Election of 1960
Presidential Election Season is winding down! And while 2024 promises to be one for the history books, we decided to check out some other election years that are already in there. Today, we focus on the Election of 1960, to follow up our Election of 1892 episode.  It's Vice President Nixon vs. Senator John F Kennedy in a razor thin result, far closer than most people realize. And highlights the integrity, at least in 1960, of one Richard M. Nixon, who conceded this exceptionally close race for the good of the country.   Join the Rebeccas as they dive in deep to this election with a whole list of "firsts" and one that has entirely too many similarities to the 2024 election!   Comments or Questions? The Election of 1892
It's Presidential Election Season! And while 2024 promises to be one for the history books, we decided to check out some other election years that are already in there. Today, we focus on the Election of 1892, a pivotal "rematch" election between the incumbent, Benjamin Harrison, and former President Grover Cleveland, who becomes the first, and so far only, President to win re-election after losing an intervening election.    Join the Rebeccas as they dive in deep to this election so long ago that seems to echo many of the issues we still are voting on today: there's a fight over immigration, the economy and tariffs, and a strong populist candidate makes a play to break the two-party system.    Comments or Questions? The Hollywood Hays Code: Making America Moral Again?
From 1934 to 1968, a rigid code of moralist conformity hung over every single movie produced in Hollywood during this time, stemming from a 1915 Supreme Court case that essentially held that the "new" form of media, motion pictures, was not "speech" and therefore was unprotected by the 1st Amendment.  Movie studios scrambled to respond to a pushback against the wildness of the "Roaring '20s" and adopted The Hays Code "voluntarily" to make sure their movies could have the widest possible audience, and therefore make the most amount of money.     Join the Rebeccas as they dive into the interplay of Hollywood and American culture, and how that culture came to be dominated by one particular viewpoint about how society "should" be as determined by the Hays Code, and how the disparity between that and the reality of the counterculture that arose during the '50s and '60s, in addition to foreign competition from films without this code, would ultimately lead to its demise.  ***PLEASE NOTE: Some of the audio for Becca is really poor, which, combined with several family hospital stays this summer, has lead to our longer-than-intended hiatus, and is part of the reason why this episode is so late.  We tried to find time to redo, but just couldn't. However, the content of this pod is so important and relatively unknown, we decided to release "as is". We will be back soon with better audio quality AND ELECTION-THEMED EPISODES to help close out 2024!***   Comments or Questions? Or have an idea for future episodes - #pitchtothepod? Citizen Kane: A Deep Dive
Apologies to all our faithful listeners!  It's that time of year where tour guiding clashes with podcasting, but we are back on track and ready to rock out your summer with the intriguing twists of American history and culture.    Today's (a tiny bit late May) episode takes a deep dive into the quintessential American classic, Citizen Kane, brought to the big screen by the 24 year old wonder boy, Orson Wells.  Join the Rebeccas as the help explain why this is often considered *the best* American film ever made, its connection to William Randolph Hearst, and why it takes a generation or two for the film to be fully appreciated by American audiences.    Comments or Questions? The 1904 World’s Fair!
It’s the end of the year, so it's time for a World's Fair episode! In 1904 the attention of the world turned to St Louis, which held a massive and, of course, controversial World's Fair (because why else would we be talking about it!). In the middle of the Fair they even held the 3rd *ever* Olympic Games, which included a marathon that actually served as one of the most horrific and unethical medical experiments on human beings without their consent or knowledge. John Noyes, ”Free Love”, and the Oneida Community
<<<MATURE CONTENT WARNING>>>   The story of the Oneida Community is a fascinating mix of ahead-of-their-time progressive ideals, and the stark realities of mid-19th century America. John Noyes firmly believed the 2nd Coming of Jesus had already occurred centuries earlier, and it was now the job of mankind to create the perfect society envisioned by many Christians.  The Oneida community was his effort to create this ideal vision. It was a largely successful socialist economic enterprise, but as time went on, as is usually the case, the idealist vision soon became corrupted, especially when it came to the "free love" ideology espoused by Noyes.    Join Rebecca and Becca as they delve the complicated picture of the Oneida Community.    Comments or Questions? The Election of 1876 is probably the wildest election story and also integral to understanding the next 50 years of American history. It's October, which means the Supreme Court is back in session and the Rebeccas are digging into some of the history of the Court this month.  Associate Justice of the Supreme Court William O.
