#30 What is the most simple and effective way to replace fossil fuels in the lime kiln?
An average lime kiln at a pulp mill will use up to 75 m3 of heavy oil to produce 450 t/d of burnt lime. This adds up to around 25,550 m3 of fossil fuel use per year. Some mills produce much more burnt lime, up to 1,000 t/d, which represents a significant cost in heavy oil use as well as adding to the mill’s CO2 emission penalties. It is now possible to completely replace fossil fuel burning in the lime kiln by using the LimeBio-Powder biofuel plant from ANDRITZ which powderizes various types of biomass. The powderized biomass is then fed into the lime kiln and is burnt in exactly the same way as heavy oil. The LimeBio-Powder biofuel plant can operate with various types of biomass including forest residues and pellets as well as waste wood and bark. Easy to install, and with a small footprint, the fully automated system can be integrated into a mill’s existing DCS’s or ANDRITZ automation and digitalization solutions. In this podcast we talk to ANDRITZ white liquor plant experts Jari Vuorela, Product Manager and Ville Seppänen Sales Manager about the simplicity of installation and operation, and the major cost and emission benefits of the LimeBio-Powder biofuel plant. #19 What are the possibilities to reduce NOx emissions from recovery boilers?
Often described as the “beating heart” of a pulp mill, the recovery boiler has come a long way since it was first invented nearly 100 years ago. Although recovery boilers carry out a virtually irreplaceable function at pulp mills, including the recovering inorganic chemicals, burning organic chemicals and recovering heat for generating energy, there is still work to be done when it comes to emissions - especially NOx emissions. In general, emissions from the recovery boiler have decreased substantially over the last decades, for instance CO2, dust and sulfur emissions, however in the case of NOx emissions new technology has been required. In this podcast we find out how ANDRITZ has developed its new "Lo-NOx" Low Emission Recovery Boiler concept. Hear from ANDRITZ experts Hamilton Brandao, Technology Director Recovery Boilers, Naveen Chenna, Director Research & Innovation Recovery and Power Side Streams and Kasper Skriver, Global Product Manager ESP, about the pilot trials and successful launching of the latest recovery boiler concept as part of the CircleToZero initiative.
