Peter Jackson convinced Hollywood to fund three epic films at once, then filmed them back-to-back in New Zealand. Madness, and it changed cinema. John, Westy, and Matt journey to Middle-earth to explore how a low-budget horror director made the impossible: a fantasy epic that satisfied Tolkien purists and mainstream audiences. From the epic production, through groundbreaking innovations to an actor's fear of flying (hence all that walking), we're telling the story behind the film that launched a thousand memes, with some big opinions and laughs as we go. After second breakfast of course.
Telling the story of Hollywood, one film at a time.

Denzel Washington swaggers through the streets of LA in this dark, morally complex thriller. Luke, Matt & Westy ride shotgun with Alonzo Harris (King Kong ain't got nothing on that performance!) as they unpack the intense production, the gritty LA backdrop, and why Antoine Fuqua insisted on shooting in some of the city's most volatile areas. From the claustrophobic car interior sequences to that explosive climax in the projects, we're proving that this is chess, it ain't checkers.

Michael Mann brings his signature intensity to colonial America in this sweeping epic. John, Matt & Westy track Daniel Day-Lewis through the wilderness (he was there for long enough!) as they unpack the production chaos, the legendary score, and why Mann insisted on the crew getting rid of a pretty key part of the solar system. From the Appalachian locations to that final clifftop scene, we're staying alive no matter what occurs.

In 2002, a graphic novel about fathers and sons in Depression-era Chicago became Sam Mendes' haunting follow-up to American Beauty. Road to Perdition transformed Max Allan Collins' crime saga into a meditation on legacy, violence, and the impossible task of protecting your children from the world you've created - all while delivering one of cinema's most visually stunning tales of revenge.
We're exploring two intertwined stories behind this masterpiece: First, the remarkable creative journey - from the source material to David Self's screenplay that captured the essence whilst reimagining the structure, to Mendes' decision to follow his Oscar-winning debut with a genre film that nobody expected. Second, we dive into the technical revolution that brought 1930s Chicago to life - Conrad L. Hall's final, Oscar-winning cinematography that painted every frame like an Edward Hopper illustration dipped in blood, Thomas Newman's melancholic score, and the production design that created a world both beautiful and brutal.
Through segments like The Director, The Cast, and The Crew, we examine how a story about a mob enforcer's one last job became a profound exploration of American mythology, the weight of legacy, and whether redemption is possible when your hands are stained with blood - proving that sometimes the most personal films emerge from the most unlikely genres, and that true artistry can transform pulp into poetry.

Winner of eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Miloš Forman's masterpiece tells the story of Mozart through the envious eyes of his rival Salieri. But how did a Czech director come to make a classic Viennese tale? And what's the real story behind "too many notes"?
Join John, Westy, and Matt as they dive deep into the making of a theatrical triumph turned cinematic classic. From Peter Shaffer adapting his own stage play to Tom Hulce's rock-and-roll approach to playing Mozart (yes, really), we explore how Forman transformed a Broadway hit into one of cinema's great achievements.
We uncover the fascinating production history, including the painstaking recreation of 18th-century Vienna, the decision to film in Prague during the Cold War, and which Hollywood legends (plus a Rolling Stone) were originally considered for the lead roles. Plus, discover how F. Murray Abraham's performance as Salieri became the perfect embodiment of jealousy and genius, and why this film makes you simultaneously want to compose a symphony and maybe poison your neighbour (we don't recommend the latter).
This is the story of how one of history's greatest composers became the subject of one of cinema's greatest films—told the way only All The Right Movies can tell it.

On the latest episode of A Life In Movies, the movie interview podcast by All The Right Movies, we're talking to acclaimed novelist David Morrell.
David is the esteemed author of over 30 novels, short stories and comics, including the creation of pop culture icon John Rambo in his groundbreaking novel "First Blood". Originally an academic who taught American literature, David balanced his writing career with university life before becoming a full-time author.
Speaking to us from Santa Fe, David takes us behind the scenes on the incredible journey of First Blood from page to screen - a process that took years and went through multiple studios, with potential stars including Steve McQueen and Paul Newman before Sylvester Stallone ultimately brought Rambo to life. We discuss the differences between his novel and the film adaptation, his work on the novelizations for the sequels, and his experiences on set during the filming of Rambo III.
David also shares fascinating insights into his academic influences, particularly Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", and how the Rambo phenomenon helped bring awareness to PTSD and the treatment of Vietnam veterans. A truly captivating conversation about one of cinema's most enduring action heroes.

In 1997, a struggling screenwriter's anxiety about his high school reunion somehow transformed into one of cinema's most beloved cult classics. Grosse Pointe Blank took the seemingly impossible concept of a hitman romantic comedy and turned it into a genre-defying masterpiece that couldn't be made in today's Hollywood.
We're unpacking two stories about this remarkable film: The chaotic production tale - from Tom Jankiewicz's original script written while working at Big Lots, to John Cusack and his Chicago collaborators completely rewriting it through improvisation when they realised the original wasn't working. Second, we dig into the creative revolution behind this cult classic - George Armitage's three-version approach to every scene, Joe Strummer's punk-influenced score, and how a group of friends threw out the Hollywood rulebook to create something genuinely special.
Through segments like The Director, The Cast, and The Crew, we explore how a film about a contract killer attending his reunion became a profound examination of American masculinity, moral flexibility, and the impossibility of truly going home - all while delivering whip-smart dialogue and career-defining performances, proving that sometimes the best films come from creative chaos rather than corporate planning.

In 2017, Denis Villeneuve dared to return to the neon-soaked streets of Los Angeles and somehow turned a seemingly impossible sequel into one of cinema's most breathtaking sci-fi masterpieces. Blade Runner 2049 earned critical acclaim and Roger Deakins an Oscar, but the weight of following Ridley Scott's iconic original was almost as crushing as the film's dystopian world.
We're unpacking two stories about this ambitious sequel: The pressure-cooker production tale - from Villeneuve's meticulous approach to honoring the original while creating something entirely new, to the studio's gamble on a $150 million art film that audiences weren't quite ready for. Second, we dig into the craft behind this visual symphony - Deakins' groundbreaking cinematography, Ryan Gosling's nuanced performance as K, and how Villeneuve created a meditation on memory and identity that somehow made a three-hour runtime feel essential.
Through segments like The Director, The Cast, and The Crew, we explore how a film about artificial beings became a profound examination of what makes us human - all while delivering some of the most stunning visuals ever committed to celluloid, proving that sometimes the best sequels are the ones that expand rather than repeat.

In 1957, David Lean took audiences to a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Burma and somehow turned bridge building into one of cinema's great psychological dramas. The Bridge on the River Kwai became a massive hit, but behind the scenes was almost as chaotic as life in the jungle.
We're unpacking two stories about the WWII epic: The wild production tale - from Lean's obsessive filmmaking in the Sri Lankan jungle to the controversy over who really wrote the screenplay (Hollywood politics got messy). Second, we dig into the craft behind the sweeping war film - the massive practical bridge construction, Alec Guinness's iconic performance, and how Lean created visual poetry out of warfare (not for the last time, either).
Through segments like The Director, The Cast, and The Crew, we explore how a film about building a bridge became a meditation on honor, madness, and the absurdity of war - all while somehow making the "Colonel Bogey March" permanently stuck in your head.

Sicario cemented Denis Villeneuve’s place in Hollywood as the new thinking person’s wunderkind director. Helped by three outstanding lead performances, this cartel crime flick won box office and critical plaudits.
