Once you know how to shoot a dialogue scene, you can shoot almost any film. I failed because I didn't know which was the right shot. Do you?
00:00 Intro
Most aspiring filmmakers think they will figure out how to shoot a scene after they are on set and everything is ready. But if you want to become a professional filmmaker, you have to learn otherwise.
A dialogue scene is one of the most common scenes you will come across in any film (any film on humans that is). So learning to shoot a dialogue scene ensures that you can shoot almost any film.
Disclaimer: None of these are to be taken as rules, but only guidelines.
01:17 1. What is the Purpose of the Dialogue Scene
Every scene in your script should be serving a purpose: push the story forward.
01:42 1.1 Why Purpose
Without it you have no direction. Without a direction, how do you know which is right from wrong?
02:59 1.2 How to Identify a Purposeful Scene
04:06 2. Preparing to Shoot a Dialogue Scene
This is the fun part. All you have to do is just sit back, relax and do the following:
- Imagine
- Storyboard or Shot List
- Rehearse
04:28 2.1 Imagine
Observe how the written words inspire visuals in your head. Let your imagination run free. You don’t have to know how to shoot that crazy imagination of yours right now.
05:36 2.2 Storyboard
Take a blank piece of paper and roughly sketch out the images you saw in your head. Use stick figures. You don’t have to have any special artistic talent. Trust me. I don’t.
06:35 2.3 Why Storyboard or Shot List
07:43 2.3 Rehearse The Dialogues Scene with Actors
Let them learn the dialogues and work off of each other, while you guide them to bring the scene to life. This gives you new inspiration (angles, dialogues, frames). Let it all guide you to make something better.
09:09 3. How to Shoot a Dialogue Scene
09:33 3.1 Shooting the Dialogue Scene
1. Take the Shot List
2. Place the camera
3. Position actors
4. Roll camera and action
5. Check shot list. Repeat.
Focus on developing your craft.
10:55 3.2 Fun Fact
12:06 3.3 Rules of Shooting a Dialogue Scene
13:41 Concluding
So how do you shoot a dialogue scene?
1. Find the scene's purpose
2. Imagine the scene
3. Storyboard it
4. Rehearse with actors
5. Shoot it and practice

00:00 Intro
01:03 Gaming
A game that I loved to play as a child. I had not been on set for over a year. I missed creatively solving challenges.
02:16 The Game I Once Loved Playing
It takes a while to get the hang of all the controls and the gameplay. So I searched for gameplay videos on YouTube.
03:16 Watching Gameplay Videos
Found videos documenting things from the very beginning, the decisions, the whys, the implementation, over many months and years.
04:24 A Gameplay of Art Creation
Why did JK Rowling give Harry round spectacles and not square? What was James Cameron thinking when he first saw the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean? Whatever it was, it earned him the Oscars.
07:07 Gameplay of Turning an Idea into a Story
And there was my solution! A series of turning an idea into a story and then a film.
08:41 Challenges in Documenting
What if the film becomes a massive success? What if it doesn't or if it takes 10 years or never ends up on screen because I decide the story isn't working?
These are exactly the fears and risks of every writer that I hope to capture for you! In sharing my story in this documentation journey what if someone steals my story? Again! Another fear of every artist.
Many have had the idea of starting a burger joint. But it was the execution of McDonalds that made it a massive success. It is not the idea that matters, but the execution.
09:38 What I Gain by Documenting My Journey
- help you
- sharing my learning
- not only turn my ideas into films, but do it for others as well
- build an audience
- binge worthy playlist on how the film came about
11:56 Language I Will be Using
Though I write in English, the final film and the videos will be in Malayalam (my mother tongue). If you are a Malayali who is not comfortable with English, writing parts might be difficult. If you are not a Malayali, then the videos and films will be difficult.
12:17 Expected Timeline
- 2022 November: Release film
- 2022 January: Start working on film
- 2021 December: Publish story

On my first film set I was so scared that I couldn't see in the script. I hope you can learn how to direct a film from my stupidities.
00:00 When I went to Direct a Film
One of the first times I went to direct a film I was so scared that when I looked at the script that I myself had written, all I could see were black dots. I hope you can learn how to direct a film from my stupidities. Here are 4 very basic things you need to know to direct a film.
01:33 An Engaging Script
In Ramayana you wonder if Ram will ever get Sita back from Ravanan. “Drama is anticipation mingled with uncertainty”, said William Archer. Every story that holds your attention till the end will have such an element.
02:31 Right Actors for Right Parts
It is one of the most important jobs as a director. Bad acting is easily spotted by audience. It takes practice to live in front of the camera. Find actors who match your character and knows to live in front of the camera.
03:21 A Crew to Direct a Film
The better the communication among your crew, the better what ends up on screen. The most important ones:
- Cinematographer
- Sound
- Editor
When choosing look if:
- Know their job well
- Good to and fro communication
- Trusts you and your vision
04:17 Basic Understanding of the Film Language
Easiest way to learn is by watching and analysing films. For more,
- read https://www.amazon.in/Film-making-Alexander-Mackendrick/dp/0571211259/
- or watch https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuntSxVsd5TNh8KJJysrDZCV8cz-ptFXI
05:22 Bonus: Learn by Making Film After Film
Make as many films as possible for the least amount of money and time so that you can go through many iterations and learn the various departments quickly. Akira Kurosawa started as AD working in each dept, before he got to direct.
06:22 From My First Set
After being scared on set of my first film I made 10 shorts, and a feature film, while currently scripting the second film. Start wherever you are. If I can, you definitely can.

4 things you need to know to make a short film, in Malayalam. Learned from 8 years of making films.
00:00 Most searched short films
Did you know that Malayalam and Bangla are probably the languages with the most number of shorts films being made on YouTube. How do you stand out in such a crowded space? My journey into filmmaking started with the first short film I made in 2012. From what I learned in the 8 years since, sharing here 4 things you should know to make a short film.
00:59 Use the gear you have
What aspiring filmmakers focus on the most, but what least affects an audience is your gear. Today you can shoot not only a short film but an entire feature film on a phone. We did. You can also record sounds on your phone if the sound design is ready.
03:08 Perfect Casting
Whatever you may do behind the camera, audience sees your efforts through the actors in front of the camera. Three things to look for:
- matches the character
- studied acting (formally/informally)
- experience in front of the camera
Don't skimp this.
04:53 Choosing an Editor
A film is born when two images (audio of course) are put together to form a third image in the mind of the audience. Two things to look for:
- can tell stories
- knows the technical skill
05:44 Most Important, Story Structure
The knowledge on how to tell a story, when to tell what and when not to tell what, to keep the audience at the edge of their seat. Find a friend, narrate, observe their reactions, and based on that, rewrite your story. Easiest way to improve Story Structure.
07:35 Bonus: Your next step
Figure out what you have to do next and do that.
