For Shane's next pick of an album that has "been around awhile" he selects the iconic debut "Ten" by grunge legends, Pearl Jam. Even with Trevor's Seattle roots, and Shane's incessant teasing about being him being old, Trevor and Shane were too young to remember the grunge movement while it was happening. Nonetheless, these songs were and continue to be pervasive both in their lives and in the historical backdrop of rock music in general. Though Trevor didn't own this album growing up, and Shane may have only had a Napster copy, songs from this album were played on friend's older siblings boom boxes and '87 trans ams in the background of both their coming of age years. For all of these reasons, a wish for a vinyl copy made it's way onto Trevor's Discogs list years ago and finally into his hands this month as album number 2 of 3 in a gift box from Shane as he revealed his pick to Trevor. For his next pick of an album that has “been around awhile,” Trevor takes us back to 1997 and selects Radiohead’s groundbreaking album Ok Computer. This was more or less Shane’s entry point into the band, at least as far as consuming a full album is concerned. As is commonly the case with this band, it took time for Shane to appreciate these songs and this album in its entirety, just like it did for Trevor as a 13 year old upon its release. The influence of this music laid the groundwork for so many albums that came after it, and for that reason, upon reflection nearly three decades later, this music doesn’t feel as hard to digest as it did in its release, but the creativity and innovation remain as impactful as ever. Ok Computer also remains a pivotal album in Radiohead’s discography as they would move even deeper into experimentation in albums to come. Finally, Shane and Trevor discuss the importance and value of this experimentation on the zeitgeist of popular music but balance that with the value of a band that may by contrast find its groove and stay there. For his next pick of an album that has, “been around awhile” Shane selects Mandolin Orange’s 2015 release, “Such Jubilee.” Mandolin Orange (now known as Watchhouse since a name change last year) is an Americana/Folk duo from North Carolina formed in 2009 by husband and wife duo Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz. Shane has special memories with this band seeing them live with his father. Trevor’s introduction to the band was their 2019 release which Shane had recommended when Album Divers was in its infancy though never materialized as a deep dive episode. This 2015 release was written by the couple while on the road, but recorded back at home in North Carolina and offers a stripped down aesthetic which allows the listener to absorb lyrics offering little worlds about the importance of savoring the moment in the context of love, loss, and generational connection. This album represents the first  revelation by Shane of a trio of albums that he purchased on vinyl for Trevor as a surprise gift. The next two will be revealed to both him and the Album Divers audience in due time. For Shane's pick of a 2022 album, he selected indie rock staple Arcade Fire and their new album "WE.” This was a unique endeavor for your hosts at Album Divers in that Arcade Fire is a band Trevor had been following since their beginnings but lost track of in recent years, and Shane, though familiar with the band’s music, had never listened to an entire album from start to finish. Arcade Fire’s latest album “WE” was written in the throes of isolation brought on by the Covid-19 Pandemic. Arcade Fire weaves interstellar imagery with Greek mythos and takes the listener through the rabbit hole that is the disintegrating human connection found and lost again in technology and social media. Like many of Arcade Fire's previous releases, this record is a concept album. It is divided into two halves. The first, titled “I,” represents the self, and the second, "WE,” portrays our relationship with others. For his first selection of 2022, Trevor goes all the way back to 1963 and selects Sam Cooke's second live album, "One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club." Though recorded 22 years earlier, this album was not released to the public until 1985 as Sam Cooke's record label felt that the raw and unpolished sound of Cooke performing in a small predominately black club in Florida would damage his image and alienate his suburban white audience. "One Night Stand" presents Sam Cooke like never heard by most audiences during his life and is filled with raw emotion from both Sam and the crowd, as Sam's voice becomes progressively more raspy with the swelling energy of the evening. Shane and Trevor discuss Sam Cooke's life and history, his role in the civil rights movement of the 60s, and they attempt to make sense of his tragic killing at the age of 33, one year after this album was recorded in 1964. For his last selection of a 2021 album, Trevor selects Lucy Dacus' June release titled, "Home Video."  Lucy Dacus has carved a name for herself with her unique songwriting and layered themes. Once a film school student prior to becoming a musician, Lucy has now released three studio albums as well as collaborated with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker to form the supergroup "Boy Genius." This album see's the indie singer-songwriter drawing inspiration from her childhood as well as her teenage years. Many of the songs are inspired by actual diary entries that Lucy found herself re-reading on her first trip back to her hometown of Richmond Virginia. Dacus describes the experience as one in which she no longer recognized her former self, and wondered if her former self would approve of who she has become. This album is definitely raw and exposed like a heart on your sleeve. As Lucy describes in one track on this album, "it's embarrassing, the pulpy thing beating."
