Anatomy Ulnar nerve course innervation

👑 The Ulnar Prince

Imagine there’s a prince called Ulnar who starts his journey from the castle (brachial plexus in the armpit) and travels all the way down the arm to take care of his kingdom (the hand).

🛤 The Prince’s Path:

1. He leaves the castle at the armpit.

2. He rides down the inside of the arm (like hugging close to the body).

3. At the elbow, he sneaks behind the funny bone (medial epicondyle) → that’s why you feel a zap when you hit it! ⚡

4. Then he goes down the forearm, hiding under a muscle called flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU).

5. Finally, he enters the hand through Guyon’s canal (like a secret tunnel).

⸻

🧙‍♂️ Prince Ulnar’s Magic Powers (Innervations):

In the Forearm 🦾

• He controls two soldiers only:

• Flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) → bends your wrist towards your little finger (like waving bye-bye). 👋

• Medial half of flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) → helps bend the ring and little fingers.

👉 All the other forearm muscles are ruled by his cousin, the Median Prince.

⸻

In the Hand 🤲 (his real kingdom!)

Prince Ulnar is called the “nerve of fine movements” because he makes your hand graceful like a dancer 💃

1. All small hand muscles EXCEPT 5 belong to Median nerve.

(So, Ulnar nerve = “All but 5”)

• The 5 Median ones are: LOAF (Lumbricals 1 & 2, Opponens pollicis, Abductor pollicis brevis, Flexor pollicis brevis superficial).

2. Ulnar controls:

• Hypothenar muscles → little finger dance moves 💅

• Interossei (palmar & dorsal) → clap, spread, and pinch fingers ✋🤏

• Medial 2 lumbricals (for ring & little finger writing grip). ✍️

• Adductor pollicis → brings thumb to the palm (key-holding muscle 🔑).

• Deep head of flexor pollicis brevis.

⸻

🎨 Sensation (Prince’s Kingdom Map)

• Front & back of little finger + half of ring finger → Ulnar’s land.

• Rest of the fingers? Belong to Median & Radial princes.

⸻

🧠 Memory Hacks:

• “Ulnar = Funny Bone Prince” → zaps at elbow. ⚡

• “Two in forearm, many in hand.”

• “All but 5” rule for hand muscles.

• “Ulnar = Fine movements, delicate control.”

⸻

So anytime you move your ring & little finger, spread your hand wide, or pinch a key, remember — that’s Prince Ulnar working hard for you 👑🤲
