The Glory Days of Doo Wop: The Music That Changed the World (Day 2)
The Glory Days of Doo Wop: The Real-Life History of the Music That Changed the World Doo-wop—an unmistakable blend of rhythm and blues, soul, and gospel—emerged in the late 1940s and early 1950s as a defining sound of urban America. The genre was forged from the raw energies of street corner harmonies, the influence of gospel choirs, and the burgeoning desire of young, African American artists to create something uniquely their own. In this essay, we’ll explore the real-life history behind the doo-wop sound, its cultural impact, and how it played a pivotal role in changing not just the face of American music, but also the social fabric of the country. The Birth of Doo-Wop: A Sound from the Streets Doo-wop’s roots lie in the streets and alleys of post-World War II American cities, particularly in neighborhoods with significant African American populations. During this time, the African American community was still reeling from the aftermath of the war but was also on the cusp of entering a period of new cultural and social movements. For many African American youth, music was a means of self-expression and a way to foster a sense of community. In cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, groups of young men would gather on street corners, often with no instruments other than their voices, to form vocal harmony groups. They would sing in tight, intricate harmonies, often improvising melodies and layering “nonsense syllables” like “doo-wop,” “sh-boom,” or “bop” into their performances. The term “doo-wop” itself didn’t initially refer to a genre; it was simply the vocalized sounds that formed the rhythmic backdrop to the melodies. These harmonies, however, were a product of African American gospel traditions, and they would soon evolve into one of the most influential sounds in American music. Many of the early doo-wop groups were composed of teenagers who had no formal musical training. They simply loved to sing. The genre became a kind of grassroots movement, where aspiring artists—many of them from poor, working-class families—could make their voices heard. As the 1950s unfolded, the doo-wop sound began to gain traction, first in local neighborhoods and later, through radio stations and record labels, in mainstream America. The Rise of Doo-Wop in Popular Music The commercial rise of doo-wop began in the early 1950s with the release of several groundbreaking records. One of the earliest and most influential examples was “In The Still of the Nite” by The Five Satins, released in 1956. This song, with its smooth harmonies and yearning lyrics, became an anthem for the genre, showcasing the raw, emotional power of doo-wop. It wasn’t just the harmony that made it special; it was the way the voices seemed to speak directly to the listener, tapping into the universal experience of young love. The success of The Five Satins was followed by a wave of other groups—each bringing their own unique flavor to the doo-wop sound. The Platters, with their sophisticated vocal arrangements and crossover appeal, became one of the first doo-wop groups to achieve mainstream success. Their hit songs like “Only You” (1955) and “The Great Pretender” helped to popularize the genre and broaden its appeal beyond African American audiences. As doo-wop gained popularity, record labels began to sign more groups, fueling the growth of the genre. One of the most notable labels during this time was Atlantic Records, home to some of the most important doo-wop artists. The Drifters, whose hits like “Under the Boardwalk” and “Save the Last Dance for Me” became iconic, helped to blend doo-wop with other styles like soul and R&B, expanding the genre’s reach even further. Doo-wop’s appeal wasn’t just about the music—it was also about the image. The artists were often young, sharp-dressed, and effortlessly cool, tapping into the growing youth culture of the 1950s. The doo-wop groups, often composed of African American men, provided a

Malt Shoppe Memories: The Very Best Days of Doo Wop (Day One)
The Glory Days of Doo Wop: A Nostalgic Journey through a Pivotal Musical Era   Doo-wop, the genre that thrived in the 1950s and early 1960s, is an integral part of the American musical landscape. It emerged as a unique form of rhythm and blues, blending tight harmonies, catchy melodies, and soulful vocals, often performed with little more than the voices of the singers themselves. The genre has a timeless appeal, capturing the essence of an era when music was not only a form of entertainment but a social and cultural force. Doo-wop was more than just a sound; it was a movement that helped define youth culture, racial integration, and the rise of the modern music industry. Origins and Evolution Doo-wop's roots can be traced to African American gospel, rhythm and blues (R&B), and vocal jazz traditions. Early forms of vocal harmony groups, such as the Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots, laid the groundwork for the doo-wop sound. However, it was in the post-World War II era, particularly during the late 1940s and early 1950s, that doo-wop began to take shape. It was a response to the societal changes of the time—racial integration, economic prosperity, and a growing youth culture—that gave the genre its distinct flavor. The genre’s hallmark was its emphasis on vocal harmony. Doo-wop groups, often composed of male vocalists, would layer their voices in intricate patterns, creating smooth, rich textures that were both catchy and emotionally compelling. The use of nonsense syllables like "doo-wop," "sh-bop," and "ba-da-bop" became a signature feature, with the background singers creating rhythmic and melodic hooks that were instantly recognizable. This vocalization style was often paired with simple but effective instrumental arrangements, which made the music accessible and radio-friendly. The Sound and Structure of Doo Wop The doo-wop sound was built around a few key elements: tight harmonies, smooth melodies, and a rhythm section that kept things steady and simple. The lead singer typically carried the melody, while the backing vocals added texture and depth. The chords often followed a basic progression—usually 1-6-4-5—which allowed for easy sing-along potential and gave the music a sense of familiarity. One of the defining characteristics of doo-wop was its focus on young love and the romantic idealism of the time. Many doo-wop songs were about love, heartbreak, and longing, themes that resonated deeply with the youth of the era. The genre was also notable for its celebration of the vocal ensemble, with groups often performing a cappella or with minimal instrumental accompaniment. This emphasis on vocal technique made doo-wop a uniquely inclusive genre, as groups could form in neighborhoods, schools, or even on street corners, where young men would gather and sing for the sheer joy of making music together. Icons of the Era During the 1950s and early 1960s, numerous doo-wop groups rose to prominence, creating an enduring legacy that would continue to influence popular music for decades. Some of the most iconic groups of the genre include: The Platters: Known for their smooth harmonies and hits like "Only You" and "The Great Pretender," The Platters were one of the first doo-wop groups to achieve mainstream success, crossing over into pop and becoming international stars. The Drifters: Though their lineup changed frequently, The Drifters became synonymous with the doo-wop sound through hits like "Under the Boardwalk" and "Save the Last Dance for Me." They helped to bridge the gap between doo-wop and soul music, expanding the genre's influence. The Belmonts: Best known for their work with Dion, The Belmonts created some of the most enduring tracks of the doo-wop era, including "A Teenager in Love." The Five Satins: Known for the classic "In The Still of The Nite," The Five Satins captured the essence of the genre with their heartfelt performances and smooth vocal harmonies. The Moonglows:

M.P.H.: She earned a Master's of Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Residency: Lieberman was Chief Resident in Psychiatry at NYU-Bellevue. Clinical Faculty: She has been a member of the clinical faculty in UCLA's Department of Psychiatry for many years. Other Training: She studied at the Anna Freud Hampstead Clinic and the Institute of Psychiatry/Maudsley Hospital in London.    Career and notable work Forensic Psychiatrist: With over 20 years of experience, she works as a forensic psychiatrist and expert witness on hundreds of civil and criminal cases nationwide, including high-profile cases like the Jenny Jones Talk Show murder trial and celebrity divorces. Media Personality: An Emmy-honored media personality, Lieberman frequently provides psychiatric expertise on news and talk shows such as Oprah and the Today Show, and hosts a radio show and podcast. Author: She is an award-winning author of several books, including Bad Boys, Bad Girls, and Lions and Tigers and Terrorists, Oh My!. Activism: She has testified before Congress multiple times to advocate for mental health awareness in the media. Hollywood Consultant: She has worked as a psychiatric script consultant for soap operas like The Young and the Restless.    Controversies Analyzing Public Figures: Dr. Lieberman has faced criticism for providing analyses of public figures she has not personally met, which goes against the American Psychiatric Association's "Goldwater Rule". Criticism from UCLA: An article in Shockya raised questions about the use of psychiatric evaluations by UCLA-trained psychiatrists, including Lieberman, to potentially discredit individuals who challenge established interests. Video Game Controversy: In 2011, she suggested that video games contribute to aggression and sexual assault.      SOCIAL MEDIA EXPLOITATION – HOW IT WORKS Social media platforms exploit and manipulate psychological mechanisms to drive excessive engagement, often at the expense of users' mental well-being. While Dr. Carole Lieberman has not specified a distinct list of mechanisms, her public stance as a "Media Psychiatrist" aligns with a recognized set of issues identified by mental health professionals, researchers, and tech critics.  Key psychological mechanisms that make social media platforms harmful include: The variable reward system Social media platforms use an intermittent, variable reward schedule similar to that of a slot machine.  The dopamine hit: Each notification, "like," or share is a potential reward that triggers a release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain's reward pathway. The unpredictability factor: Since users don't know when they will receive a reward, they are incentivized to keep scrolling and checking for updates. The unpredictability of the reward makes the platforms highly addictive.  Social comparison and curated reality Social media platforms present a distorted view of others' lives, leading to a constant and often unhealthy process of comparison.  The "highlight reel": Users primarily post curated, idealized versions of their lives, showcasing achievements, vacations, and happy moments. Feelings of inadequacy: When a user's unfiltered reality is constantly compared to the polished "highlight reel" of others, it can create feelings of low self-esteem, envy, and inadequacy. Filters and altered self-perception: The pervasive use of filters on images and videos further promotes unrealistic beauty standards, which can lead to body dissatisfaction and a disconnect from one's authentic self.  Fear of missing out (FOMO) Platforms capitalize on the fundamental human need for connection by creating a fear of e

THE MANY FACES OF GREIF
GREIFIT'S NOT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE The Many Faces of Grief: Various Ways People Handle Grief 1. Understanding Grief Grief is a natural response to loss—whether it’s the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a major life change, or even the loss of identity or health. While it’s universal, the way each person grieves is deeply personal and influenced by culture, beliefs, personality, and life experiences. 2. The Classic Model: The Five Stages of Grief Psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross outlined five common stages: Denial – Refusing to accept the reality of the loss. Anger – Feeling frustration or resentment about what happened. Bargaining – Wishing or imagining ways the loss could be undone. Depression – Deep sadness, withdrawal, or hopelessness. Acceptance – Coming to terms with the reality of loss. These stages aren’t linear; people move back and forth between them, or skip some entirely. 3. Cultural Expressions of Grief Different cultures have distinct mourning rituals: Western traditions often emphasize funerals and memorials focused on remembrance. Eastern traditions may focus on honoring ancestors and maintaining spiritual connections. Collectivist cultures tend to grieve communally, while individualist cultures may encourage private processing. 4. Emotional and Behavioral Differences People express grief in diverse ways: Emotional expressers cry, talk openly, and seek support. Instrumental grievers cope by staying busy or focusing on tasks. Avoidant grievers suppress emotions, sometimes appearing “strong” or “unmoved.” Chronic grievers experience long-term sadness and difficulty moving on. 5. Coping Mechanisms Healthy coping can take many forms: Talking it out with friends, family, or therapists. Creative outlets like writing, art, or music. Spiritual or religious practices such as prayer, meditation, or rituals. Physical activity as a way to release emotional energy. Some may also resort to unhealthy coping, like substance use or emotional withdrawal, highlighting the need for support and compassion. 6. The Growth That Can Follow Grief While grief is painful, many people experience post-traumatic growth—a newfound appreciation for life, deeper relationships, or renewed purpose. 7. A Universal Yet Unique Experience No two people grieve the same way. Understanding that can help us be more compassionate—toward others and ourselves.

In June 1979, Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with Crazy Blue Eyes, which she wrote with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, and which raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts.  Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist of the Year.   Lacy’s success was powered not just by the artist’s recordings, but by a stage show that truly electrified audiences. She quickly became one of the few women who could successfully open a show for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Willie Nelson, Merl
