The One With Gender Affirmation
Mama Mish here.
In the lead up to Sydney’s iconic Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, I had the opportunity to speak to Keri Le Page, Inclusion & Diversity Partner at IBM ANZ on how more Australian organisations could adopt policies to better support LGBTQ employees and specifically those employees who are transitioning between genders.
IBM is one of the regions’ leaders in D&I and has a long track record of supporting LGBTQ employees for over 30 years, the latest landmark in this space is its unique partnership announced last year, as Founding Principal Partner of the Victorian Pride Centre (VPC) – Australia’s first pride centre and the largest in South East Asia.
IBM is a founding member of the not for profit, ACON and a proud supporter of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Association.
The company is now amongst the few trendsetters in Australia to welcome such policy changes and strives to encourage other industry leaders as well to join the league.
Keri was a driving force behind the recent launch of IBM’s new Gender Affirmation Treatment policy, which is included as part of the ‘Work-Life’ leave policy. It will be used by several local employees undergoing Gender Affirmation Treatment Leave.
The process of transitioning often takes time and this policy change will ensure staff can continue the process with the confidence that IBM is supporting them through their journey, over a number of years. Employees who are undergoing Gender Affirmation Treatment will have access to two weeks paid time off on top of their regular 4 weeks annual leave per annum.
On top of the new gender affirmation policy, Keri has been a driving force in the implementation of in-depth training for all HR staff and managers as well as a system where employees who are LGBTQ advocates can show their support and willingness to help employees by placing a specific sticker on the back of their work laptop and a ‘rainbow’ overlay on their internal directory profile picture.
In addition to the new policy, Keri spoke on the following IBM D&I policies:
• The roll-out of the employee resource group
• The IBM inclusion council
• Out Role models
• New graduate onboarding process which includes LGBTQ training and scenarios

We know that sometimes it can be hard to know who to talk to if you are experiencing a mental health crisis. If you do not have family and friends living nearby or a strong local support network it can be hard to get through difficult times on your own. Whether you are in a crisis or you just feel down and need to talk to someone, it is important to know that help is available at all hours of the day and night.
There are many free mental health hotlines and mental health online support services across Victoria, which provide crisis support, information, resources, counselling, and therapy to people of all ages.

Trans P.O.V. (Transgender Point of View)
The one about sailing around the world and Australian health care

Sabreena Lachlainn shares her dreams of sailing solo around the world with Michelle.
The amazing Dr Ruth McNair from the Northside Clinic updates Anastasia on how Victorian health care is changing to be more supportive of TGD patients. If you have concerns or complaints about the healthcare or mental health care that you – or someone you know – has received, you can contact the Health Complaints Commissioner or the Mental Health Complaints Commissioner.
We admire Kim Petras and Rain Dove  for modelling different ways to deal with transphobic behaviour.
Rowan shares his experience of airport body scans in the US, which can be problematic for trans people. The National Centre for Transgender Equality has some further information.
Anastasia shares her reflections on the experiences of LGBTIQ+ refugees, in the light of the Medevac repeal and some troubling news from Kenya. We highly recommend you sign up to the Canberra Statement on the access to safety and justice for LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers, refugees and other forcibly displaced persons.
We feature the all-trans indie band 4th Curtis.
And we ask that you consider supporting our JOY Nation campaign.

The one about Peer Navigators in the health care system
Jeremy Wiggins joins us to explain the role of a Peer Navigator.
Anastasia is attending the launch of Kinfolk’s resources to promote dignity and choice for older TGD people. The resources will support family relationships services, aged care services, family members and older TGD people.
In the news:
Laws in India relating to TGD people have changed – for the worse.  Instagram faces challenges with trans-inclusion. Charlie Martin is a transwoman in motorsports. Leigh Dwyer shares her transition story from regional Australia. Hera Jay Brown is the first-ever out transgender woman to receive a Rhodes Scholarship. And there’s positive news about tolerance.

The one about health challenges and gaming
Lucille joins us to talk about her study into the health challenges facing transgender people. We chat about the particular need of people who are female defined at birth (FDAB) to make sure they participate in cervical cancer screening checks, even when it can be challenging to find a doctor who they might be comfortable with.
Our representation in the media matters: The UN has determined that the Australian media’s coverage of trans issues is a breach of our community’s human rights; having a playable trangender character in a mainstream gaming release is a major step forward for visibility, and Boys Don’t Cry remains one of the only movies featuring the trans man experience, 20 years on.
We compare our broodiness levels on learning the news that a trans man conceived a child carried by his wife.
We feature the shoegaze sounds of Lower Dens.

For those in Adelaide, Rachael recommends Kindred Spirits, Carousel Club and Gendasa.
Anastasia shares the exciting news that Sexpo has become more welcoming of the trans and gender diverse community, and women more generally. She had some fun there with glitter!
Don’t forget these events coming up for Trans Day of Remembrance: Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil (Melbourne, Nov 20) and Transgender Day of Remembrance Ceremony & Bridge Viewing (Brisbane, Nov 20).
Sandra Pankurst – the subject of ‘The Trauma Cleaner’ book and a transwoman – is speaking at an Australian True Crime Podcast event on Saturday 23 November.

Seb from Minus18 joins us to discuss the pros and cons of coming out when you are young. We imagine a world where his services – providing training to teachers about LGBTIQ+ inclusiveness – were not needed.
Latrobe University has released a study describing how healthcare is failing transgender people. Lincoln comes in to bring this study to life by sharing his story of his awful experiences dealing with Australian health services as a trans man.
We feature the beautiful and uplifting music of Dillbilly.

The one about the queer community’s relationship with Halloween and horror
It’s a real team effort this week!
Michelle’s here, Anastasia’s back to give us an update on her life, and we’re joined by Karen (our producer) to talk all news Trans.
Miranda interviews Teddy Darling and some other members  of the team who put together SpoooOOoken Word, a queer spoken word performance that was held last Friday in anticipation of Halloween. We hear about Teddy’s passion for spoken word, and reflect on why horror (and sci-fi) can be so attractive to the queer community.
Anastasia talks about her involvement in The Outings Project, a photography exhibition exploring the coming out narratives of LGBTIQ+ people in Melbourne and the significant spaces or events that shaped their coming out experiences.
We remind everyone about Alphabet Soup – a great place of connection for the trans community and their family and friends, especially those over 25. And a ‘mock news‘ story prompts us to reflect that we don’t want to be every woman’s new ‘gay best friend’.
In the news, we see the Greens Party struggling, as well as succeeding, on issues of trans and gender diverse inclusion. We see doctors challenged by pronouns and reflect on personal experiences about how healthcare is failing trans and gender diverse people.
We were looking forward to seeing Gender Euphoria (on until 20 October) and having fun at the Globe awards. (You can see our videos from the night here).
And we reflect on the JOY Nation campaign, and why Joy matters to the trans and gender diverse community. Please support this important campaign!

Mish and Miranda chat with Mayor Steve Stefanopoulos about the City of Stonnington’s Night of Pride fundraiser for the Victorian Pride Centre.
We mourn the news of Mhelody Polan Bruno’s murder.
And we remind everyone about the importance of self care. Such as …
Playing with Mattel’s new range of gender-neutral dolls. Or dressing up as Electra Woman and Dyna Girl for Halloween! Or Thanksgiving celebrations.
We are disappointed with the latest fake news.
And delight in the success of trans women actors M J Rodriguez and Alexandra Billings.

The one where we look for uplifting news stories
We go on the hunt for uplifting stories in the news and media. We find:
Two dads in Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
A young trans man has a great experience with his dad and a haircut.
Chanel casts an openly transgender model as the face of a beauty campaign.
Rebekah Robertson’s book ‘About a Girl’ has been released.
Rebekah’s daughter Georgie Stone had a storyline in Neighbours.
Men everywhere have received a master class on how to talk about their attraction to transgender women.
And it’s Melbourne Fashion Week, welcoming in a season of androgynous looks and shoulder pads. Anastasia recommends bodysuits and bootcuts.

The one where we try to understand political violence and hate crimes
Anastasia chats with Dr Matteo Vergani from Deakin University. Matteo is a specialist in political psychology and political sociology. He is also the author of the book ‘How Is Terrorism Changing Us? : Threat Perception and Political Attitudes in the Age of Terror.’
Matteo’s speciality is understanding political violence and hate crimes, and providing advice on how policies can address it. Matteo is part of CRIS (the Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies), a collaborative think-tank seeking to address the challenges that undermine social cohesion and community resilience. CRIS aims to build strong, safe and well communities.
If you’d like to share with Matteo about the barriers that prevent you from reporting incidents of hate, you can contact him on his email.
If you’d like information about your rights, or would like to report an incident, you can contact The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.
And don’t forget our beloved Gay and Lesbian Liason Officers (GLLO) in the Victorian Police.

The one about finding work and the power of local government
Anastasia is joined this week by Violetta, our former colleague, who is back in the chair while Mish is on leave. We hear an update from Violetta, including about the benefits of finding work and being able to give back.
Mayor Susan Rennie from the Council of Darebin then joins Anastasia to talk about the all ages, family-friendly Trans and Gender Diverse Community Night that Darebin Council is running at the Reservoir Leisure Centre.  And we hear about all the other wonderful things that Darebin Council does to support their local residents. The Darebin Council team would love to hear from you. Anastasia feels inspired to get in touch with her local council to share some of Darebin’s ideas.

The one about surveys and celebrating ageing
It’s a double event this episode!
Anastasia chats with Eloise from The Gender Centre NSW. They explore why we should complete a 20 minute anonymous survey on Health and Social Needs if we’re over 16 and identify as Trans and Gender Diverse (this includes sistergirls and brotherboys). Anastasia and Eloise discuss what barriers might prevent the participation of people of diverse backgrounds. The survey closes on 29 September, so get cracking!
Dr Catherine Barrett (who identifies as human despite Anastasia’s insistence that she is an angel) is also in for a chat. Anastasia and Catherine share about their preparations for Embolden2019. It was held on 1-3 September at the St Kilda Town Hall. You can now see photos from the event on Facebook.
Catherine is passionate about celebrating the elders in the LGBTIQ+ community. She established Celebrate Ageing, a Social Enterprise challenging ageism and building respect for older people. You might like to check out the kinfolk project which aims to improve TGD Elder’s choice and control over gender identity and expression. It’s part of Alice’s Garage.
And we recommend GLOW – a great show about woman celebrating their uniqueness.

The one about ancient cultures

Transgender people have been around a lot longer than many people realise. We look at evidence of transgender people as far back as 3000 years ago. We explore other historical references to transgender people and we reflect on the way colonisation changed some culture’s worldview.
In the news, we celebrate the news of a transgender girl playing volleyball in Hawaii.
And we share Anastasia’s wonder at her changing body. The wonders of hormones!
