Resident Labor Rights: Future Directions of Unionization
Join us for a discussion regarding the future directions of residency unionization! These podcast episodes are meant to follow up on our AAEM/RSA Resident Labor Rights panel discussion which took place live in New Orleans at Scientific Assembly and will be posted later. Please keep your eyes out for that recording to hear us discuss the basics of what a union is and its pros and cons. This three-part podcast series will build on those initial conversations. Here with us today is Dr. Anna Yap Dr. Yap is an Emergency Physician and Health Equity and Administration Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles. She currently serves as a California Medical Association Trustee and as the AMA Resident and Fellows Speaker of the House and was previously a regional vice president for the Committee of Interns and Residents. She has used her multidisciplinary background in marketing, education, and community building with medicine to advocate for patients and physicians since day one of medical school. As a leader in multiple organizations on the local, state, and national scale, she has worked for a safer and more equitable healthcare system that cares for the most vulnerable of individuals. She has been an active leader in the labor movement, helping to start a union, advocating for essential workers, and authoring legislation to improve the lives of trainees. In her “free” time, she enjoys exploring farmer’s markets, crocheting, improvised cooking, gaming, and absolutely not getting out of bed.

Resident Labor Rights: History of Unionization
Join us for a discussion regarding the history of residency unionization. These podcast episodes are meant to follow up on our AAEM/RSA Resident Labor Rights panel discussion which took place live in New Orleans at Scientific Assembly and will be posted later.  Please keep your eyes out for that recoding to hear us discuss the basics of what a union is and its pros and cons. This three-part podcast series will build on those initial conversations. Here with us today is Dr. Michael Losak Dr. Losak is a practicing emergency physician and currently an assistant professor at the Stanford School of Medicine.  While he was a resident at the University of California, San Francisco, he led the organizing committee that successfully won a new housestaff union there in 2017.  This union, a chapter of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR), was the largest new public sector union in California that year and also thought to be the largest new physician union in American history at the time of its founding.  He was subsequently elected to the national board of CIR, served as a member of the negotiating committee for the resident contracts at both UCSF and San Francisco General, and helped a number of other California housestaff with their successful organizing campaigns.  Since finishing residency, he has stayed involved with the healthcare labor space through writing, advising housestaff organizing committees, and engaging in local politics. Please feel free to reach out through info@aaemrsa.org with any questions regarding unionization efforts or for our guest speakers.

Resident Labor Rights: Unionizing A Residency
Join us for a discussion regarding residency unionization and the logistics which go into unionizing a residency and the bargaining that ensues following unionization. Here with us on the podcast today are Dr. Lena Carleton and Dr. Nikki Alberti Lena Carleton, MD is a third-year resident physician in Emergency Medicine & Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago. Lena was born and raised in Washington, DC, and seeing the inequities in her own city sparked a passion for social justice activism at a young age. It is this passion that ultimately led Lena to pursue a career in medicine. During her residency, Lena became one of the founding members of UIC’s resident physician union and has since been involved in bargaining and contract negotiation. She has spoken locally and nationally about her experiences as a union organizer, and her talk, “Organizing is the Best Medicine: The Past, Present, and Future of Resident Unions” won the “People’s Choice” Award at the 2022 EMRA 20 in 6 Resident Lecture Competition. Nikki Alberti, DO is a second-year resident physician in Emergency Medicine & Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago. She is from a small town in upstate New York, which is where she did undergrad. She then received her MPH from UVM and went to medical school in Philadelphia, which is where her spark for social justice, and thus unionization, was ignited. In the episode we discuss one of the largest resident unions and the union at these resident’s program – CIR or Committee of Interns and Residents. For more information about CIR, you can visit their website: https://www.cirseiu.org/who-we-are/ Please feel free to reach out through info@aaemrsa.org with any questions regarding unionization efforts or for our guest speakers.
