We’ve all had moments that leave us at a total loss — for words, for direction, for what comes next. For me, that moment came when my baby died at 37 weeks. I know firsthand what it feels like to have the world stop and to wonder if you’ll ever find a way forward again. Sometimes it’s the death of someone you love. Sometimes it’s heartbreak, illness, trauma, or failure. But being “at a total loss” isn’t where the story ends. This podcast is about what happens after the unthinkable. Each week, host Katherine Lazar sits down with people who have faced life’s hardest blows and asks the real questions: How did you survive? What did it take to keep going? And how did you find a way to thrive again? Because the truth is, we don’t survive these moments alone. It’s in the stories we share and the community we build that we find the strength to keep going. Raw, unfiltered, and sometimes even funny, At a Total Loss is here to remind you: whatever’s left you speechless, you’re not alone — and there’s a way forward, together.

How Perfectionism Makes Grief Harder
Rio Richards, Grief & Trauma Recovery Therapist, is BACK to discuss all things grief. She opens up about what she struggles with after losing her father 4 years ago. We specifically talk about the 8 Ways That Perfectionism Makes Grieving Harder founded on an Instagram post that she made. Here's what we unpack: 1) Constantly wondering if you're feeling the "right" thing at the "right" time 2) Hiding your feelings because they don't feel "appropriate" 3) Starting but never finishing memorial projects because nothing feels "worthy" enough 4) Avoiding support because you "should handle this on your own" 5) Comparing your grief to others and always finding yourself lacking 6) Apologizing for talking about your loss or for "bringing everyone down" 7) Exhausting yourself by trying to appear "strong" or "put together" 8) Criticizing yourself for not being "over it" by some arbitrary timeline Follow Rio on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andthatsgrief/ Substack: https://substack.com/@touchingthefire?utm_source=top-search BROUGHT TO YOU BY LOSSLINK.COM! Mason Sawyer
Mason of the 10ninety Podcast was the guest speaker at our 2025 raised By angels Charity Gala this past weekend. He is also my *dream* guest as he is one of the first voices I heard when searching for guidance after losing Brody. I love this conversation. Two grievers (with very different losses) just speaking raw and unfiltered. Tragically, on July 25, 2021, Mason’s life changed forever when he lost his wife Kortni, son Riggins, and daughter Franki in a devastating car accident. He also lost his older brother, Race, and his nephew, Rider. Now focused on raising his surviving son, Blue, Mason draws strength from the 10/90 Principle, emphasizing that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond. He shares his journey and message of resilience through his podcast, The10ninety, and as a public speaker, inspiring others to find hope and purpose in adversity. Dr Joanne Cacciatore- Grief Doctor
This is one of THE most powerfully inspiring episodes I've done to date. PLEASE, if you are a loss parent and even if you are not, listen to this episode....Dr. Joanne Cacciatore is a bereaved mother to her daughter Cheyenne born still 30 years ago. She is also the founder of the MISS Foundation, an international NGO that serves families whose children have died. She is also a tenured research professor and senior Wrigley Institute of Sustainability Scholar at Arizona State University, spearheading the Graduate Certificate in Trauma and Bereavement. Her best selling book, Bearing the Unbearable: Love, Loss, and the Heartbreaking Path of Grief, is a national award winning best seller that has helped revolutionize the way our culture thinks, and feels, about grief. She works with and counsels families from all around the world who have experienced catastrophic deaths. Dr. Jo, believing that current practices around food production are a social, ethical, and environmental justice issue, is a vegan and hasn’t eaten meat since 1972. She also teaches meditation, mindfulness, and compassion and ahimsa practices to students and clients from around the world. Dr Jo started The Selah Carefarm just outside of Sedona, AZ. It is the first carefarm for the traumatically bereaved in the U.S. It is a very special place on 20 acres of beautiful farmland where bereaved family members can come to both give and receive connection, compassion, and understanding. All the animals on the carefarm have been rescued from abuse, neglect, torture, or homelessness. Our grieving families know what it means to suffer, and so do these animals. Dr Jo is truly a power house and a dream guest of mine, I am a different person after getting to speak with her. To get more info on the carefarm: https://www.missfoundation.org/selah-carefarm/ I mention her Open Letter to Grievers. I saved it to my phone screen and read it almost every day after losing Brody. Read it here: https://www.centerforlossandtrauma.com/an-open-letter-to-grievers This pod is brought to you by https://www.losslink.com/ ************************************* NOTE: I am not a doctor or a therapist. Holidays After Loss
*Recoded prior to Halloween*...Holidays after baby loss are so weird. I'll also share insight from other mamas on how they've dealt in the past and the advice they have moving forward. Ways to honor our babies will also be shared as this is a huge struggle, especially in the beginning. Here's what I tackle: Declining invites to holiday events Handling Triggering people Halloween and all the death Having living kids while mourning during the holidays. Thanksgiving and how I've handled it so far Christmas and ways to honor. And holidays change and evolve as time moves forward. I recorded one of these the holidays after I lost Brody. And I'm entering into my 3rd season and things are very different. So no matter what phase you're in, it might help to hear how it does change with time. Main point: YOU'RE SO NOT ALONE These are my viewpoints and topics that I sought out information about. This is the advice I give and share with you all based off hundreds of conversations I've had. I hope that i helps as we navigate one of the hardest times of the year. Triggers, Spirals & Complaining
I break down 3 popular topics after baby loss. What triggers us & how we react to it The grief spirals that come out of nowhere & how they are not setbacks Having zero tolerance for others complaining Y'all talk to me about these things ALL the time on instagram and I'm diving in to explain my thoughts as well as the feedback I've gotten from 100s of mommas about them. I may or may not go on a small rant (lol) but hey whatever, that's how I roll. So, whether you agree or not on everything, I hope that some of it helps you feel less alone & validated for the complicated experiences and feelings we have after we lose our babies. Catherine: Incompetent Cervix, Placental Abruption & DIC
Catherine is the mother to her TWO angel babies, Brooklyn (11/29/16) and Miles (12/7/17 - 12/14/17) and her now miracle baby, Lux. Catherine's experiences have covered a range of "rare" circumstances. We discuss ALL of it. She has faced an incompetent cervix, placental abruption, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), the NICU, a journey with a gestational carrier and miscarriages. PAL Birth Plan
Amanda, Junie's Mama, comes on to talk about getting your Pregnancy After Loss (PAL) Birth Plan together. Juniper was born still at 38 weeks due to an undiagnosed small placenta (if you want to hear the whole story, find the episode 'Amanda + Juniper'). Since then, Amanda has been a huge advocate for preventative care as well as a resource for so many mama's who have experienced a tragic loss. We know how much fear there is around the birth of the baby after loss, so Amanda has a list of things that we can think about doing to prepare. We also dive into protocols & preventative measures for the pregnancy as we found that having a game plan helped so much while navigating this scary time. What Else We Lose After Loss
I asked what y'all wanted to hear about. So many of you wanted to discuss what else we lose after our babies die. I took your submissions and I discuss the following in this episode: The inability to relax and always have to run at max capacity. The loss of innocence Losing our faith. Becoming an extreme introvert now. Unable to look at old photos Accepting this reality No longer having a tolerance for petty stuff Debilitating Anxiety that we never had before Loss of trust that things will be ok. And a lot more... I also go on a tangent about lawn maintenance so I'm sorry lol. I do a lot of these polls to see what y'all want to discuss, so if you don't already follow on Instagram, go here and be a part of the next poll>>> @thekatherinelazar Want to watch this episode? At a Total Loss
