71. Vertical Time

In this episode, I'll talk about the concept of Vertical Time which I first heard about in Jenny Odell's book Saving Time: Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock.

As she explains, there is Horizontal Time and Vertical Time.

Horizontal Time is driven by the clock as we know it. It says you need to be HERE at THIS time for the world to work. It's your 9-5 workday. It's your kid's school pick-up time. It's the daily structure of time that rules our lives. But then there is Vertical Time.

Vertical Time is open. It's uncommitted. It's unscheduled. It's not driven by the typical structure of a working day. And because it's not structured, our brains are free to wander. In this episode, I'll talk about why we need vertical time as artists and how to create more of it in your life.

66. Your Direction vs. Your Speed.

"Your direction is more important than your speed." Today's episode is inspired by a quote from writer, RL Evans (with my own creative interpretation). Are you prioritizing speed or direction in your creative life? And how does that show up? We'll talk through some examples of how this can look, and where you might be getting stuck.

65. The Panic Pivot.

"Is this the right idea? Is this the right path? Should I change directions completely?"

If you're asking these questions, you might be on the verge of what I call a PANIC PIVOT. This is super common for artists. We often think there is one golden project, one GOLDEN CHOICE, where there is no resistance, no stress, no troubleshooting, no self doubt, no politics, no shitty-ness along the way. We change our direction because we don't want to feel the discomfort of the messy middle and we want the immediate relief that comes with quitting.

In this episode I'll talk about how to identify a panic pivot, why we do it, and how to overcome it.

63. Why you're not reaching your creative goals.

When you try to reach a creative goal, what gets in the way? Is it your inner critic? A dip in confidence? A feeling of overwhelm or lack of a plan? In this episode, I will use the 5-stages of the creative process to identify 5 goal-setting pitfalls: obligation, focus, moving the "goal post," setting too many goals, and emphasizing motion vs. action. Tune in for some structure and next steps to help you move out of stuckness.

62. How to set goals you actually want.

In this first episode of our goal-setting series, we'll talk about how to set goals you actually want vs. goals you think you should want. We have a lot of competing priorities as artists - making work, showing work, selling work, paying bills etc. It can be hard to sort through what deserves our attention and what we actually want for our creative lives. In this episode, I'll give you a framework for thinking about fulfillment, and an exercise to get you started in setting meaningful goals.

61. Motivation.

Why do you make creative work? What motivates you? When I ask artists this question, I get a range of answers: "It feels good to get a sale" or "I love the feedback" or "I like being invited to participate in shows." In this episode I talk about the difference between results and motivation. It's super easy to confuse them, but results and motivation are different. I'll talk about how they're different, why we need to separate them, and an exercise that can help you reflect on what motivates you to make your work.

60. Self-doubt.

Self-doubt is something all artists struggle with. In this episode, we'll talk about a helpful framework for thinking about self-doubt courtesy of Rick Rubin's book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being. Rubin notes there's a distinction between doubting yourself and doubting your work. One doubt is helpful, the other is not. I'll share an exercise to help you understand how this shows up in your practice and what you can do about it.

59. The Idea Funnel.

When we're working on a large, ambitious project, it's easy to get overwhelmed with challenges. We have a million questions around HOW we're going to make the project happen. Seeing all our questions at once can make the project feel impossible. The secret is having a STRUCTURE for addressing our questions. We need to know what questions to address and WHEN. This is where the idea funnel comes in. In this episode I'll explain the 4-stages of what I call, the idea funnel: 1. Idea Chaos > 2. Focus > 3. Mechanics > 4. Execution. I'll explain how to use it to make your big scary project feel more manageable.
