美國著名作家馬克吐溫 Mark Twain，被喻為美國文學之父，並有「幽默大師」的美譽，過去有不少的名人或作家包括尼采、達爾文、魯迅、大江健三郎、甘迺迪總統等等都是他的讀者。他的短篇小說集《他是否尚在人間：馬克吐溫幽默故事集》收集了不少他的名篇，包括成名作《卡拉維拉斯縣的名跳蛙》、《他是否尚在人間》、《火車上的人吃人》和《我怎樣編農業報》等。
他擅長諷刺社會時弊，以至對人性有各種的批評，大多尖銳而精準到位，讓讀者大笑之餘也不乏反思的空間。
