M.I Abaga on Legacy, Purpose & Ageing Gracefully in Hip-Hop

On this episode, we sit down with M.I Abaga, the legendary African Rapper No. 1, to explore the remarkable journey of one of the most influential figures in Nigerian hip-hop.

From his early days as a rapper who shifted the continent’s sound, to his transformative years leading Chocolate City and shaping the careers of stars like Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, and CKay, M.I reflects on a career defined not only by timeless music but also by sacrifice. He opens up about guidance from his inner child and what it means to pursue purpose beyond fame, the challenge of ageing in hip-hop, the heartbreak of leaving Chocolate City, and how that moment of loss became a turning point for growth.

Two decades later, M.I’s voice remains a guide for what it means to build, to lead, and to last. Listen in as we unpack his legacy; and discover what it takes to leave your own.

Carnivores: Olamide vs Don Jazzy

Carnivores is a narrative podcast that explores the rivalries, conflicts, and cultural flashpoints that have shaped modern Nigerian society. Each episode unpacks one unforgettable beef—tracing its roots, players, and fallout. Through immersive storytelling, interviews, reenactments, and archival moments, Carnivores examines how these public feuds have impacted Nigerian Popular Culture.

Insightful, entertaining, and unflinching, Carnivores goes beyond the headlines to reveal the stories behind the fights.

Listen to other episodes of Carnivores on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

This episode reflects on the 2016 clash between two of Afrobeats' most revered kingmakers at the Headies Awards. The conflict started after Mavin Records’ Reekado Banks won the highly coveted “Next Rated” award over YBNL’s Lil Kesh—a decision Olamide felt was unjust. During his acceptance speech for another award, Olamide expressed his frustration with an expletive-laced outburst on stage.

Don Jazzy responded minutes later during his own speech, telling Olamide to "come and collect the car" if the award meant that much to him—a reference to the SUV traditionally given to the Next Rated winner. The moment stunned viewers and quickly spilled onto Twitter, where both stars continued trading insults in now-deleted tweets.

The feud was short-lived, though.

Let us know in the comments: who was the ultimate winner?

The Resurrection of Shake Body ft Skales

10 years since the release of Shake Body, the song that had parties in a roar with its crazy opening beat and infectious rhythm, it has seen a resurrection for the third time, proving once again that a hit never truly dies.

On this episode, Deji and Moyo speak to Skales about the renewed success of his breakout track. He takes us through an inspiring journey in music, from his days at EME to the painful exit that left him with nothing. Skales opens up about dealing with homelessness, navigating self-doubt, and how this one track remained a steady source of hope.

Skales’ story is one of resilience, faith, and grace. As he shared with us, “God’s will is what is important.”

Tune in for a truly special episode.
