हम अखबार पढ़ते हैं ताकि कोई निंदा रस मिल जाए जरा किसी की निंदा हो रही हो तो हम चौकन्ने होकर सुनने लगते हैं कैसे ध्यान मग्न हो जाते हैं अगर कोई आकर बताएं कि पड़ोसी की स्त्री किसी के साथ भाग गई है बस दुनियादारी भूल जाते हैं उस बात पर इतना ध्यान लगाते हैं कि उससे और पूछते हैं खुद खुद के पूछने लगते हैं कि कुछ और तो कहो कुछ आगे तो बताओ विस्तार से बताओ जरा ऐसे संक्षिप्त न बताओ कहां भागे जा रहे हो पूरी बात बता कर जाओ बैठो चाय पी लो हम उसके लिए पलक पावडे बिछा देते हैं अपने बच्चों को कहते हैं कुर्सी लाना जहां भी हमें लगता है कि निंदा हो रही है वहां पर हमें रस आता है हमें रस इसलिए आता है क्योंकि दूसरा आदमी छोटा किया जा रहा है और उसके छोटे होने में हमें भीतरी संतुष्टि मिलती है कि मैं बड़ा हो रहा हूं इसलिए अगर कोई भिखारी रास्ते पर केले के छिलके पर पैर फिसल कर गिर जाए तो हमें इतना रस नहीं आता जितना रस कोई संभ्रांत व्यक्ति केले के छिलके पर फिसल कर गिर पड़े तो आये। दिल खुश हो जाता है
“मैं उसके बिना जिन्दा नहीं रह सकती!” उन्होंने फैसला किया।
“तो मर जाओ!” जी चाहा कह दूँ। पर नहीं कह सकती। बहुत से रिश्ते हैं, जिनका लिहाज करना ही पड़ता है। एक तो दुर्भाग्य से हम दोनों औरत जात हैं। न जाने क्यों लोगों ने मुझे नारी जाति की समर्थक और सहायक समझ लिया है। शायद इसलिए कि मैं अपने भतीजों को भतीजियों से ज्यादा ठोका करती हूँ।
खुदा कसम, मैं किसी विशेष जाति की तरफदार नहीं। मेरी भतीजियाँ अपेक्षाकृत सीधी और भतीजे बड़े ही बदमाश हैं। ऐसी हालत में हर समझदार उन्हें सुधारने के लिए डाँटते-फटकारते रहना इन्सानी फर्ज समझता है।
पर उन्हें यह कैसे समझाऊँ। वे मुझे अपनी शुभचिन्तक मान चुकी हैं। और वह लड़की, जो किसी के बिना जिन्दा न रह सकने की स्थिति को पहुँच चुकी हो, कुछ हठीली होती है, इसलिए मैं कुछ भी करूँ, उसके प्रति अपनी सहानुभूति से इनकार नहीं कर सकती। अनचाहे या अनमने रूप से सही, मुझे उनके हितैषियों और शुभचिन्तकों की पंक्ति में खड़ा होना पड़ता है।
दुर्भाग्य से मेरा स्वास्थ्य हमेशा ही अच्छा रहा और बीमार होकर मुर्गी के शोरबे और अंगूर खाने के मौके बहुत ही कम मिल पाये। यही कारण था कि शायद कभी प्राण-घातक किस्म का इश्क न हो सका। हमारे अब्बा जरूरत से ज्यादा सावधानी बरतने वालों में से थे। हर बीमारी की समय से पहले ही रोक-थाम कर दिया करते थे। बरसात आयी और पानी उबाल कर मिलने लगा। आस-पास के सारे कुँओं में दवाइयाँ पड़ गयीं। खोंचे वालों के चालान करवाने शुरू कर दिये। हर चीज ढँकी रहे। बेचारी मक्खियाँ गुस्से से भनभनाया करतीं, क्या मजाल जो एक जर्रा मिल जाये। मलेरिया फैलने से पहले कुनेन हलक से उतार दी जाती और फोड़े-फुंसियों से बचने के लिए चिरायता पिलाया जाता।
बहुत दिनों के बाद बाज़ारों में तुर्रेदार पगड़ियाँ और लाल तुर्की टोपियाँ दिखाई दे रही थीं। लाहौर से आए हुए मुसलमानों में काफ़ी संख्या ऐसे लोगों की थी, जिन्हें विभाजन के समय मजबूर होकर अमृतसर छोड़कर जाना पड़ा था। साढ़े सात साल में आए अनिवार्य परिवर्तनों को देखकर कहीं उनकी आँखों में हैरानी भर जाती और कहीं अफ़सोस घिर आता-- वल्लाह, कटड़ा जयमलसिंह इतना चौड़ा कैसे हो गया? क्या इस तरफ़ के सबके सब मकान जल गए? यहाँ हकीम आसिफ़ अली की दुकान थी न ? अब यहाँ एक मोची ने कब्जा कर रखा है।
और कहीं-कहीं ऐसे भी वाक्य सुनाई दे जाते -- वली, यह मस्जिद ज्यों की त्यों खड़ी है ? इन लोगों ने इसका गुरूद्वारा नहीं बना दिया ?
जिस रास्ते से भी पाकिस्तानियों की टोली गुजरती, शहर के लोग उत्सुकतापूर्वक उसकी ओर देखते रहते। कुछ लोग अब भी मुसलमानों को आते देखकर शंकित-से रास्ते हट जाते थे, जबकि दूसरे आगे बढ़कर उनसे बगलगीर होने लगते थे। ज्यादातर वे आगन्तुकों से ऐसे-ऐसे सवाल पूछते थे कि आजकल लाहौर का क्या हाल है? अनारकली में अब पहले जितनी रौनक होती है या नहीं? सुना है, शाहालमी गेट का बाज़ार पूरा नया बना है? कृष्ण नगर में तो कोई खास तब्दीली नहीं आई? वहाँ का रिश्वतपुरा क्या वाकई रिश्वत के पैसे से बना है? कहते हैं पाकिस्तान में अब बुर्का बिल्कुल उड़ गया है, यह ठीक है? इन सवालों में इतनी आत्मीयता झलकती थी कि लगता था कि लाहौर एक शहर नहीं, हज़ारों लोगों का सगा-सम्बन्धी है, जिसके हालात जानने के लिए वे उत्सुक हैं। लाहौर से आए हुए लोग उस दिन शहर-भर के मेहमान थे, जिनसे मिलकर और बातें करके लोगों को खामखाह ख़ुशी का अनुभव होता था।
बड़ा बाग़
भारत में राजस्थान राज्य में रामगढ़ के रास्ते पर जैसलमेर से लगभग ६ किलोमीटर उत्तर में एक उद्यान परिसर है। यह जैसलमेर के महाराजाओं के शाही समाधि स्थल या छत्रियों का एक सेट जैसा है, जिसकी शुरुआत जय सिंह द्वितीय के साथ १७४३ ईस्वी में की थी।
इतिहास
राज्य के संस्थापक और जैसलमेर राज्य के महाराजा, जैत सिंह द्वितीय (१४९७-१५३०), महारावल जैसल सिंह के वंशज, १६वीं शताब्दी में उनके शासनकाल के दौरान एक पानी की टंकी बनाने के लिए एक बांध बनाया था। इससे इस क्षेत्र में रेगिस्तान हरा हो गया।
उनकी मृत्यु के बाद, उनके बेटे लूणकरण ने झील के बगल में एक सुंदर बगीचा और झील के बगल में एक पहाड़ी पर अपने पिता के लिए छतरी का निर्माण करवाया। बाद में, लूणकरण और अन्य भाटियों के लिए यहां कई और स्मारकों का निर्माण किया गया। अंतिम छतरी, महाराजा जवाहर सिंह'महाराज रघुनाथ सिंह और पृथ्वीराज सिंह की है, जो २०वीं सदी की तारीखों और भारतीय स्वतंत्रता के बाद पूरी नहीं हो पायी।

बड़ा बाग़ एक छोटी पहाड़ी पर स्थित है। बड़ा बाग में प्रवेश पहाड़ी के नीचे से होता है। पहली पंक्ति में कुछ स्मारक हैं और भी कई स्मारक हैं, जो पहाड़ियों पर चढ़ने में सुलभ हैं। स्मारक विभिन्न आकारों के हैं और बलुआ पत्थर के नक्काशीदार हैं। शासकों, रानियों, राजकुमारों और अन्य शाही परिवार के सदस्यों के स्मारक बनाये गए हैं।ये छतरी बनाने का अधिकार शाही परिवार के देहवासी राजा के पोते का होता है।।जवाहर सिंह और गिरधर सिंह महाराज की छतरियां अभी पूर्ण नही हो पाई।। प्रत्येक शासक के स्मारक में एक संगमरमर का स्लैब है, जिसमें शासक के बारे में शिलालेख और घोड़े पर एक व्यक्ति की छवि है।स्थानीय भाषा मे इस घुड़सवार शिलालेख को जुंझार बोलते है जो देवतुल्य होता है।।
