Today, we focus on the Election of 1960, to follow up our Election of 1892 episode.  It's Vice President Nixon vs. Senator John F Kennedy in a razor thin result, far closer than most people realize. And highlights the integrity, at least in 1960, of one Richard M. From 1934 to 1968, a rigid code of moralist conformity hung over every single movie produced in Hollywood during this time, stemming from a 1915 Supreme Court case that essentially held that the "new" form of media, motion pictures, was not "speech" and therefore was unprotected by the 1st Amendment.  Movie studios scrambled to respond to a pushback against the wildness of the "Roaring '20s" and adopted The Hays Code "voluntarily" to make sure their movies could have the widest possible audience, and therefore make the most amount of money.     Join the Rebeccas as they dive into the interplay of Hollywood and American culture, and how that culture came to be dominated by one particular viewpoint about how society "should" be as determined by the Hays Code, and how the disparity between that and the reality of the counterculture that arose during the '50s and '60s, in addition to foreign competition from films without this code, would ultimately lead to its demise.  ***PLEASE NOTE: Some of the audio for Becca is really poor, which, combined with several family hospital stays this summer, has lead to our longer-than-intended hiatus, and is part of the reason why this episode is so late.  We tried to find time to redo, but just couldn't. Double Indemnity (1944) is, shall we say, "loosely based" on the real life murder of one Albert Snyder by his wife, Ruth, and her lover, Judd Gray. It’s the end of the year, so it's time for a World's Fair episode! In 1904 the attention of the world turned to St Louis, which held a massive and, of course, controversial World's Fair (because why else would we be talking about it!). In the middle of the Fair they even held the 3rd *ever* Olympic Games, which included a marathon that actually served as one of the most horrific and unethical medical experiments on human beings without their consent or knowledge. Perhaps not shockingly, once you hear the story, this was also *almost* the last Olympic marathon ever. John Noyes firmly believed the 2nd Coming of Jesus had already occurred centuries earlier, and it was now the job of mankind to create the perfect society envisioned by many Christians.  The Oneida community was his effort to create this ideal vision. It's October, which means the Supreme Court is back in session and the Rebeccas are digging into some of the history of the Court this month.  Associate Justice of the Supreme Court William O. Douglass is probably one of the most important Supreme Court Justices you probably know nothing about.  Appointed by FDR, he remains the longest serving justice in the history of the court, at just over 36 years.  Listen about his interesting life, his many controversies, and how he almost single-handedly saved the C&O Canal from turning into a parkway!   Comments or Questions?
