Onomatopoeia- Feelings

Hello Podcast listeners. Welcome back to 3-minute Japanese.

In this episode, we are going to focus on the onomatopoeia words that express feelings and emotions.

Here we go!

ニコニコするis to smile

ウキウキ derives from the word 浮く, which means to float. 「ウキウキする」means you are on cloud nine. You are happy and excited.

ゾクゾクするmeans to shiver or get chills whether from a cold, fear, or excitement.

イライラするis to get irritated or feeling frustrated.

ムカムカするis to feel queasy or nauseated. The feeling comes from your gut. It also expresses anger and frustration. In casual conversations, you hear 「ムカつく」 quite often.

びっくりするis to be surprised.

クヨクヨするis to mope or to worry

メソメソするis to be weepy and sobby

How many did you remember?

Ok, that’s it for today… No! I’m only kidding.

Let’s use some examples and go over these words one by one.

“That teacher is always smiling.”

“I’m feeling excited as I am going on a trip tomorrow where we go from one hot spring to another.”

“The song Thriller by Michael Jackson gives me shivers every time I hear it.”

“I was quite frustrated when I was caught in a traffic jam yesterday.”

“I have an upset stomach from a hangover.”

“The words coming out of this person’s mouth are harsh, and they piss me off.”

“My dog hides under the bed shaking with fear when he hears thunder.”

“It’s a waste of time moping about my failure.”

“My son was weeping from a fall, but his face quickly lightened up with a smile when he saw an ice cream shop.

That’s it for today. Thank you for listening.
