Traditional Outdoors Podcast: Preserving our Outdoor Traditions
So long, but not goodbye

There comes a time to know when to quit, this is that episode. I won’t get into all the details here but I did say when Nick and I restarted recording episodes that if I decided it was time to stop I would be sure to let everyone know this time instead of just disappearing. In this episode we announce the winner of Nick’s hardcover edition of Clumsy Predators and then we get into why it is time to wrap things up for the podcast. The content on YouTube may continue sporadically but so far as the podcast goes, it is time to wrap things up. We hope you understand. With that it is time to say so long, but we are not saying goodbye to any of you. Thank you for the time to share our love for the outdoors with you, we appreciate you all.

Records and Recurves

Nick and I spend a bit of time catching up and then jump into a discussion about vinyl records. I know this is a bit out of the ordinary but we had spoken at the end of our last episode about how vinyl records had made such a comeback and the similarities between traditional archery/bowhunting and vinyl records. As you will hear we are a bit passionate about both and Nick and I really had a good time with this episode. We hope you enjoy it as well.

Also, at the beginning and end of the episode we discuss a giveaway for listeners. Nick is giving away a copy of his book Clumsy Predators (https://amzn.to/4cCL0AF) in hardcover. Very generous gesture on Nick’s part! So to enter you will need to Like the post for this episode on the Traditional Outdoors Facebook Page ( https://www.facebook.com/TraditionalOutdoors ), share the post to your personal timeline and then comment on the post that you have completed these tasks and we will add your name into a random drawing and announce the winner on the next episode. Entries will end on August 25th and we will select a random participant and announce the winner on episode 150 in a few weeks. Don’t miss this chance to own a beautiful hardcover copy of Clumsy Predators!!!!

Proud Ancestors

Nick and I spend a bit of time having a discussion about a recent Facebook post that got our attention. The post we are talking about asked the question: “would our great grandfathers would be proud of the pursuit of trophy whitetails by hunters today?”. There was a good bit more unpack with that post and Nick and I just had a conversation much like we would have done had we been sitting around a campfire. Nothing we say here was meant to be an attack on the individual that made the post or to make it personal in any way, we do understand the point the person was trying to make, it was simply the thoughts that we had come to mind that found their way into our conversation and we recorded an episode while sharing those thoughts. We hope you enjoy and would love to hear your own thoughts on this topic.

T.O. Episode 146 – Living Among and Remembering Legends

With recent events in the traditional archery community Nick and I both felt we needed to reflect on time spent with individuals no longer with us and their impact on the sport. This episode is dedicated to the memory of Jerry Brumm, he will be greatly missed.

T.O. Episode 142 – 2023 Revisited
Nick rejoins me for a podcast recording session for the first time in over a year. We spend the time catching up and sharing insights into our 2023 Whitetail seasons. I personally made it out very little with a longbow in ’23 but I did return to hunting with both Blackpowder and firearms in 23 and Nick shares some details about multiple opportunities and some lessons learned.

Traditional Outdoors Podcast: Preserving our Outdoor Traditions
T.O. Episode 138 – Another Buck, Another Obstacle
Episode 138 finds me with mixed emotions. I recently tagged out on bucks in Georgia. However, both bucks I have taken in GA with my longbow were not perfect shots. The second buck was taken on 12/04/22 and the shot was a lot further back than I wanted. I ended up not tracking that buck and waited for 12 hours and then picked up his track with the help of a tracking dog. We found the buck just over 200 yards away but I would have much preferred a quicker, and cleaner kill. It happens to all bowhunters, we don’t like it but it just will happen if you shoot at enough critters. In this episode I share the hunt with you, my approach to recovery and details about what went wrong.

T.O. Episode 137 – Scout or Go Blind
In Episode 137 the topic for discussion is around pre-scouting vs going in blind or “run n gun” for whitetails. Really it is just my thoughts on the advantages for each method and a little of the thought process I use when choosing a location whether I am scouting in the off season for the coming year or if scouting from my computer to choose a location to go in blind. Hopefully you will find something in this episode that is useful for your future hunts.

Traditional Outdoors Podcast: Preserving our Outdoor Traditions
T.O. Episode 136 – An Unlikely Recovery
Episode 136 finds me running solo again. This episode is all about a recent successful bowhunt that came within inches of being a failed attempt. I took a shot at a whitetail buck at about 18 yards, I was focusing so hard on the spot I wanted to hit that I never even noticed the small limb just a few feet from my bow. The arrow struck the limb almost immediately on release and as I watch the arrow I expected a miss but watched while it appeared that my arrow bounced off the bucks shoulder or leg. What I found a half hour later when I went to retrieve my arrow is still a bit hard for me to believe and I was there. Hopefully some lessons to be learned in this episode, I hope you enjoy.

T.O. Episode 135 – Thanksgiving 2022 with Nick Viau
Episode 135 Nick joins the podcast for a Thanksgiving 2022 episode to catch on success for the 2022 Whitetail season. Nick had success in early November at the Michigan Deer camp he nicknamed “Camp Classy” years ago. I also have had success with a nice 8 point buck in North Carolina with a muzzleloader and a public land doe with my longbow “Yankee”. On the day we recorded this episode I had morning success with a nice GA buck but that story is for a future episode. We hope you enjoy this episode and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

T.O. Episode 134 – Winter is coming…..
Episode 134 It won’t be long before the misery of sweating profusely to get to your hunting location turns into the misery of being still for long periods of time without freezing. In this weeks episode I discuss what I have learned works best for me to stay warm when the weather turns cold. I would like to hear from you. What do you find works better for you than what I have discussed in this episode? What items do I use that you have not had good results with?

T.O. Episode 133 – Out of the funk, with a swing and a miss
Episode 133 Well, I am out of the funk with a lot of whitetail sightings (an a couple of bears too) but I whiffed a buck this past week. Hear about my “almost success” experience, what I learned and future plans. This week’s question for our listeners, have you ever found a hunting location that should be productive any time during season and that you couldn’t wait to hunt? Was it productive?

T.O. Episode 132 – In a funk
Episode 132 finds me “in a funk”. Work and personal obligations (along with unusually warm temperatures even for Georgia) have kept me from spending as much time in the woods as I normally would and I find myself needing a way to break out of my funk and keep me going. As a bowhunter I think we have all been there. How do you break the cycle and get fired up about getting back out there?
