Truth Still Matters is back with another episode focused on being opened to the Word of the Lord in the present moment! This show is taken from a talk I gave at Awaken Ministries where the mission is cultivating an experiential encounter with Jesus Christ. The night was filled praise and worship, which included singing and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. What a glorious evening!!!! It has been awhile but Truth Still Matters is back! I did not stop teaching, no way!!! Actually, I’ve been teaching at a few different places which has taken up a lot of time. In its two-thousand-year history, the Catholic Church remains an unchanging yet developing entity. Since the church’s infancy, Catholic theologians have referenced the “deposit of faith,” which in early years referred to the written or orally revealed doctrines that formed the backbone of church teaching. Through the centuries, the definition came to be understood as the word of God, delivered through Jesus Christ and passed on to his apostles. Still, the deposit included both oral and written traditions and provided moral direction. The Second Vatican Council brought about many changes in the church, and once again, bishops and theologians addressed the deposit of faith. This invaluable concept came to be seen, not as mere dogma, but the expression of faith embodied in the words and deeds of Christ. The deposit is relevant to all elements of Catholic life: prayer, sacraments, and moral living. While the deposit has always addressed divine revelation, the post-Vatican II definition directs the faithful to think holistically. Hubert M. Sanders Jr.’s Deposit of Faith is intricate Catholic theology for the lay reader. It encourages Catholics to reach beyond dogma and written instructions to embrace the fullness of the Christian experience in all aspects of life.

The world will never be happy until one thing is realized. We have an insatiable desire that we try to fill with relationships, resources, and power. All of these fall immeasurable short, yet we still try these things while ignoring the one reality that will satisfy. What do we need to realize? How do we stay up in a down world? Sacred Scripture is truly the soul of theology. The inspired word of God can be initially intimidating but do not be discouraged. The Bible is ultimately the Heavenly Father’s love letter written to us, His children. In order to truly experience this great gift, there are some principles that need to govern our approach to the Bible. The Sacred Scripture has a very unique place in the deposit of faith and to miss out on this great gift would be a great tragedy. Thinking for oneself is exalted in the 21st century as it should be. Humans are made in the image and likeness of God and therefore should be thinking individuals. Unfortunately, this freedom of thought is often separated from an objective standard of truth. Truth is not created in the human mind but received in the mind as a gift from Truth, which is actually a Divine Person! Many Christians think they can pick and choose what they will believe, and this is done in the name of independent thought. Can we think for ourselves and submit to everything that Jesus teaches? Are these two items mutually exclusive? Are you an un”faith”ful bride?

Authority is an unpopular word in today’s society. History has shown a great abuse of authority where poor innocent people suffer as a result. This has been tragic, but the abuse of authority must NEVER rule out the proper use of authority. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has literally changed my life. In this episode of Truth Still Matters, my special guest and I reflect on our experience of adoring Christ in the Eucharist. Spending time in an adoration chapel is the remedy for living a life of haste. We encounter Jesus in a very up close and personal way, which is absolutely necessary for the New Evangelization. God uses the gift of poetry in Genesis to communicate why human beings are on this earth. Sooner or later everyone seeks the meaning of their lives. Happiness is sought after and often times not found. Where to find true happiness is communicated to us through the creation account in Genesis. The modern exegete must humble herself to see what God wants to communicate through the “story of origins” in Genesis. Once you discover why you are alive, you will never be the same!
