お金の「お」 - honorific “o”
ポッドキャストをお聞きの皆さん、こんにちは。3分日本語のお時間です。 Hello, everyone. Welcome or welcome back to 3-minute Japanese. 前回予告した通り、お金について考えていきたいと思います。 今回のサブテーマは、お金の「お」です。「お」は美化語と言われ、丁寧さを表す接頭辞です。「お」は名詞、動詞、形容詞、あるいはフレーズの前に使われますが、今回は「お」+名詞の例を挙げたいと思います。なお、美化語は「お」の他に「ご」がありますが、今回は割愛させていただきます。 As I mentioned in the previous episode, I am talking about money. The sub-topic of the day is the prefix, “o” used in front of “kane”. The “o” is called an honorific prefix, which makes its following word polite. The prefix can precede a noun, verb, adjective, or a phrase. In this episode, I will only focus on nouns in the examples. I would also like to note that there is another honorific prefix, which is “go”. But this will not be mentioned in this episode. 「お」がつく美化語は、エピソードの最後にご紹介したいと思います。さて、お金に視点を戻しましょう。 Examples of honorific prefix will be cited at the end of the episode, but let’s draw our attention back to money. 私たちは普段、カネではなく、お金と言います。「お金」と言った方が断然丁寧です。そして、お金に対する敬意もうかがえます。さらに、文面上において、金「キン」と金「カネ」の区別をつける役割もあります。 The kanji for money is the same character as gold and is pronounced “kane” when describe as money, and “kin” as gold. We usually say “okane” instead of “kane” to express politeness, and possibly to express some respect towards money. It also plays an important role in distiguishing the word gold “kin” and money “kane”. お金とカネの違い。「お金」は一般的に使われ、特にカタカナ表示の「カネ」はどこかマイナスなイメージがつきます。 There is a difference in nuance between “okane” and “kane”. It’s more common to say “okane” than “kane”. The latter often has a negative implication about money. 「お」がつく名詞をいくつかご紹介いたします。 Here are the words with the honorific “o” お金 – money お財布 – wallet お札 – paper bill お寿司 – sushi お任せ – chef’s choice (it means “leaving up to you”) おもてなし – hospitality お酒 – sake お箸 – chopsticks お祭り – festivals お菓子 – snacks お手洗い – restrooms はい、今日はここまでです。次回は、漢字の観点からお金を考えたいと思います。お楽しみに。 That’s it for today. In the next episode, we would like to look at money from kanji, Chinese characters. Stay tuned.
