound of a shofar, and the voice of words; which those who heard it begged that not one more word should be spoken to them, 12:20 For they could not stand that which was enjoined, "If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned;" 12:21 And so fearful was the appearance, that Moshe said, "I am terrified and trembling." 12:22 But you have come to Mount Tziyon, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Yerushalayim, and to innumerable hosts of angels, 12:23 To the general assembly and assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, 12:24 To Yeshua, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Hevel. 12:25 See that you don't refuse him who speaks. For if they didn't escape when they refused him who warned on the Eretz, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven, Now I want to be very implicit and careful. Did they really come to Sinai? You see the description? The Holy Spirit through the writer is making it very, very definite and positive and emphatic that this was something very real—so real that even Moses, who had such access to God, such fellowship with God, with whom God did speak Face to face as a man to his friend, this man said: “I exceedingly fear and quake.” Was that real? Was that imaginary? Was that just abstract? No, this thing was very real. People cried out, “Stop, we cannot bear this. We cannot endure this.” Very real! That is what they came to. If you had been there, no doubt, you would have said, “There is no imaginary thing here. This is something terrific.” “But we are come,” and do you mean to say that the “but” is less real than the “not”? Do you mean to say that this that we are come to is abstract, while that was concrete? Oh, no, I am sure that this is even more real, after its own kind, in its own realm; and, dear friends, that is the point upon which we must focus everything, the reality of what we are come to.
