Hello, everyone. Welcome or welcome back to 3-minute Japanese. Today’s topic is money. Money is so deeply rooted in our lives from young age. Some of us may have learned the role and meaning of money through board games such as Monopoly, and video games such as Super Mario Brothers or through allowance we received from our parents in real life. Some people instinctively ace the game of money and have a large list of things they can buy, and a lot of people are just getting by, others are sadly scraping by. So what is money? We learn about the origin of a currency system, where people started using tokens instead of barter exchange. I often hear the following: Money is a tool. Money is energy. Time is money. Money is a store of value. I won’t go too deep on the philosophical route about money here, but I would like to make space to think about money in the next few series as its form is constantly changing, whether that’s credit cards, digital currency, or cryptocurrency. The form of making a living is also changing, especially in the past couple of years thanks to the modern technology. That’s it for today. In the next episode, we will talk about “o” in “okane”, the word for money in Japanese. Stay tuned.
