About That Outdoor Job
Action Sports Translator, Martina Russo

Welcome to ⟪About that outdoor job⟫ podcast where host Charlaine Jannerfeldt has conversations with those who’ve made the outdoors their living, so you can too. We’ll share their insights, observations, advice and a few of their best adventure stories.

This is our first episode of our second series "Not your typical outdoor job".

In this episode she talks to Martina Russo about her not so typical outdoor job and how she got there. The "how" in Martina's case is also atypical having started as a freelance translator while moving from place to place to support herself. But that doesn't mean she sees herself as a "digital nomad" and she shared with us why not. Her personal frustration with Italian sport gear translation is what spurred her creation of the action sports translator and she shared how she managed to create what some would say is too niche of an outdoor job to succeed. And succeed she has whilst facing a number of challenges that come not only from growing a fully remote business and team but, as she candidly reveals, from lack of experience being part of any type of translation firm herself. Martina has some great advice for anyone considering following a path like hers.

Though she always knew she'd start her own company some day, doing so in the outdoor industry was not on her radar. Let alone the apparel industry. Raquel openly shared the challenges and difficulties she's face in a still "male and pale" sector but also what has made a difference in succeeding. Much of her great advice isn't only for the outdoor apparel industry but for anyone considering an entrepreneurial journey.
