There’s a lot of overlap between hackers and sex workers. The two demographics share obstacles regarding constant misrepresentation and the threat of reactionary government and prosecutorial overreach. Deviant Ollam, a renowned lock-pick in both the digital and physical realms, noticing these areas of shared threat and interest, began freely offering his expertise in physical and digital security basics training for sex workers.
In today's episode, Deviant and I talk about assessing one's personal "threat model", managing the delicate balances between freedom, safety and security, what kinds of crazy gadgets are out there to both compromise and assure your safety, and the perfect way to construct an impenetrable password.

Every year, tales of the great and fabled Super Bowl sex trafficking upswing make their rounds online. These rumors instill fear in the upstanding public, and infuse law enforcement and anti-trafficking organization with cash for intervention measures. But this myth has been long-debunked, so why does it remain in such heavy rotation? Join me in talking with Reason.com Senior Editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown about the origin of this moral panic, and check out the Super Bowl Sunday Sex Worker Bail Out Fund, coordinated by SWOP-Behind Bars' Alex Andrews, in partnership with LIPS Tampa.

This week I’m joined by Vanity Fair reporter May Jeong. May has an impressive, award-draped body of work that is soon to include a book about sex work. She came into my life due to her incredible loongform reporting on the Robert Kraft Case. Our conversation in this episode centers around her evolution as a writer, how she came to be on the sex work beat, and how her own experiences, many relevant to her identity as a woman of Korean descent have shaped her conception of journalistic ethics and tone in covering sensitive topics.

Part Nine of our December 17th - International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers series.
In August 2018 Donna Dalton-Castleberry was shot to death by a man pretending to be heading a prostitution sting. In an ironic twist, her killer was in fact a 30-year veteran of the Columbus, OH police department - one under investigation at the time for this exact scam.

Part Eight of our December 17th - International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers series.
On September 27th, 2015 a 42 year old working mother went out on a call to see a client. Maxine Showers of Liverpool, England left for work and never came home. Her murder alleged he'd punched her when she tried to rob him, and that she left of her own accord. But the coroner's report would tell a very different story.

Today Anita DeFrancesco, Donna's cousin and the author of The Donna Gentile Story: The Life and Murder of an Innocent Runaway, joins me to tell her story.

In February 2020, prolific serial rapist and predator Jose Torres, AKA "Joey The Player" was arrested in Boston, MA and charged in federal court with Coercion and Enticement. Torres is alleged to have been luring sex workers across state lines - then raping and robbing them - for over a decade. He awaits trial in New Jersey. On October 28th, 2020, there was another major development.
Federal law enforcement NEEDS OUR HELP to build the strongest possible case against this violent threat to the community. If you or anyone you know have information about, or have had an encounter with Jose Torres, AKA "Joey The Player", contact FBI agent Mike Scimeca at (862) 849-9163, or email him at Mascimeca@fbi.gov. If you are a sex worker survivor of violence who would like to connect with resources in your community for counseling and victim's services, or just need to talk (anonymously or otherwise), call the SWOP-Behind Bars Community Support line at 1-877-776-2004. We also have a chat line that can be accessed from our website swopbehindbars.org.
