Street Focus 102: Streets of the World - Detroit with Andrew Shields

This week on this episode of Street Focus, we are going to Detroit, Michigan and Andrew Shields is your local guide for this new adventure!

Who is Andrew Shields?

A Metro Detroiter since I could crawl, I've always had an interest in the city. Trips to Tiger Stadium with my parents as a child, then live music with my now wife in the city's small venues as a teen; Detroit remains a destination. Photography classes in my youth taught me the fundamentals and darkroom processing. As film transitioned to digital I took a break from shooting but when I learned that mirrorless systems allowed for adapting classic manual lenses to modern bodies my passion for photography was reignited. Today I shoot as often as possible, preferring candid street scenes with considered compositions over other photographic disciplines. When I'm not shooting you can find me hunting down the vintage lenses that I find at local thrift stores and estate sales which I use for all of my street photography.

Street Focus 101: Through Our Eyes Project with Jason Williamson

Street Focus 101: Through Our Eyes Project with Jason Williamson

About the Project: The Through Our Eyes Project hands out cameras to people who are living on the street, in a local shelter or are otherwise affected by homelessness. Unlike any project before, the homeless in communities will have an integral hand in helping expose the issue of homelessness rather than merely being the problem that others are trying to solve. Through Our Eyes Project is bigger than a social experiment. It's greater than an art piece. It's more important than an outreach. This project is a lifeline. The photographers will be equipped with a tool to tell their story. They will be encouraged through a word of hope. The community will be engaged to support those who work with the homeless and proceeds will help fund homeless ministries. The cameras are disposable, but the people behind them are not.

About Jason: Jason Williamson is a pastor in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After studying photography at Winthrop University, Jason worked in digital advertising sales for 10 years prior to transitioning to a career in ministry. Going on an international mission trip to a megacity in Asia changed his perspective on how he should be living his life as a Christian. Photography has been one of his passions for nearly 18 years and has become a critical tool for his ministry work as it tells stories, captures events and rethinks the role of the arts in missions and ministry.
Jason travels around the world as part of his ministry and enjoys street photography, abstracts and making ugly or disinteresting things look beautiful for people to see in a new way. He loves his wife and two children, listening to music, watching documentaries, and enabling others to use their gifts and talents to do great things.

In this Street of the World segment, we are going to Austin, Texas and your guide for this adventure is local photographer Dickie Bennett.

Who is Dickie Bennett?

I was born in Austin TX. In 1957 and lived there until 2001 when I moved to the suburbs just outside of Austin. I have been a professional hairstylist for the past 40 years and into photography since I was about 16 years old. I love all kinds of photography but my main focus is on Street and Landscape. My Street photography is about life. It always features the human condition naturally within a public place as it was at that moment in time.

Contact info:
Webpage: http://www.dickiebennett.com
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/dickie.bennett.3

Airport: Austin–Bergstrom International Airport. East of downtown Austin about 10 miles and about 20 minutes without traffic.

Austin is a exciting place to do street photography. It’s very unique. Lots of diverse and expressive people you could say. Austin is  said to be the live music capital of the world. The SXSW festival is in March. People from all over the world come for Music, tech, film, and even comedy festivals. City Motto: “Keep Austin weird”.

Where to stay? Sheraton Austin at IH35 & 11th st. La Quinta Inn Austin at 11th & Trinity St. Omni Austin Hotel Downtown at 8th & Brazos. The Driskill at 6th & Brazos. The Radisson and the Four Seasons at Congress & E. Cesar Chavez St. are right on the Colorado river.

UT area: Guadalupe & 26th. Parking lot at  25th & Guadalupe. Walk to MLK. 5 block walk and then walk back up the other side. Neat walls with graphics. 24th & Guadalupe is a good place to stand with lots of action. Artists market area on weekends sometimes is at 2300 Guadalupe by the Co-Op wall graphic (center of UT area). Lots of students walking and bicycling during school as well as business people walking around and many other unique individuals. Best time is during school August – May. But there is  always something interesting there to photograph.

Congress Area: I like to park at 11th st. & Congress. In front of the Capitol. Walk down Congress to the S.congress bridge. Abiout a 11 block walk. And then back. When we have a photo walk we usually meet at Fado’s Irish pub and restaurant at 4th & Lavaca and it’s just 1 ½ blocks from Congress. Park at Guadalupe & 4th which is just 1 block west of Fado’s.

Congress Avenue Bridge Bats: If you are lucky to be here April – October when our bats migrate back to Austin, the original population is something like  750,000 bats. They are all pregnant females, making this a maternity colony. During their stay under the South Congress Bridge, they each give birth to one pup. With that, the population doubles to 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats. Every summer night, hundreds of people gather to see the world's largest urban bat colony emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in downtown Austin. It’s almost like a party and there are tons of great photos to be had there.

6th Street: Not much you won’t see on 6th street.

This week on Street Focus my guests and I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of being a street photographer in a small town. Ken Lyons from Kapunda, Southern Australia and Monty Montgomery from Oshkosh, Wisconsin share their stories.

Monty Montgomery - Website

Photography has been a part off my life since I can remember. When in the 5th grade my parents gave me a Polaroid Swinger, a black and white instant camera. After high school and my first SLR, things really took off. Some black and white, a little dark room work, but mostly slide film. I welcomed digital photography with open arms, computers and photography a perfect match! As my photography evolved, I found myself on the streets of Oshkosh photographing and interacting with people I may never see again! Today I’m happy to call myself a street photographer.

Ken Lyons - Website

Ken is a photographer living in rural South Australia. He's also a qualified tour guide. Although he has been photographing his entire life, Ken has only taken up full time photography in recent years. He loves to teach and has a relaxed approach. An experienced traveller, Ken loves making images that tell a location's story - the place, the people and the culture. He believes interesting images can be made anywhere from your own back yard to exotic overseas locations. Teaching people to actually "see" what they're looking at is something he loves to do. Photography is not just about pressing a button. It's also about vision. Learning to look, see and capture, no matter what camera you're using.

Street Focus 89: Q&A and Street Challenge

This week on Street Focus, my guest co-host is Susan Rosenberg Jones. Together we answer questions about promoting your street photography, how to put together a portfolio and more. Special thanks to Rob Wareham, Yuri Rasin, Bud James and Michael Schmitt for submitting your questions.

About my guest co-host, Susan Rosenberg Jones:
Susan Rosenberg Jones was born and raised in Boston, and moved to New York City in 1976. She holds a BS in Education from Lesley College.  As a post grad, she enrolled in SVA as an undergrad (at the time, they did not offer an MFA program) and studied photography for two years.
In 1978, Susan began working at a lab in Manhattan as a custom black and white printer. She loved that job but quit when she became pregnant for fear of the chemicals. A few years later, she started working as a photo researcher for a stock photo agency, and began a long career in stock photography, licensing images to various publishing and advertising clients.
During her daughter’s growing up years, Susan photographed regularly, shooting chromes in those days because it was most convenient.
In 2008, Susan’s husband passed away after a long illness. She felt the need to photograph seriously again and purchased her first digital camera. Feeling rusty, she took a course at ICP just to re-connect with the camera controls and practice with editing software. Other Continuing Ed classes followed.
She worked on various portrait projects: women of a certain age, couples who’d been together for many years, and in 2011 began work on Building 1, a series about her neighbors in the apartment complex in Tribeca where she’d lived since 1984.
In 2012 she married her second husband, Joel. As a tangent to her photographs of her neighbors, she began shooting in her own home, and Joel was a willing subject. He was a bit skittish at first but he became more comfortable as she kept photographing. From this practice, Susan’s body of work, titled Second Time Around emerged.
Susan explores her feelings about growing older, family and community connections, through photography
She was on the show 2 years ago for episode 10. See more of her work on her website.
