TSVP Radio Theater Podcast (Ep22) – TGC’s Our Stories – A Play for Beaver County Voices
The Genesis Collective's Community Theatre Project

<h1>Our Stories: A Play for Beaver County Voices</h1>

About this Play
The performance featured here is a special preview of Our Story's future stage presentation to be held August 20, 2022 at the Black Box Theater in the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center, Midland, Pennsylvania.

This is the inaugural production of The Genesis Collective's Community Theatre Project--an innovative initiative designed to support the dramatic arts in Beaver County by creatively revealing and showcasing the voices and stories of our time and in our communities.

Our Story: A Play for Beaver County Voices does just that.  The subjects, incidents, characters, and dialogue are all based on actual interviews and recorded conversations with Beaver Countians--our friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens.  We make no apologies for the sometimes uncomfortable truths borne out by these lived experiences. We stand by our sources and lift up their voices and stories from the marginalized shadows, where far too many of us would rather they stay "out of sight, out of mind," as our play's Maggie Kowalski says.  These stories are bad for business, bad for attracting new investment.  What town wants to damage their reputation by talking about . . . food insecurity, homelessness, human trafficking, or the psychological traumas brought on by the Pandemic?

These Beaver County stories make us wince, naturally.  But we can't ignore them.  Only then can we meaningfully address the issues facing us today and with hope and possibility transform our communities--our entire county--into a better place to be.

Ars vitam meliorem facit -- art makes life better.

<p>On episode 21 of the TSVP Radio Theater Podcast, we talk with Rodney Pell, producer and sound engineer for the Apples of Gold radio theater company in Huntington, West Virginia.</p>The show traces its origin to Rodney's uncle, Bill Webb, who started out broadcasting a weekly devotional AM radio program nearly 50 years ago in Charleston, West Virginia.  Bill teamed up with his brother Danny Webb and together they started performing live theater plays of Christmas-themed scripts, which were followed by a devotion. After Bill died in 2013,  Danny continued recording old-time style radio shows which he distributed to area nursing homes.  The plays involve friends, family, coworkers, physicians, or whomever Danny can wrangle to sit in and read. Currently Rodney is marking his third year producing and engineering Danny's shows, as well as performing a wide range of acting duties as necessary.  Apples of Gold productions can be heard on <a href="https://wchsnetwork.com/">WCHS</a> AM radio broadcasting from Charleston, West Virginia starting the first Friday after Thanksgiving (Black Friday).

TSVP Radio Theater Podcast
TSVP Radio Theater Podcast (Ep07) – In the House
In the House Where I Was Born

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

On episode 7 of the TSVP Radio Theater Podcast, we present a faithful reproduction of the original broadcast of In the House.  Through the impressionistic narration of an “unknown soldier”—a representational every man—this radio drama pays homage to the common soldier and all who have died in military service. The show has been described as “a montage of memories—childhood homes, friends, family, war, death—that link the present with the past, the living with the dead, and form the cultural ties that bind communities together.”  Others have said that the play “conquers time and space with an ease and flair.”

Written and directed by WWI veteran Wyllis Cooper for ABC Radio, the original 30-minute broadcast aired live on Memorial Day 1949.  Our current production is a sound-stage adaptation that closely follows the original story and sound design.  An added scene updates the story to include the Korean and Vietnam Wars, with special reference to Pittsburgh and actual lines from our oral history archive.

This episode was recorded April 7, 2015 in the Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Produced by Kevin Farkas, directed by Dennis Schebetta, musical Score adaptation by Pat Blackburn, script adaptation & audiography by Kevin Farkas.  Cast: Dylan Myers (Unknown Soldier), Nancy Bach (Mother), Elias Vila-Kubiak (Boy), Claire Sabatine (Bride), Ken Bolden (Brother/Father), Jay Londino (Announcer).  Special thanks to the University of Pittsburgh Theatre Arts Department.  Music available on Youtube and SoundCloud: Stephen Griffith (I Ride an Old Paint, Streets of Laredo), Meikel Krieger (Fender Strat with Suhr FL Pickups).  Recording and performance editing by The Social Voice Project.  ©TSVP Radio Theater Podcast/The Social Voice Project, Inc.  All rights reserved.
