The Invincible Masked Rider (L'invincibile cavaliere mascherato, Umberto Lenzi, 1963)
Who is that mysterious masked hero? Sarge? No. Rosemary, the telephone operator? No. Penry, the mild-mannered janitor? Could be! Then again, it could also be Robin Hood, so don't be too sure. Join us once again as we huddle together inside the nearest large castle for protection against the plague whilst doing our best to unmask the eponymous hero. We also discuss Weird Worcester, the UK's newest and best Italian-themed festival where Adrian had the time of his life as a disappointing Italian translator. The Women of Devil's Island (Le prigioniere dell'isola del diavolo, Domenico Paolella, 1962)
It's adventure on land and on sea as we chart a course to Devil's Island! It's the time of the French Revolution and tempers are running high, quite literally, as we visit those poor female prisoners of Devil's Island, who are forced to pan for gold by day in the hot South American sun, and then entertain the prison guards in improvised brothels by night. If only there was a dashing young captain who could come and save them? And perhaps punch a crocodile whilst he's at it? We are now halfway through our Rapiers & Ruffles season now, so hitch up your skirts and wade into the croc-infested waters in search of cinematic gold with us, your piratical hosts Rod Barnett and Adrian Smith. If you want to watch the film (and you should) you can find it on YouTube. The Executioner of Venice ( Il boia di Venezia, Luigi Capuano, 1963)
Grab your carnival mask, strap on your rapier and jump into a passing gondola, so that you can travel with us through 17th century Venezia, where evil schemes are afoot, pious nuns need rescuing from wicked pirates, and strong men swing big choppers with abandon. The Executioner of Venice is another fine example of the Rapiers & Ruffles sub-genre of Italian costume adventure films, and a great-quality copy can be found in English on YouTube. Wild, Wild Podcast is back from the commentary track-induced wilderness to talk about another fine film in our Rapiers and Ruffles season. This time we're in France as we go on a non-canonical adventure with D'Artagnan and Porthos, two of the legendary Musketeers. No one knows where the other two are. Tiger of the Seven Seas (La tigre dei sette mari, Luigi Capuano, 1962)
Has the man you love ever killed your father and stolen your pirate ship? Have you ever seduced a Spanish governor to gain access to his private dungeons? Have you ever dug for buried treasure whilst under attack from your enemies? If so, you might not want to listen to this week's episode. But if all that sounds kind of fun, then join Adrian and Rod for the latest episodes in our new season Rapiers and Ruffles, as we set off across the Seven Seas with Tiger and his red-headed daughter Consuela looking for adventure. If you want to play along at home you can find a version of Tiger of the Seven Seas on YouTube but be warned, it's badly cropped. The Black Duke (Pino Mercanti, 1963)
Who is the Black Duke? Who is the Red Carnation? Who is actually the hero of this film? These are just some of the questions that may or may not get answered in this new episode, where your two intrepid podcasting musketeers delve ever further into the forgotten realms of cult Italian cinema. After a winter spent besieging castles and fighting their enemies, Rod and Adrian are back to present a new season of forgotten Italian films. Dubbed "Rapiers and Ruffles" by Rod, these are medieval adventure films which had a surge of popularity off the back of the success of the "Sword and Sandal" films of the early sixties. So stick your jerkin on, grab your sword and jump onto the nearest available horse; this is going to be a long campaign. LSD - Flesh of the Devil (LSD - Inferno per pochi dollari, Massimo Mida, 1967)
Turn on, tune in and drop out with Rod and Adrian as they enter the wild wild world of 1960s psychedelics. In this episode they take a trip with secret super-agent Rex Miller as he infiltrates the evil international crime organisation E.C.H.O. (just don't try and ask anyone what it stands for) and foils their plans to drug the world with LSD. At least, that's what might be going on. It's honestly hard to tell. Isabella, Duchess of the Devils (Bruno Corbucci, 1969)
"En garde!" In this episode we jump back in time to seventeenth century France, where dastardly deeds are afoot and the Duchess Isabella is forced to take revenge against the evil Baron Von Nutter for the murder of her entire family and the theft of her family state. And in this film, revenge is a dish best served sexy. We are now coming towards the end of our fumetti season. If you want to do some background reading on the most popular Italian comics of the sixties, there's a great resource here on Comic Vine. Satanik (Piero Vivarelli, 1968)
Skin trouble? Grey hair getting you down? Walking with a stoop? Why not take a drug that has not safely been tested on people yet, will probably make you violent, but will definitely make you young and hot? If that sounds good, you too could become Satanik, the anti-hero of our latest episode. This is one of the few films from this season to have actually been restored, and is currently available on blu ray from Terror Vision and is highly recommended. We are now coming towards the end of our fumetti season. If you want to do some background reading on the most popular Italian comics of the sixties, there's a great resource here on Comic Vine. Mister X (Avenger X, Piero Vivarelli, 1967)
Bored of winning the golf championships all the time? Is life with your beautiful fiancé just not quite giving you the thrills you need? In that case, why not put on a black mask, stick a big X on your belt and then head out to fight international criminals? That's just what Mister X did, and he's never been happier, whether he's chucking henchmen out of windows or blowing up phone boxes. Yes, we're back with another episode in our Fumetti season, and this is one of the lesser-known films based on a relatively unsuccessful comic. As usual with this season, there's no decent home video release to speak of, but you can find a poor quality copy on YouTube. It's good fun though, and gives Rod and Adrian plenty to discuss. We are now coming towards the end of our fumetti season. If you want to do some background reading on the most popular Italian comics of the sixties, there's a great resource here on Comic Vine. Danger: Diabolik (Mario Bava, 1968)
Dashing home after having stolen a country's entire gold reserve and blown up its tax offices, Rod and Adrian grab their microphones to talk about one of the greatest films to be covered on Wild, Wild Podcast - Danger: Diabolik. In this episode the latest Severin Films announcements are discussed, and Adrian potentially alienates everyone by saying something blasphemous about Morricone's score. Fenomenal and the Treasure of Tutankamen (Ruggero Deodato, 1968)
In this phenomenally good episode, Rod and Adrian get to grips with a film that makes very little sense whichever language you watch it in. Yes, it's that dastardly master of crime/ vigilante hero (delete as appropriate, we couldn't work it out) Fenomenal: Thrill as he kicks drug dealers into the sea! Gasp as he climbs walls very carefully! Worry in case he bumps into the furniture with that mask on! You can see the whole film for yourself on YouTube. We are now halfway through our fumetti season. Arrriva Dorellik (Steno, 1967)
Take one of Italy's most popular entertainers, stick him in a moth-eaten supervillain costume, then have him come face to face with a buffonish Terry-Thomas and you have Arrriva Dorellik, a star vehicle for singer, actor and all-round charisma machine Johnny Dorelli. But given this is an Italian comedy, will Rod and Adrian be able to agree on whether this is one to enjoy or avoid like the plague? Tune in to find out. In this episode Adrian also gets very easily distracted by Dorelli's Sanremo win of 1959 which leads to him going on about the Eurovision Song Contest at length. Johnny Dorelli was still singing this film's theme Arriva la bomba well into the 1970s, and can be seen making an appearance on Italian television here. The fumetti season is well underway! If you want to do some background reading on the most popular Italian comics of the sixties, there's a great resource here on Comic Vine.
