Authorities estimate that 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard has been missing from Vandenberg Village, California, since October 7, 2025. She was last seen with her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, when she was driving a rented white Chevy Malibu, license plate number 9MNG101, from California to Nebraska between October 7th, 2025, and October 14th, 2025. She is no longer in possession of that vehicle, but investigators have asked the public to report any information they may have about Ashlee, Melodee, or the vehicle between those dates to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office at 805-681-4150. And what happens when a story is rewritten for the screen, replacing a family's painful, decades-long mystery with a neat, tidy, and conclusive fictional story? The new season of Netflix's Monster is a global phenomenon. But in its telling of the Ed Gein story, it presents a young woman named Evelyn Hartley as one of his confirmed victims. It's a gripping narrative.  There's just one problem. According to the official investigation, it's not true.    My mission in this episode is to tell the true, unresolved story of Evelyn Hartley's disappearance, to reclaim the facts from the fiction, and to remember the girl who vanished long before she was ever a character on a screen. 14-year-old Evelyn Grace Hartley was last seen on October 24, 1953, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She has brown hair and blue eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she was 5’6” and weighed approximately 126lbs. She was last seen wearing red jeans, a white blouse, and white bobby socks. In Austin, Texas, in 1991, the city was on the verge of becoming the place we know today, a tech hub, a cultural destination. But back then, it was still a big town that felt small, a place that believed itself safe from the kind of darkness that haunted bigger cities. At the Hillside strip mall on West Anderson Lane, there was a little shop called "I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!" It was a symbol of that every day American life… a place for after-school treats, first dates, and a first job. A place of simple, ordinary innocence. Buton the cold night of December 6, 1991, this symbol of innocence became the scene of an unspeakable crime. An act of such brutal violence that it would steal four young lives and leave a wound on the soul of the city that would fester for nearly 34 years. On September 14, 2001, 20-year-old Amber Shawnell Hoopes vanished from her grandparents' Idaho Falls home. Amber was last seen reading a magazine and watching TV around 10:35 p.m., but by 1:00 a.m., she was gone. Her family quickly suspected foul play. Suspicion immediately focused on Keith "Mark" Hescock, a disgruntled former employee of Amber's grandfather.   Amber is white, about 5’5”, with brown hair and brown eyes, and weighed approximately 140 pounds when she disappeared. She also has vitiligo with some white colored spots on her upper left arm and left leg. She was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, gray boxer shorts, and her knee-length terry cloth robe.  Amber’s case is still open and active. In November 1987, Keith Dardeen grew uneasy after a string of 15 homicides near his home in Ina, Illinois, and began planning to move his family to safety. 17-year-old Blake Chappell went missing in October 2011 after attending his homecoming dance. His body was found in a nearby creek two months later. The autopsy confirmed Blake died from a gunshot wound to the head and his death was ruled a homicide. Officials believe he was only in the water for about a week, leaving his whereabouts unknown for weeks. On September 12, 2025, Scotty Elliot Smith was arrested for Blake's murder. In the early morning hours of May 20th, 1990, 29-year-old mother of two, Susan Poupart, went to a party, was seen getting into a car with some men in Lac du Flambeau, and was never seen alive again. This case has defied resolution for 35 years. It has also cast a profound, enduring shadow over a family and entire community in Northern Wisconsin. In July of 2015, two-year-old DeOrr Kunz Jr. vanished without a trace during a family camping trip in Idaho. For years, this case has been shrouded in mystery, swirling with unanswered questions, shifting theories, and heartbreaking dead ends, but now, over a decade later, new information has come to light. DeOrr Kunz Jr. was last seen on July 10th, 2015, near Leadore, Idaho, in Lemhi County. He has hazel eyes and, at that time, blonde hair. He was approximately 3 feet tall and weighed about 30lbs. In 1996, 13-year-old Rachel Marie Mellon-Skemp stayed home sick from school. By the end of the day, she, along with a blanket and two pillows from her bed, had vanished into the freezing Illinois winter. There were no witnesses and no trail leading to where Rachel may have gone, and the only story we have comes from the last person to see her alive. Rachel Marie Mellon-Skemp was last seen on January 31st, 1996, in Bolingbrook, Illinois. She is Asian and White with black hair and hazel eyes. At the time of her disappearance, her hair was shoulder length, she was about 5 feet tall, and weighed approximately 80lbs. On Saturday, May 13, 2000, in Adelaide, South Australia, a mother and her teenage daughter were last seen leaving their home at 2:30 a.m. We don’t know why or what happened to them after that. What we do know is that one of them was murdered, and the other remains missing to this day. But thanks to a recent discovery just a few weeks before recording this episode, rewards totaling over a million dollars and new technology, investigators are more hopeful than ever that this case can and will be solved. On a cold morning in 2011, Julia Biryukova pulled her car to the side of the road, claiming it ran out of gas. She says she left her 2-year-old son, Sky, asleep in the vehicle while she took her 4-year-old daughter to get help. When she returned, Sky was gone. What followed was a case that has continued to stun the local community and, really, the nation for nearly 15 years. 2-year-old Sky Metalwala was reported missing from Bellevue, Washington, on November 6, 2011. At that time, he was 2’10” tall and weighed approximately 30lbs. He is biracial with black hair and brown eyes.
