9ES (aka The 9to5 Entertainment System) has been providing a bi-weekly dose of pop culture and current events since 2011. Montreal geeks Keith, Scott and Jon get together every two weeks to talk about movies, comics, video games and the occasional smattering of conspiracy theories. From Hollywood blockbusters to indie gems, the 9to5 crew seem to digest way too much media for their own good. 9ES is also home of "The List" an ever growing list of movies across all eras and genres meticulously ranked by the crew. Is it a perfect ranking? Yes. We think so.

9ES 349: Fred Savage & Harvey Keitel
Two out of three of us are dads here on 9ES. When is it ok to show Zach Cregger’s Weapons to your kid? 12? 13 years old?
When is it ok to show Thanatomorphose to your kid? Probably never?
Weapons was pretty great and I can’t wait for Jono to watch Barbarian so we can dutifully compare and contrast. If Zach Cregger was a recording artist, Weapons would be an excellent second album. Which we know from many, many subpar sophomore albums is still quite the accomplishment. Barbarian is still the original though, the first break out into the world of horror film making and I think Weapons may suffer slightly from having too many echoes of Barbarian to truly break out and stand on its own.
Still definitely worth the watch though, don’t get me wrong.
As you do towards the end of October we watched a bunch of other horror movies. Scott showed Prince of Darkness to his kid which is exciting, while I watched Oddity, Wolf Man and started into Welcome to Derry. Tis the season after all. Finally we wonder out loud if Stephen King is the most recognizable author on the planet.
We will return to (slightly) less horror-centric content next episode probably. Maybe.
Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time we talk about Stephen King some more while we talk about Edgar Wright’s upcoming take on The Running Man. Keith has made it to The Trial of Magneto as he plows through Marvel’s Krakoan Age and that leads us to talk about the X-Men.

9ES348: Close To The Vest
Tron is a weird franchise and Tron: Ares just continues the weirdness. From what I’ve read, none of the three movies were considered hits for Disney. But somehow three of them have been made and they made a really expensive roller coaster to celebrate the franchise in Disneyworld. Hard to figure out the actual numbers but allegedly it was in the same price range as the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ride and that cost $500 million USD.

That’s a lot of money for Tron.
So, Tron: Ares.

OG Tron:
Budget $17 million
Box office $50 million[1]

Tron: Legacy:
Budget $170 million[5][6]
Box office $409.9 million[6]

Tron: Ares
Deadline Hollywood reported a total cost of $347.5 million, including production and advertising, for the film and estimated that it ultimately should lose over $132 million.

Whoopsie!

Meanwhile, you know what else involved a lot of money? The Riyadh Comedy Festival.

We didn’t have the Marc Maron quote on the show, but here it is in all its glory:
“I mean, how do you even promote that? “From the folks that brought you 9/11. Two weeks of laughter in the desert, don’t miss it!” I mean, the same guy that’s gonna pay them is the same guy that paid that guy to bone-saw Jamal Khashoggi and put him in a fucking suitcase. But don’t let that stop the yuks, it’s gonna be a good time!”

You’re a legend Mr. Maron.

Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time you won’t believe it but Jon and Keith talk more about Silksong! For the last time! Both of them are sitting at 100% game completion so they finally get it all out of their system… until the inevitable DLC is released. Keith also went to the Pounding the Pavement exhibit on now at the McCord Museum in Montreal (until October 26 so you’re probably already too late) and Scott wrestled a coyote.

9ES347: FIRE MOVIE BURN
Credit where credit is due: We did not cook up the “firewatch challenge” but rather Scott listened to them do it over on the Confused Breakfast podcast and thought it was a good idea. And guess what, it was!

I went into the exercise thinking I might make a few bold choices here and there but at the end the day I think we all more or less decided to stick to comfort food. Movies we’ve watched over and over again already and safe bets to keep our mental sanity in check for 12 months of relative isolation.

It probably won’t surprise you that a number of films on The List feature pretty prominently although there are some glaring absences. Also, if you listened to last episode’s Garbage Time you’ll remember that 1999 might be the best year ever in cinema and that holds true here as well.

To remind you, here are the rules for our take on the “Firewatch Challenge”:

We each have been assigned to an isolated fire tower in Northern Quebec.

We can “rent” one movie a month and it will be the only thing we can watch on our crummy little televisions.

If we try to rent the same movie as one of the other hosts the other hosts will sub in a movie they deem to be close enough.

There are no special features on any of the movies.

We have access to a “little bit” of weed if we want it, but only really in the summer months.

Wrestling Pay-Per-Views are allowed.

Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time you won’t believe it but Jon and Keith talk more about Silksong. Keith took a bit of a break and Jon is definitely right at the end game. We also take a look at the White Wolf 5th Edition Humble Bundle deal that’s going on right now.

9ES346: A Big Stand
I guess we’ll never know whether or not Disney suspended Jimmy Kimmel just to make some noise and piss people off or something but boy is it a wild time for free speech.

You know you’re getting pretty crazy when Joe Rogan looks at what you’re doing and is like “yeah – this is a little crazy.” Ted Cruz and Joe Rogan being voices of reason is a pretty clear sign you’ve done something pretty messed up.

Anyways, free speech reigns forever on the 9to5 Entertainment System!

They will never silence our right to… umm.. Talk about the Spiderman movie from 25 years ago? Never I say!

Jono watched the James Gunn Superman flick and I think we will only probably talk about it once more after Scott watches it. I still don’t understand how Scott hasn’t watched Peacemaker yet, but that’s another story.

We also finish up setting the rules for the “Firewatch Challenge” and I’m going to type them out here:

We each have been assigned to an isolated fire tower in Northern Quebec.

We can “rent” one movie a month and it will be the only thing we can watch on our crummy little televisions.

If we try to rent the same movie as one of the other hosts the other hosts will sub in a movie they deem to be close enough.

Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time Jon and Keith talk about Silksong some more because it’s really the only video game that matters anymore. Keith watched a documentary about Devo on Netflix and Scott watched a documentary about how 1982 was one of the best years in cinema history. We quickly decide that 1999 was even better.

9ES345: Not Positive In The End
Jon and Keith played the heck out the original Hollow Knight when it came out and even if they haven’t been full blown participants of the Silksong hype they both were excited enough to get Silksong on launch day.
It’s great. If you’re bad at it then get good and you shall be rewarded.

This is a pretty “tight” episode by our standards. We talk about the biggest video game release of the year (Silksong), a movie that is still in theaters (Fantastic Four: First Steps), another relatively recent film (The Phoenecian Scheme) and a movie that is about to get released this week (The Long Walk). We also talk about some up to the minute politics and Trump’s creepy ass letter to Epstein in the infamous “Birthday Book”.

Sometimes we talk about the 80s and sometimes we talk about stuff happening right now. What do you want from us?

Oh and by the way, we don’t talk about it on the show but if you listened to last episode and wondered how Syko Stu is doing, apparently he’s been released from the hospital and is miraculously expected to recover. Fucking wild.

Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time Keith has watched the entirety of Twisted Metal Season 2 and it was pretty great in a silly popcorn kind of way. The boys discuss the rules of the “Firewatch Movie Challenge” that will be featured on an upcoming episode of 9ES and Scott started watching Alien: Earth. Hot fresh garbage!

9ES 344: Watch With Anticipation
Note: This episode is a little (a lot) late because of some unexpected technical hiccups! Whoops!
So Rampage Jackson’s son Raja Jackson jumped into a wrestling ring and slammed Syko Stu into the ground and then delivered 23 unprotected headshots to his unconscious body. Oh and he streamed the whole thing live because it’s 2025.
It’s wild to me that there are wrestlers defending Raja Jackson here but I’m not surprised. Wrestlers are fucking weird.
I guess it’s kind of nice that Rampage Jackson has come around to the fact that his son is a piece of shit?
“”I feel bad about what happened to Syko Stu,” Jackson remarked. “I don’t condone what my son did at all. . . . I’m a father, so I gotta have my son’s back, but I’m gonna let justice play out — take its course. . . . I hope one day I can meet Syko Stu and shake his hand and have a man-to-man with him.
“. . . I hope Syko Stu can forgive me, as a dad, for not understanding everything. Let’s see what happens from here.”
While we talk about this, Jon briefly unpacks the streaming platform “Kick” which honestly the more I learn about the more I hate.
The French streamer that Jon talks about died only a few days before the Raja Jackson incident. Even though that’s just a Wikipedia link you may not want to go down that clickhole. Gnarly stuff.
Anyways, it’s not all doom and gloom. We also talk about the Expulsion of the Acadians by the British Army in 1755. Wait, that’s still doom and gloom isn’t it?
Whatever man, Jono walked on the edge of the CN Tower and Silksong is finally coming out. See? Good things DO happen.
Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time Scott talks about introducing his son to horror films. He showed the kiddo Alien and Aliens which lead (naturally) into a full re-watch of Stranger Things. We then wonder if the final season will be any good and Scott thinks the internet has turned on Millie Bobby Brown. Whatever, Keith pre-ordered that Hellfire D&D module since he thinks it will be cool to sit on his shelf. Don’t tell Sarah.

9ES 343: Other Realities IN The Reality
The Montreal podcast that deep dives into very particular eras of X-Men comics has returned with your bi-weekly dose of nerdy ass shenanigans.
We kicked off with my festival marathon: Osheaga and ÎleSoniq back-to-back, five days of crowds, dancing, and metro hell. Pro tip: alternate shoes and insoles, or your feet will revolt after 100k steps (dancing not included).
No Jono around means there’s nobody to stop Scott and I from talking a LOT about comics. We geeked out on X-Men tropes, mutant madness, and the Krakoa era: resurrection drama, timey-wimey futures and that bonkers “X of Swords” tournament scattering across titles. Weirdly Scott decides to ship Jean Grey and Steve Rogers and I don’t hate it.
Scott also starts fancasting Excalibur mostly from the Ted Lasso cast: Phil Dunster as Captain Britain, Juno Temple as Meggan and Heather Waddingham as Saturnyne.
I told you this was a nerdy one.
Meanwhile: ChatGPT-5 dropped unannounced, killing old models and your “clanker” buddies. It’s drier, sloppier, sacrifices accuracy for speed—devastating if you’re using it for therapy, RPGs, or brainstorming like Scott.
Finally, presumably out of fear that we were going to make him watch it for a “Best Movie Ever” – Scott watched Amazon’s “War of the Worlds”—Ice Cube as a solo analyst fighting data-eating aliens via socials and drones. Is it as bad as the internet says? Yes and no.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time, Scott and I dig into some of the worst powers in Marvel comics sticking with our comic book theme. I genuinely feel like we might have done this before but I don’t remember some of the characters were spoke about so maybe it was a different list? Who knows, man? 9ES342: Demons Everywhere
Well, The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie is out, and it’s the most comic-accurate yet. Reed Richards is scribbling on chalkboards, tackling cosmic problems like it’s Oppenheimer with spandex. Sue’s stubborn, Ben’s mopey, Johnny’s a hothead. Honestly it’s pretty much straight out of the comics. But it’s a lot of talking heads and some folks (like Keith’s wife) dozed off. Galactus is massive and rocks the Kirby helmet, and they skip the origin story.

Skipping the origin story is kind of our favorite thing in superhero movies these days.
Ironheart reveals that Sacha Baron Cohen is the MCU Mephisto. Feels like they’re testing the waters of introducing Marvel Hell.
Scott pitches a few casting choices for Mr. Sinister: Tom Ellis (Lucifer) or Robert Sheehan (Umbrella Academy) as the fabulous mutant. Both would kill it.
On a heavier note (GET IT?), Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan are dead.
Since we are jaded assholes we end up ranking them out of 10 on scumbag scale. Ozzy, allegedly shot 17 pets in a drug-fueled haze. That ain’t great. But he’s a rock star so maybe a 4/10 on the scumbag scale.
Hogan, though? Terry Bollea’s a pretty big scumbag. He and Vince McMahon built modern wrestling. But his union-busting, steroid cover-ups, and MAGA-adjacent nonsense peg him at a 7/10 scumbag. Hulk Hogan was a living superhero, Terry Bollea pretty much sucked.
Meanwhile on a brand new episode of Garbage Time! Scott once again has whipped up a quiz for Jon and Keith and this time it’s “Sports Movies”. The rules are simple, Scott gives us the name of a fictional sports team and if we can’t guess the movie he will then tell us the star player of the team. Jon and Keith are not big sports guys but you may be surprised by some of the right answers they manage to land on (and infuriated at some of the ones they miss).

9ES341: Best of the Best
One has to wonder if there’s the possibility of a Wu-Tang Clan crossover with the Predator franchise. In Predator: Killer of Killers they explore the idea that if you manage to kill a Yautja they come for you and bring you back to their home planet. Would a Predator be able to survive The 36 Chambers?

I would read that comic.

I remember a time in this podcast where conspiracy theories were kind of like a fun little thought experiment where we would all go “yeah, wouldn’t THAT be crazy” but these days it’s hard to get excited about tinfoil hats when every crackpot idea seems not only plausible but downright likely.

Don’t go falling out of any windows.

We wrap the show up by talking a little about the staged but very real violence that Hangman Adam Page and Jox Moxley engaged in over the weekend at AEW All-In. From Bleacher Report:
“Page drew first blood by repeatedly stabbing Moxley in the head with a fork. It was a brutal scene because you could see the wound opening up as it happened. There was no hiding it. It’s not like they showed some hits and then Mox had time to use a blade. It was the fork doing all the damage.”

ART.

Meanwhile – over on Garbage Time, Scott prepared a list of obscure aliens to quiz Jon and Keith about their knowledge of aliens. It’s a good time. We also talk about the upcoming films Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps. Honestly you should at least head over to the Patreon just to take a look at the episode image Scott whipped up for this one, it’s dope. Does it say something about the current political climate that we would much rather devote a good chunk of our time talking about the Hundred Years’ War of the late Middle-Ages than current events?

I think it does. Anyways, war has always been crazy and we’re always getting better at it, fun!

Scott really, really wants you to watch “Alligator” from 1980 and he’s probably in the right for doing so. Honestly, I watched the trailer and I kind of wish I hadn’t on account of the spoilers. Going into such a triumphant looking creature feature blind is probably the way to go.

Also, when we talk about the scene in Batman Forever where Robin does his laundry with kung-fu or whatever it really must be seen to be believed. Trust me.

I still think Batman Forever is a lot of fun and I’m honestly considering revisiting Batman and Robin to find out if it actually swings so far into being terrible that might it come out the other side as actually fun and good. It probably doesn’t but maybe time has been kind to it?

Time will not be kind to that Snow White remake though. It’s awful.

Meanwhile  – over on Garbage Time, we talk about how important soundtracks can be for movies and how the late 90s and early 2000s were a golden age of movie soundtracks. Obviously that gets us talking about the Spawn movie. We talk about shifting heroes around in the Marvel and DC Comics universe and close it off with some podcast recommendations. After months of teasing the subject we finally have all gotten on the same page and watched Hot Rod. Will this bring an end to the Hot Rod content that has been creeping into almost every episode for what feels like months? Maybe.

Maybe not.

Of course since we all watched it we also get to put it on The List and its ranking may surprise you. That is if you are capable of being surprised.

Talking about Hot Rod makes us all pretty nostalgic so we also talk about things that are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year. REJECTED by Don Hertzfeldt is incredibly 25 years old next month and Yacht Rock celebrates its 20th Anniversary this month. Yes we talked about Yacht Rock last week on Garbage Time but now we talk about it on the main show. I swear we say different things about it.

In case you were wondering – we are old and we like old things. None of us know what cheugy means and my wife stared at me blankly when I yelled “Chicken Jockey” and lit our house on fire.

If you’re actually reading this, it means you care enough to read the show notes. If you care that much then please take another 30 seconds and leave a rating and review of 9ES wherever you listen to us. We’d appreciate it. Apparently it helps.

Meanwhile – over on Garbage Time, we talk about the shocking re-hiring of of R-Truth by WWE, Keith started Last of Us Season 2 and saw Justice at Place Bell. Scott is fed up with zombies but he’ll still probably watch 28 Years Later. Oh and there’s a new Knives Out movie coming out. First of all let’s get the most important thing out of the way shall we? Listen to Scott as “The Thing” in Fantastic Four: Super Skrull right now on YouTube!

Do it – go on, we’ll still be here when you get back I promise.

Let’s get the record straight since maybe it wasn’t clear – The Birds and Birdemic are not the same. Part of me is actually deeply worried that the creator of Birdemic (whose name I will not be looking up) really does think he made the spiritual sequel to “The Birds” and it’s deeply upsetting.

I’m not sure how or why exactly but we get into the fact that Indiana Jones is a little like Drake. He “likes ‘em young”. Indy’s pushing 40 in Temple of Doom, and he’s got eyes for Willie Scott, who’s barely out of her 20s. Then there’s Marion in Raiders—she was *checks notes* a teenager when they first hooked up, and he was, what, late 20s? Why did George Lucas want to keep that in the script so badly?

So I did a little digging thanks to the Wayback Machine and apparently this oral history was published in issue 208 of a magazine called “Empire” and it was actually Karen Allen who had a whole story in mind for when Marion was 15 years old. Still pretty fucking weird.
“Allen: I had a whole history for the character from the time she was born. What happened to her mother, how long she’d been in Nepal and her romance with Indy when she was 15 or 16. I remember showing it to Steven who said, “That’s an entirely different movie.“

Anyways, Scott and Keith watched Captain America: Brave New World and it pretty damn bland but also kind of fine.

Keith is making his way through the Final Destination franchise – he’s watched the first 3 so it’s downhill from here! (At least until Bloodlines which is apparently actually amazing).

Meanwhile – over on Garbage Time, we talk about the special place that Yacht Rock has in our hearts and souls, the shocking release of R-Truth from WWE and of course language laws that our bonkers in our beautiful home province of Quenec. 9ES337: Determined Nondeterminism
It seems that every single year around this time we get to have an episode devoted to the postseason demise of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It also seems like there is always a fun new statistic available to dunk on the Maple Leafs in whole new ways.

This year? It’s that Brad Marchand is hilariously 5-0 against the Maple Leaf in Game 7. That doesn’t seem possible. But it’s the Maple Leafs, so of course it is. Or how about how there is now talk of blowing up the team and “retooling” or whatever but they have ZERO first round draft picks until 2028? That’s right, for the next three drafts the Maple Leafs will not have a first round pick. They went all in on this team and this team cannot get the job done.

Anyways, since we were having too much fun dunking on the Maple Leafs we decided to take things down a notch by talking about Kanye West being a Nazi, P Diddy being a disgusting human being and the Hockey Canada Trial that is also pretty disgusting. Can’t be having too much fun out there.

Keith also saw Thunderbolts* and it was pretty good.

Meanwhile  – over on Garbage Time, we talk about Daredevil: Born Again, the Krakoan Age comics and the “Three Body Problem” on Netflix. This naturally leads to Jono proving that free will exists by virtue of physics. Bet you weren’t expecting that now were you? Finally, we fantasy cast the FaceOff sequel that we all so desperately need. 9ES336: Hot Rods Plot
It’s wild to me that after years and years of terrible vampire movies we’ve been treated to two great ones in the last few months. First “Nosferatu” in December and now Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners”. Is this the renaissance that vampire aficionados like the three of us have been waiting for? Let’s hope so.

So yeah, “Sinners” is great and I very much love the idea that ownership of the movie will revert back to Ryan Coogler in 20 years. Honestly that should be normalized. I know studios will hate it but screw that. Coogler wrote, produced and directed “Sinners” – he deserves to eventually own it. More of that please.

Speaking of “Sinners”, we take a look at the movies coming out this summer and boy oh boy is that a pile of remakes and sequels. I guess I should be happy that we got one great brand new movie to kick off blockbuster season because for the next few months it’s remake and sequel after reboot.

Also – minor correction for those of you who read the show notes: Constantine 2 isn’t coming out until 2026. Sorry to get your (and my) hopes up for the one sequel I truly care about.

Meanwhile – over on Garbage Time, we talk about the NHL Playoffs and get into the dark, dark place of the Hockey Canada trial. We lighten things up a little afterwards by talking about the Bad Lieutenant movies and the Jono teaches us all about conquistadors! And how awesome the Aztecs are:  https://mattlakeman.org/2020/06/25/polygamy-human-sacrifices-and-steel-why-the-aztecs-were-awesome/

How far we have fallen. As predicted the NDP now have less than 10 seats which I only found out today is the lowest number of seats they’ve ever had since they became a party. Tommy Douglas is rolling in his grave.

All three of us probably enjoyed the 2007 film “Hot Rod” more than most people. I was an OG Lonely Island fan so I’m one of the few people who even saw it in theaters (I may have even been at an advance screening if I remember correctly). It’s certainly not for everyone, but it is certainly for us.

Honestly that’s most of what we talk about in this episode. Hot Rod and the Canadian Election. The Canadian Election and Hot Rod. Perhaps those two things are not so different? Now I want to see Mark Carney punch dance.

Anyways – over on Garbage Time, we play a game of “Fuck, Marry, Kill” with the main-event wrestlers of Night 1 of WrestleMania Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and CM Punk. Our answers will shock you! Maybe. We then discuss how we should make meme movies and finally we get into the NHL Playoffs and the Montreal Canadiens. 9ES 334: There’s Very Little Daredevil in this Daredevil
Montreal’s favorite geek and pop culture podcast 9ES is back to talk about the Chicken Jockey trend, the stupid AI Studio Ghibli trend, the Canadian election, Daredevil: Born Again and so much more. Of course it’s only natural that we start the episode off about how my brother now kind of sounds like Kieran Culkin after he recovered from Covid. Topical!
I really can’t express enough how happy the “Chicken Jockey” trend makes me. We talk a little bit in the episode how it seems like relatively harmless fun and pales in comparison to some of the horror stories we heard back in the day during showings of the first Jackass movie. Well, clearly the kids of today heard us trash talk their shenanigans and things have… escalated. Check this video out for clips of people sneaking in a live chicken and setting off actual fireworks in the movie theatre. Yet it still makes me happy. Why? Maybe I’m just happy these Mindcraft nerds are getting out of the house and doing something real for once in their lives, ok?
Meanwhile, the fast we move on from the AI Studio Ghibli trend the better. You know it’s a super cool fun trend when the White House is in on the trend showing a picture of a woman being deported. Fun and cool!
Finally, I’m catching up on Daredevil: Born Again over on Disney+ and I’m not really sure why it pissed people off. It’s good. You should watch it. It feels a lot like the Netflix Daredevil series which was easily one of the best Marvel things around. Maybe I’ll be finished it by the time next episode rolls around? Or maybe not.
Meanwhile – over on Garbage Time, we talk quite a bit of hockey talk. From the Montreal Canadiens playoff aspirations to Alex Ovechkin now holding the NHL all time goal-scoring title. To offset all the sports talk we then talk about House of X and Powers of X and you won’t believe how you’re supposed to pronounce “Powers of X” considering it’s an X-Men book. 9ES 333: The Big Sweepy Sweep
We know why you listen to the 9to5 Entertainment System – you want to know what we think about the Oscar Best Picture winner Anora and whether or not you can watch it with your mom.
Just kidding, we kick off the show by talking about how Pierre Polievre looks like Ditto from Detective Pikachu trying to look like a human:

I’m now pretty convinced that the leader of the Conservative party is a Pokémom trying to infiltrate our government.
The answer to the first question is probably a no, by the way. The first hour or so of Anora has a lot of sex. Like, more than you think. Ask yourself “Do I want to watch the son of a Russian oligarch and an exotic dancer do a lot of drugs and have a lot of sex with my mom?” and then make that decision for yourself.
From now on my own personal measure of success will be based on Jim Carrey getting the script for Sonic 3 printed on gold. Someone will be like “hey, we want you to play in our Dungeons & Dragons game” and I will say “only if you give me a character sheet made of real gold.” And then THEY WILL.
Anyways – over on Garbage Time, Scott talks about the challenges of writing a script for an audio drama that hopefully sees the light of day one of these days (hopefully he edits it himself). We also talk about how the future of war should definitely be more like Robot Jox and less like tariffs. Then we talk about the Olsen sisters for much longer than you expect. 9ES332: Now Lets See Paul Atreides Card
9ES is back at full strength to talk about comics, movies and video games old and new like Mickey 17, Dune 2, Street Fighter 2: Turbo, Mortal Kombat 2 and of course the appointment of our new Prime Minister Mark Carney.

♪”One of these things is not like the other…”♫

Politics and pop culture combine! Form of podcast!

I think we talk about The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl once every 10 episodes or so and with good reason. She’s such a weird part of the Marvel Universe that is pretty much delightful every time. Honestly if you’re a fan of Marvel weirdness you should do yourself a favour and check out Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show! It’s only a handful of episodes and well worth your time.

You know what’s maybe not worth your time? The latest from Bong Joon-Ho “Mickey 17”. Mickey 17, frankly, is a movie with too many ideas. I will always have time for people making weird movies and even more so when they’re high profile. A recent Oscar winning director and Batman himself teaming up to make a weird movie about space exploration and printing out expendable humans should be my jam but it fell a little flat. Apparently it’s coming out as early as next week on streaming so maybe you’ll have the chance to judge for yourself sooner than later.

Anyways – over on Garbage Time, the gang reminisces about what it was like to wake up hungover in unfamiliar parts of Montreal and figuring out how to get home on public transport in the era before smartphones. We’ve also watched a couple of indie horror flicks like One Cut of the Dead and Companion and a few podcast recommendations for sleepytime listening. 9ES 331: He Just Has to Punch Nazis
Once again we manage to mostly avoid talking about the madness going on as Trump flails wildly, lashing out in every direction like an old man losing his marbles and yelling at clouds even as he clutches the nuclear football like a Teddy Ruxpin while he sleeps. Instead we talk about the Oscars!
But wait, have we seen any of the movies celebrated at the Oscars? Well, we’ve seen some so there’s that. Unfortunately the Scar Princess or whatever Zack Snyder called that Star Wars ripoff wasn’t even nominated for any Oscars so our area of expertise got quite a bit more narrow.
Don’t worry, we go back to the well of Marvel comic books and movies in the back half and I’m actually kind of excited for the new Thunderbolts movie. I do think Marvel has inadvertently made the Thunderbolts the new main characters of the MCU and as a fan of the series I’m here for it.
As I mention in the show, you should really check out the good stuff being put out over at Second Wind and The Backdrop’s take on Captain America: Brave New World is as good a place to start as any.
Anyways – over on Garbage Time, Scott and Keith discuss all the things going on for the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary. The show is absolutely an institution and even if it may have generated more bland content than bangers, you can absolutely not discount how hard some of the bangers banged. That’s right. Take a trip down SNL memory lane with Keith and Scott on this week’s Garbage Time.  If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated.

9ES330: The Least You Can Do Is Always Nothing
Well we did it, we pretty much made it through a full episode without getting tempted to talk about whatever the hell Trump is up to this second. And we do it the most Canadian way possible: by talking about hockey! It’s the “4 Nations Face-Off” and what started as a glorified extension of the All-Star Game has become a pretty interesting tournament.

Let’s ignore the fact that the 4 Nations Face-Off has also (of course) become political and the head coach of Team USA wants Trump to be at the game tonight or whatever.

We also skirt the presidency a little when we talk about plane crashes and why there are so many of them lately. Though truth be told I am pretty impressed that you can flip a plane and blow the wings off and not kill anyone. Kind of makes me feel better about flying while all these planes are crashing honestly.

We wrap up the second half of the episode talking about a few movies we’ve seen lately. Scott watched Marlowe with Liam Neeson and Keith went to the real movie theaters to watch Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. You won’t believe which one had more cool vampire action!

Anyways – over on Garbage Time Scott and Keith talk about whether or not Guy Ritchie has lost his cool as they discuss The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and then we talk about Kendrick Lamar and the SuperBowl. I love it when we talk about football during the “Garbage Time” portion of the show. 9to5 Entertainment System (9ES)
